Excited-state interactions for [Au(CN)(2)(-)](n) and [Ag(CN)(2)(-)](n) oligomers in solution. Formation of luminescent gold-gold bonded excimers and exciplexes.

Solutions of K[Au(CN)(2)] and K[Ag(CN)(2)] in water and methanol exhibit strong photoluminescence. Aqueous solutions of K[Au(CN)(2)] at ambient temperature exhibit luminescence at concentration levels of > or =10(-2) M, while frozen methanol glasses (77 K) exhibit strong luminescence with concentrations as low as 10(-5) M. The corresponding concentration limits for K[Ag(CN)(2)] solutions are 10(-1) M at ambient temperature and 10(-4) M at 77 K. Systematic variations in concentration, solvent, temperature, and excitation wavelength tune the luminescence energy of both K[Au(CN)(2)] and K[Ag(CN)(2)] solutions by >15 x 10(3) cm(-1) in the UV-visible region. The luminescence bands have been individually assigned to *[Au(CN)(2)(-)](n) and *[Ag(CN)(2)(-)](n) excimers and exciplexes that differ in "n" and geometry. The luminescence of Au(I) compounds is related for the first time to Au-Au bonded excimers and exciplexes similar to those reported earlier for Ag(I) compounds. Fully optimized unrestricted open-shell MP2 calculations for the lowest-energy triplet excited state of staggered [Au(CN)(2)(-)](2) show the formation of a Au-Au sigma single bond (2.66 A) in the triplet excimer, compared to a weaker ground-state aurophilic bond (2.96 A). The corresponding frequency calculations revealed Au-Au Raman-active stretching frequencies at 89.8 and 165.7 cm(-1) associated with the ground state and lowest triplet excited state, respectively. The experimental evidence of the exciplex assignment includes the extremely large Stokes shifts and the structureless feature of the luminescence bands, which suggest very distorted excited states. Extended Hückel (EH) calculations for [M(CN)(2)(-)](n) and *[M(CN)(2)(-)](n) models (M = Au, Ag; n = 2, 3) indicate the formation of M-M bonds in the first excited electronic states. From the average EH values for staggered dimers and trimers, the excited-state Au-Au and Ag-Ag bond energies are predicted to be 104 and 112 kJ/mol, respectively. The corresponding bond energies in the ground state are 32 and 25 kJ/mol, respectively.

Cinchonidine adsorption on gold and gold-containing bimetallic platinum metal surfaces: an attenuated total reflection infrared and density functional theory study.

Adsorption of cinchonidine on monometallic Au and bimetallic Pt-Au and Pd-Au thin model films prepared by physical vapor deposition has been investigated with attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy. On Au the alkaloid forms an adsorbed layer that shows higher stability against desorption than the corresponding adsorption on Pt. In this adsorption layer the intermolecular interactions dominate over metal-adsorbate interactions as indicated by the absence of the spectroscopic features attributed to strongly flat adsorbed species. This behavior is further supported by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations indicating that flat and tilted orientations of the quinoline ring have comparable adsorption energy on Au but lower (7-10 kcal/mol) compared to adsorption on Pt (ca. 40 kcal/mol). As a consequence, the creation of a metal surface with isolated chiral sites is prevented by formation of an adsorbed structure formed by intermolecularly bound cinchonidine molecules on Au. While the binding to Pt is due to the formation of sigma-bonds to surface atoms, such aggregates are bound to Au mainly by van der Waals forces. Given this different nature of bonding of cinchonidine to Au and Pt, addition of Au to Pt and Pd films could be used to probe the changes of fractional coverage of the different adsorbed species of cinchonidine on the platinum metals. It is demonstrated that the lowering of the domain size of the platinum group metal by Au can simulate the effect of particle size on the distribution of the surface conformations of the alkaloid on a metal surface.

Gold-catalyzed cycloisomerization of o-alkynylbenzaldehydes with a pendant unsaturated bond: [3 + 2] cycloaddition of gold-bound 1,3-dipolar species with dipolarophiles.

[reaction: see text] A new and novel Au-catalyzed cycloisomerization of ynals bearing a pendant unsaturated bond leading to synthetically valuable [6.7.n]-tricyclic compounds were developed. This study strongly supports the intermediacy of [3 + 2] cycloaddition proposed by DFT calculation and provides an easy access to key skeletons found in a variety of natural products.

Size effects of gold nanaoparticles on plasmon-induced photocurrents of gold-TiO2 nanocomposites.

An ITO electrode was coated with a nanoporous TiO2 film, and the film was loaded with Au nanoparticles with different diameters (15, 40 and 100 nm). The electrode exhibited plasmon-induced photocurrents in the presence of Fe(2+/3+) couple under visible light (lambda > 420 nm). The quantum efficiency increased with increasing particle size, whereas the maximum photocurrent density decreased.

XAFS studies of gold and silver-gold nanoparticles in aqueous solutions.

The x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) of colloidal Au and Au/Ag nanoparticles (3.5nm and 20nm mean diameter) in an aqueous solution has been investigated. Size dependent alloying was observed upon deposition of Ag on Au core. Ag forms distinct layers around the 20 nm Au nanoparticles. In contrast, random mixing is found for Ag deposited on 3.5nm Au particles.
