Moving out: an opportunity for friendship and broadening social horizons?

The study investigated the changes in social activities and social networks of people with mild learning difficulties who moved from family home and from a long-stay hospital to live more independently in the community. Twenty-five people with a learning difficulty, 12 mothers and 33 members of staff participated in this study based on interviews before and after the move to the community. It was found that people with a learning difficulty participated in more community-based activities after the move but they had very few opportunities to meet non-handicapped people. Their segregation remained a main source of dissatisfaction with their social life.

Conflict and the friendship relations of young children.

The purpose of this investigation was to compare conflicts occurring between young children and their friends to those occurring between nonfriends. 53 children with a median age of 4 years, 3 months were observed and interviewed to determine who were mutual friends, unilateral associates, or neutral associates. 146 conflicts were also observed. Conflicts between mutual friends, as compared to those occurring between neutral associates: (a) did not occur less frequently, differ in length, or differ in the situations that instigated them, but (b) were less intense, were resolved more frequently with disengagement, and more frequently resulted in equal or partially equal outcomes. Continued socialization was also more likely following conflicts between friends. Conflicts between unilateral associates resembled those between nonfriends, although postconflict interaction resembled that between mutual friends. Conflict resolution strategies favored by friends maximize the likelihood that their interaction and their relationships will continue.

Friendship Manor: a community geriatrics model.

Models for the delivery of medical services are attracting much attention lately. It appears that geriatrics will become more important in the future. These facts have led to a narrative about the development of a system of medical care for a retirement community in Roanoke, Virginia.

Feminist friendship: Isabel Hampton Robb, Lavinia Lloyd Dock and Mary Adelaide Nutting.

Three nurses who met at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing were the architects of professional nursing education and the founders of the major professional organizations in nursing: Isabel Hampton Robb, Lavinia Lloyd Dock and Mary Adelaide Nutting. Their relationship was an important part of the context in which feminism, social reform and nursing came together at the turn of the century. This paper explores the social context that structured their professional interests as well as their personal relationships.

Hypothesis driven research and molecular mechanisms in functional dyspepsia: the beginning of a beautiful friendship in research and practice?

There is accumulating evidence of a genetic predisposition in at least a subset of patients with functional GI symptoms. Hence, hunting for genes in irritable bowel syndrome and functional dyspepsia has become fashionable of late. Unfortunately, as in other fields, replication of gene association studies has most often been problematic. In this issue of the Journal, independent corroboration of an association of dyspepsia with GNbeta3 is reported. Other carefully selected putative genes including polymorphisms in the alpha2A adrenoreceptor, the serotonin reuptake transporter, and the 5-HT1A receptor were not associated. The study raises three key questions all considered in this editorial: (a) if GNbeta3 is truly associated with functional and uninvestigated dyspepsia, why might this be the case, (b) what molecular mechanisms may be of most relevance, and (c) perhaps most importantly, does or will this finding translate into clinical practice in terms of diagnosis or treatment? New knowledge of gene associations like GNbeta3 and their pathophysiological relevance may ultimately lead to better targeted therapy as well as new disease modifying treatments.

Social disaffection, friendship patterns and adolescent cigarette use: the Muscatine Study.

This study was undertaken to determine if adolescent social disaffection with school and family not only would be a significant predictor of cigarette use but would explain a significant amount of the association with friends who smoke. Eleven hundred and eighty ninth-12th grade students in Muscatine, Iowa, were surveyed in Spring 1984. Multiple regression analyses indicated several social disaffection variables were significant predictors of association with friends who smoke, explaining 20% of the variance. The combination of association with friends who smoke and social disaffection variables explained 48% of the variance in adolescent cigarette smoking. Variables related to adolescents' participation in school and related activities suggest prevention programs should recognize the impact of social disaffection on adolescents cigarette use.
