[On-line, high-speeded data analysis of cardiovascular function using hybrid systems (author's transl)].

In recent years application of computer techniques to various problems in biology has increased. In the field of anesthesia, where rapid changes appearing in a short time must be followed, the conventional, mannual methods are not applicable. So we have developed on-line computer analytical methods of cardiovascular function. Hybrid systems are the preferred methods in many biological problems, either because of efficiency and lower cost, or because of real time, on-line, closed-loop capabilities for direct use during experiments. As a computer output we used a graphic display computer and cathod ray tube devices. We applied these systems to analize and calculate cardiac work with other circulatory parameters. We got a ventricular function curve in visible form on CRT within 30 seconds after introducing the signals of left ventricular work and ventricular end-diastolic pressure into the analog computer. It was also useful to calculate vascular input impedence and myocardial maximal velocity of shortening. Finally causes of input errors in these analytical methods were discussed.

[High-speed recording of fluorescein fundus angiography using an argon laser as the illumination source].

We constructed a new fluorescein fundus angiography system using a speedy and sensitive fundus camera and an argon laser apparatus as the illumination source. The system consists of a fluorescein fundus camera, a high-speed camera, a digital recorder, an argon laser apparatus, and a cathode ray tube(CRT)monitor. The frame speed was 200 frames/s. It was possible to record high speed fluorescein angiography with lower illumination by using an argon laser as the illumination source. This system allowed us to measure the rate of blood flow in the retinal vessels because it easily detected the dye front in the retinal vessels.

The optical quality of the human eye revisited.

A subjective assessment of the optical quality of the human eye may be derived from a comparison between the contrast sensitivities obtained in response to a refracted grating display and a non-refracted grating display. The former may be generated on a cathode ray tube (CRT) while the latter may be obtained with laser interference fringes observed in the Maxwellian view. With this method, the rate of decline of the contrast ratio of the optical media with increasing spatial frequency has been shown to be appreciably less than the rate of decline of the neural performance represented by the laser contrast sensitivities. However, this comparison has been based on results in response to a green CRT display and red (Helium-Neon) interference fringes. In the present study, we have confirmed this result with respect to comparisons between a green CRT display and a green laser display, although the absolute value of the contrast ratio of the optical media for the green laser display was reduced compared with values for the red laser display.

Disk-cathode flash X-ray tube driven by a repetitive two-stage Marx pulser.

Fundamental studies of a repetitive flash X-ray generator using a disk-cathode radiation tube are described. The high-voltage pulser employed a modified two-stage surge-Marx circuit. The two condensers in the pulser were charged from 40 to 60 kV, and the electric charges were discharged to the X-ray tube repetitively to generate flash X-rays. The total capacity during the main discharge was 425 pF, and the maximum output voltage from the pulser was about 1.9 times the charged voltage. The flash X-ray tube was of the demountable-diode type and was composed of a rod-shaped anode tip made of tungsten, a disk cathode made of graphite and a tube body made of polymethylmethacrylate. The peak tube voltage was primarily determined by the anode-cathode (A-C) space, and the peak tube current was less than 0.5 kA. Thus the maximum photon energy could be easily controlled by varying the A-C space, and the tube current roughly increased according to increases in the charged voltage. The pulse width ranged from 40 to 100 ns, and the X-ray intensity was less than 1.1 microC kg-1 at 0.5 m per pulse. The repetition rate was less than 50 Hz, and the effective focal spot size was equivalent to the anode diameter.

Analysis of photo-pattern sensitivity in patients with Pokemon-related symptoms.

This study was designed to analyze photo-pattern sensitivity in patients who developed acute neurologic symptoms associated with watching an animated television program, "Pokemon." The 18 patients (13 females and five males) underwent electroencephalograms and photo-pattern stimulation testing, including special stimulation test batteries (strobe-pattern test and cathode ray tube-pattern test). Photo-pattern sensitivity was confirmed in 16 patients with and without seizure episodes. The strobe-pattern test including a white flickering light test (with eyes open, closed, and open or closed), and the cathode ray tube-pattern test each induced a photo-paroxysmal response in more than 80% of patients. However, with the eyes closed only, as is common in Japan, the photo-paroxysmal response induction rate with a white flickering light stimulus was significantly lower (43%). In the cathode ray tube-pattern test, higher spatial frequencies produced higher rates of photo-paroxysmal response induction. It was demonstrated that underlying photo-pattern sensitivity is more accurately investigated by our method than by standard intermittent photic stimulation alone. By characterizing underlying photo-pattern sensitivity and identifying predisposing factors more precisely, we can develop better guidelines for prevention of a second "Pokemon" incident. According to the results of the present cathode ray tube-pattern test, pattern sensitivity (especially spatial resolution) appears to also be involved in Pokemon-related symptoms, in addition to chromatic sensitivity.
