Chromic acid poisoning treated with acute hemodialysis.

Poisoning with chromium compounds is rare, but often serious. The symptoms are quite characteristic, the most dramatic of these being circulatory collapse, hepatic and renal failure. A case is reported where an 18-year-old woman ingested 5 g of chromic acid. She was treated with acute hemodialysis and forced diuresis, and survived with surprisingly few symptoms of poisoning.

Regulatory and legal aspects of supplementing grazing ruminants.

The current legal and regulatory status of classes of feed additives is discussed, including food additives permitted in animal feed and drinking water, generally recognized as safe (GRAS) ingredients, and approved animal drugs. A brief description of these feed additive classes is given. Some nutritional and practical considerations are given for feed additives, and some special considerations are provided for free-choice feeding, medicated liquid feeds, sodium molybdate, and chromium compounds.

[Causes of occupational allergy in dental nurses. An analysis based on the material collected at The Institute of Occupational Medicine in Lódź].

The causes of occupational dermatosis were analysed in 27 dental nurses examined at The Nofer Institute of Occupational Medicine during the years 1995-99. Contact sensitisation (at least one positive epidermal test) was found in 18 subjects (66.7%). Occupational allergic dermatitis was induced most frequently by: glutaraldehyde (7 positive patch tests), nickel (7), benzalkonium (4), formaldehyde (4), fragrances (4), chromium compounds (3), glyoxal (3), and thiuram (3). In the authors' opinion, dental nurses are nowadays sensitised to other chemical compounds than it used to be in the past. The present components of disinfectants (aldehydes, quaternary ammonium bases), metals and rubber are the major etiologic agents that induce occupational allergy.

Use of radioactive chromic phosphate in pleural effusions.

Radioactive chromic phosphate was chosen in place of radioactive gold for control of pleural effusions and ascites. The chromic phosphate has no gamma radiation to complicate the health physics. Its 14.3 day half-life in contrast to that of 2.69 days for gold makes possible the use of much smaller total dosages. There were no untoward results from the use of this material. The results in the series here reported upon compare favorably with those reported for gold(198).
