[Studies on basis and methods for examination of ruled characters].

Although the writer of ruled characters temporarily changes his movement habits forcefully, the static impression of characters in mind still determines the characteristics of structures and wrongly written. The static impression controls ruled writing. This builds up the basis for the examination of ruled characters. The main methods for examination is to find in characters special structures, stroke collocation, and wrongly written.

Dynamic MR imaging of soft tissue tumors with assessment of the rate and character of lesion enhancement.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to analyze the diagnostic usefulness of dynamic MRI with determination of the coefficient of enhancement rate and the character of tumor enhancement, and to assess both parameters in the differentiation of malignant lesions. MATERIAL/METHODS: The material consisted of 45 patients (30 sarcomas, 15 non-malignant lesions), age 16-64 years. MRI was done using an Elscint 2T unit, gradient echo techniques, apex angle 80 degrees. The repetition time (TR) was 80-200 ms, the echo time (TE) was 2-6 ms, 1 excitation; the acquisition time (TA) was 70-80 ms. The coefficient of tissue enhancement rate was calculated in the region of interest, and expressed as percent per second (erc%/s). The limit value of erc%/s was determined. The sensitivity and specificity of MRI were calculated in the differentiation of malignant tumors. The method of contrast filling of the tumors was assessed in successive phases after administration of gadolinium Gd-DTPA. RESULTS: Dynamic MRI with determination of the index of tumor enhancement rate is highly sensitive (93%) and specific (73%) in the differentiation of malignant and benign lesions. The usefulness of the assessment of tumor enhancement character was not confirmed, since the sensitivity and specificity were 73% and 33%. Dynamic MRI with determination of erc%/s and tumor enhancement character is highly sensitive (93%) and specific (87%). CONCLUSIONS: Dynamic MRI with determination of erc%/s and tumor enhancement character is the best method for differential diagnosis.

[Studies on character variation of parent of "Ganzaoxian 47" by space mutation].

OBJECTIVE: To breed a new variety from "86-70 selective line"--a late-maturing early indica rice variety with small spike, light grain and weak disease resistance by space mutation. METHOD: Dry seeds of "86-70 selective line" were carried by recoverable satellite, to a near earth orbit and sowed and planted on the earth after recovery, heritance and variation of the characters of SP1- SP9 generation were observed. RESULT: Because of comprehensive space mutation, the characters of their progenies were segregated and varied in many aspects and directions, and the segregated and varied characters were found to be heritable; by selecting early-maturing mutants from these progenies and cultivating them directionally, a new rice variety "Ganzaoxian 47 " was bred. In comparison with its parent, "Ganzaoxian 47" had superior agronomic and economic characters, significantly strong resistance to rice blast and so on, its filled grains per spike [correction of spile], kilo-grain weight and yield were increased by 37.9%, 5.3% and 22.5% respectively, but its growth and developmental duration were shortened by 14 d. CONCLUSION: This study provided a new demonstration for space mutation breeding by recoverable satellite, and indicated that space mutation was an effective and new approach to agricultural crops breeding.

Analysis of character correlations among wood decay mechanisms, mating systems, and substrate ranges in homobasidiomycetes.

Homobasidiomycetes include the majority of wood-decaying fungi. Two basic forms of wood decay are known in homobasidiomycetes: white rot, in which lignin and cellulose are degraded, and brown rot, in which lignin is not appreciably degraded. An apparent correlation has been noted between production of a brown rot, decay of conifer substrates, and possession of a bipolar mating system (which has a single mating-type locus, in contrast to tetrapolar systems, which have two mating-type loci). The goals of this study were to infer the historical pattern of transformations in decay mode, mating type, and substrate range characters, and to determine if a causal relationship exists among them. Using nuclear and mitochondrial rDNA sequences, we performed a phylogenetic analysis of 130 species of homobasidiomycetes and performed ancestral state reconstructions by using parsimony on a range of trees, with various loss:gain cost ratios. We evaluated pairwise character correlations by using the concentrated changes test (CCT) of Maddison and the maximum likelihood (ML) method of Pagel. White rot, tetrapolar mating systems, and the ability to decay conifers and hardwoods appear to be plesiomorphic in homobasidiomycetes, whereas brown rot, bipolar mating systems, and exclusive decay of conifers appear to have evolved repeatedly. The only significant correlation among characters was that between brown rot (as the independent character) and exclusive decay of conifer substrates (P < 0.03). This correlation was supported by the CCT on a range of plausible trees, although not with every reconstruction of ancestral states, and by the ML test. Our findings suggest that the evolution of brown rot has promoted repeated shifts to specialization for confier substrates.

More taxa or more characters revisited: combining data from nuclear protein-encoding genes for phylogenetic analyses of Noctuoidea (Insecta: Lepidoptera).

A central question concerning data collection strategy for molecular phylogenies has been, is it better to increase the number of characters or the number of taxa sampled to improve the robustness of a phylogeny estimate? A recent simulation study concluded that increasing the number of taxa sampled is preferable to increasing the number of nucleotide characters, if taxa are chosen specifically to break up long branches. We explore this hypothesis by using empirical data from noctuoid moths, one of the largest superfamilies of insects. Separate studies of two nuclear genes, elongation factor-1 alpha (EF-1 alpha) and dopa decarboxylase (DDC), have yielded similar gene trees and high concordance with morphological groupings for 49 exemplar species. However, support levels were quite low for nodes deeper than the subfamily level. We tested the effects on phylogenetic signal of (1) increasing the taxon sampling by nearly 60%, to 77 species, and (2) combining data from the two genes in a single analysis. Surprisingly, the increased taxon sampling, although designed to break up long branches, generated greater disagreement between the two gene data sets and decreased support levels for deeper nodes. We appear to have inadvertently introduced new long branches, and breaking these up may require a yet larger taxon sample. Sampling additional characters (combining data) greatly increased the phylogenetic signal. To contrast the potential effect of combining data from independent genes with collection of the same total number of characters from a single gene, we simulated the latter by bootstrap augmentation of the single-gene data sets. Support levels for combined data were at least as high as those for the bootstrap-augmented data set for DDC and were much higher than those for the augmented EF-1 alpha data set. This supports the view that in obtaining additional sequence data to solve a refractory systematic problem, it is prudent to take them from an independent gene.

[Nutrition and taxonomy of "enterobacteriaceae" and related bacteria. III. Nutritional characters and differentiation of the taxonomic groups (author's transl)].

A batch of 186 strains belonging to the families Enterobacteriaceae or Vibrionaceae has been studied by determination, for each strain, of the "versatility" towards 146 organic substrates tested as sole source of carbon and energy. This study allowed to work out a classification of these strains into the 32 classes which have been previously described. In the present paper the nutritional characters of these classes are reported. On the basis of these characters, the 32 classes may be regrouped into 7 groups, namely: (1.1) "Escherichia-Salmonella-Citrobacter", (1.2) "dystrophic Klebsielleae", (1.3) "eutrophic Klebsielleae", (2.1) "Shigella", (2.2) "Proteus", (2.3) "Aeromonas-Vibrio", (2.4) "Edwardsiella tarda-Aeromonas salmonicida-Plesiomonas shigelloides". Only 4 strains (about 2 percent) happened misclassified in this study where the taxa were assembled exclusively by means of nutritional characters. The number and the type of the substrates which can be used in each group are reported, as well as the nutritional characters which are possibly useful to differential diagnosis. The taxonomic considerations which may be deduced from this study are discussed.

[Analysis of dominant-recessive mutated character of nfr genes of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and its mutual interaction with the chloroplastic psbA gene].

Phenotypic analysis of the nfr/Nfr diplontic hybrids has demonstrated the recessive mutated character of the nfr genes, and the norflurazon resistant character of the Nfr-4 And Nfr-5 mutants were resulted in by the different nuclear genes nfr-1 and nfr-2 respectively. From the tetrad analysis result of hybridizations of psbA mutant with wild strains CC-124 and nfr mutant, it have been demonstrated that the sensitivity of psbA mutated strain to norflurazon under photoautotrophic condition is due to its multiple effect whereas the chloroplast genome under the mixotrophic situation also gives some effect for resistance to norflurazon. From the titration results of cross-resistant character for antibiotics of norflurazon resistant strains, we had found that, the Nfr-3 mutant has some cross-resistance to erythromycin and streptomycin; based on this phenomenon it would be expected that this mutant having resistant character to suppressor of phytoene desaturase also give some effect for construction of chloroplastic protein.

[Construction of double-strand break repair protein hKu70 deficient cell strain and its biologic characters].

OBJECTIVE: To construct DNA double-strand break (DSB) repair protein hKu70 deficient cell strain and to observe its biological characters for studying the functions of hKu70 gene and the effects of occupational harmfulness factors on DSB repair. METHODS: Human lung fibroblasts (HLF) were transfected with the eukaryotic expression plasmids of hKu70 gene antisense RNA (pEGFP-C1-K) to construct hKu70 protein deficient cells (named as "HLFK"). The protein expression levels of hKu70 gene in HLFC and HLFK were detected by the Western blotting to estimate the effects of antisense inhibition. Morphology, growth character and growth status in soft agar of transfected HLFK were observed. RESULTS: pEGFP-C1-K vector was successfully expressed in HLF. The protein expression level of hKu70 gene in HLFK was decreased by 42% as compared with that in HLFC. No obvious changes of the biologic characters were observed in HLFK. CONCLUSION: The hKu70 protein deficient cell strain was successfully constructed. The hKu70 protein deficiency alone didn't induce obvious changes of the biological characters in HLFK.

[Variability of the hard dorsal idiosomal tegument pattern and other phenotypic characters as a manifestation of microevolution in Dermacentor marginatus (Acari: Ixodidae)].

The pattern of male conscutum and female scutum in Dermacentor marginatus has been examined in 6 points of the East-European and Asian parts of its range (Fig. 1). A high rate of modification variability of the pattern has been recovered in each geographical sample. It is shown that populations differ reliably from each other by the length of the dark patches on the marginal flank of the conscutum (nkappabeta, npkappabeta, 3kappabeta); some samples also differ by the number of these patches, complexes of other patches of the scutum and conscutum, and as well (visually) by the color density of light fields and contrast between them and the dark background on the conscutum and scutum (Table 1, 2). Besides, the samples differ reliably at each stage by the complexes of morphometric characters (Table 3, 4). The sample from the Peter the First Ridge is most deviate from others by the color contrast and complex of patches both in males and females. However, by the patches of marginal flank and morphometric characters of both sexes and perimaginal stages this sample differ less from others. The sample from the Stavropol plateau having most variable pattern (Fig. 3, 1-9, 4, 1-3) is characterized by the greater number of statistically reliable differences by the patches (nkappabeta, npkappabeta, 3kappabeta) and morphometric characters of all stages of the ontogenesis from all other samples. Other geographical samples have intermedial position in regard to degree of differences from each other. The samples examined are considered as morphotypes; degree of differences between morphotypes is unequal. The phenotypic differences have mosaic dispersion among ontogenetic stages and do not show a coherent direction in comparing the morphotypes. Differential characters of the morphotypes and related tick species belong to different structures or their different parameters. Possible ways of morphotype's origin and geochronological characteristics of morphotypes are discussed.

Evolution of specialization and ecological character displacement of herbivores along a gradient of plant quality.

We study the combined evolutionary dynamics of herbivore specialization and ecological character displacement, taking into account foraging behavior of the herbivores, and a quality gradient of plant types. Herbivores can adapt by changing two adaptive traits: their level of specialization in feeding efficiency and their point of maximum feeding efficiency along the plant gradient. The number of herbivore phenotypes, their levels of specialization, and the amount of character displacement among them are the result of the evolutionary dynamics, which is driven by the underlying population dynamics, which in turn is driven by the underlying foraging behavior. Our analysis demonstrates broad conditions for the diversification of a herbivore population into many specialized phenotypes, for basically any foraging behavior focusing use on highest gains while also including errors. Our model predicts two characteristic phases in the adaptation of herbivore phenotypes: a fast character-displacement phase and a slow coevolutionary niche-shift phase. This two-phase pattern is expected to be of wide relevance in various consumer-resource systems. Bringing together ecological character displacement and the evolution of specialization in a single model, our study suggests that the foraging behavior of herbivorous arthropods is a key factor promoting specialist radiation.

[Heredity analysis of main characters of nitrogen use efficiency in maize.].

With P1, P2, F1, F2, B1 and B2 generations of two combinations of maize with high nitrogen use efficiency, hereditary capacity and genetic progress of seventeen characters were studied. The random block design was used in the experiment. The results showed that the heritability of each traits was different at different N levels. Broad heritability was between 0.78 and 0.46, and narrow heritability between 0.68 and 0.23 at low N level treatment. Broad heritability was between 0.76 and 0.49, narrow heritability between 0.67 and 0.25 at high N level treatment. The heritability of the chlorophyll content of ear leaf at heading stage period, NUE, ear weight and area of ear leaf were higher than other major characters at low N, the hereditary capacity of the biomass at heading stage period, ear weight, chlorophyll content of ear leaf at heading stage period and biomass at maturity were higher than other major characters at high N. These characters could be selected at early generation at low and high N, respectively.

[Researching the character and stenosis of coronary calcified plaques by using 16-slice spiral CT].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the characters of coronary calcified plaques by using 16-slice spiral CT and determine their stenosis degree according to the results of catheter coronary angiography. METHODS: Twenty patients who had received 16-slice spiral CT coronary angiography and conventional coronary angiography (CAG) were found to be with calcified plaques. The characters of these plaques, including the diameter of calcified plaques and lumen diameter of the exact artery segment, were retrospectively analyzed. The stenosis degree of the corresponding segment was judged in accordance with the results of CAG. RESULTS: Totally 84 calcified plaques were observed in 16-slice spiral CT images in these 20 patients. Among them there were 16 small nodules (diameter: < 0.15 cm), 56 purely calcified plaques (diameter: > or = 0. 15 cm), and 12 complex plaques with calcify component. There was no obvious stenosis in artery segments with little calcified nodules. The stenosis degree of most segments with purely calcified plaques (75%) was less than 50%. The stenosis degree had no significant correlation with the size of plaques (P > 0.05). However, the stenosis degree of complex plaques had much closer relationship with the characters of mixed plaques. CONCLUSIONS: Most coronary segments with calcified plaques have slight stenosis. Their stenosis degree is not related with the size of plaques. The stenosis degree of complex plaques has a closer relationship with the characters of mixed plaques.

[Canonical correlations of light and temperature with yield and quality characters of F1 ecological populations of hybrid rice].

In this paper, field experiment was conducted to analysis the canonical correlations of light and temperature with the yield and quality characters of F1 ecological populations of 54 hybrid rice breeds. The results showed that the yield and quality characters of the populations were significantly correlated with the accumulated temperature, effective accumulated temperature, extreme temperature difference, and sunshine length through the growth period of hybrid rice. The first canonical correlation coefficient (lambda1) between the light and temperature during vegetative growth stage and the yield characters was 0.9975, with the canonical information accounted for 99.96% of the total canonical information, leading to 99.50% of yield variation. Light and temperature affected the yield of hybrid rice mainly through their effects on the total and effective numbers of grains' spikelet and its fertility. In this aspect, accumulated and effective accumulated temperature played a determinative role during vegetative growth stage, while extreme temperature difference and sunshine length were the key factors during reproductive growth stage. As for the quality characters of hybrid rice, light and temperature mainly affected the percentage of polished to head rice, and in this aspect, accumulated and effective accumulated temperature played a determinative role before filling stage, while extreme temperature difference and sunshine length were the key factors after this

Mucoid and pigmentation characters can be suppressed by non-anti-Pseudomonas aeruginosa antibiotics in cystic fibrosis: a report of promising preliminary results.

In an effort to develop new strategies, the authors are exploring the hypothesis that non-anti-Pseudomonas aeruginosa antibiotics can affect some major virulence factors in cystic fibrosis P. aeruginosa. Recent samples (127) of P. aeruginosa isolated from the sputum of cystic fibrosis patients and manifesting a mucoid growth were stored at -70 degrees C until experimentation. The mucoid character was retested after thawing and one 24-h in-vitro passage at 37 degrees C onto 100-mm blood agar plates to prepare a bacterial suspension for inoculation (Steers or MIC-2000 plus replicator) and cultivation (48 h, 37 degrees C) onto different 100-mm or 150-mm Mueller-Hinton agar plates containing either no antibiotics or antibiotics alone, and antibiotic combinations without presumed anti-P. aeruginosa activity. Some isolates (49, 38.6%) of P. aeruginosa expressed again the mucoid character on antibiotic-free Mueller-Hinton agar and growth was prevented by antibiotics in a number of them: 7 with doxycycline (16.0 micrograms/ml), 2 with rifampicin (16.0 micrograms/ml), 6 with roxithromycin-sulfamethoxazole (16.0-304.0 micrograms/ml) and 23 with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. In the remaining evaluable isolates, the mucoid was modified towards the rough character in 36 out of 42 with doxycyline, 36 out of 47 with rifampicin, 31 out of 43 with roxithromycin-sulfamethoxazole and 20 out of 26 with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. In parallel, the pigmentation was lost in the presence of antibiotics in those P. aeruginosa isolates having manifested this character on Mueller-Hinton agar. These results suggest that non-anti-P. aeruginosa antibiotics can modify the in vitro markers of virulence in cystic fibrosis P. aeruginosa and that they merit further investigation.

The phenotypic interdependence of the musculoskeletal characters of the mandibular arch in mice.

Evidence from studies of craniofacial anomalies and the evolutionary transition from reptiles to mammals suggests that the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), bony zygomatic arch, middle ear ossicles and mandibular muscle pattern may form a correlated suite of characters. To test the degree of phenotypic interdependence among these features, mandibular arch defects were analysed in prenatal mice. Retinoic palmitate was administered to pregnant mice on day 8.7 to produce test foetuses with malformations of the mandibular arch. A rating scale was developed for each of the four characters so that numerical values could be assigned to each phenotype encountered. Control animals were used to establish normal phenotypes for each character which were assigned a value of 1. Data from each test age, 16, 18 and 19 days postconception, were pooled and Spearmann rank correlation coefficients between each of the traits were calculated. Coefficients (R) range from a high of 0.87, between the TMJ and zygomatic arch, to a low of 0.67 between the zygomatic arch and the mandibular musculature showing highly significant correlations (P less than 0.0001) among all characters. Therefore, the data suggest that the musculoskeletal features of the mandibular arch are phenotypically interdependent during development.

Nonlinear dependence of biological activity on hydrophobic character: the bilinear model.

In homologous series of compounds biological activity is linearly dependent on hydrophobic character until a cut-off point is reached where this linear relationship changes to a nonlinear relationship: biological activity increases with increase of hydrophobic character, reaches a maximum and then decreases with further increase of hydrophobic character. Drug transport in biological systems is determined by the rate constants of transfer of the drug through aqueous and organic compartments. In simple in vitro systems the rate constant k1 of transport of a drug from an aqueous phase into an organic phase and the rate constant k2 of the reverse process can be described as functions of the partition coefficient P: log k1 = log P - log (beta P + 1) + c and log k2 = - log (beta P + 1) + c. Observed and calculated k1 and k2 values are used to simulate drug transport in different multicompartment systems. Based on the McFarland probability model a new model for the quantitative description of the dependence of biological activity on hydrophobic character, called bilinear model, log 1/C = a log P - b log (beta P + 1) + C, has been derived recently: unsymmetrical curves with linear ascending and descending sides and a parabolic part within the range of optimal lipophilicity result from this model. The bilinear model is applied to experimental data of drug absorption, drug distribution and drug activity in biological systems. A comparison of the parabolic model and the bilinear model shows that in nearly all cases a better fit of the data results from the bilinear model.

[Stability of determination and differentiation of the somatic sexual characters in Nereis pelagica L. (Annelida polychaeta)].

Experiments of regeneration in situ or on grafts were carried out to test the stability of determination of the somatic sexual characters in Nereis pelagica. The sexual characters of the parapodial cirri (male and female swellings, male crenellations) are always expressed on stump or regenerate according to the genetic sex. Supernumary parapodia which developed at the site of junction of the heterologous faces of host and graft of opposite sexes, might have the characters of either sex; this result can be interpreted by supposing that a supernumary parapodium is derived from tissues of either host or graft, of the corresponding sex. Conversely, the pygidial papillae, which normally occur only on the heteronereid male, will appear on regenerating female pygidia, triggered to transform to the heteronereid condition naturally or by decerebration, with a frequency depending on the age of the regenerate, the length of the regenerate, and the genital condition of both the stump and the regenerate. It is concluded that the presence of the papillae is not a sex-specific character, but that their development is normally inhibited in the maturing female.

On the connection between physical defects and the character type of the "exception".

A clinical and theoretical study is presented of the effects of physical defects on character structure, especially on its narcissistic aspects. The basic thesis of this paper is that there are two differentiable responses to awareness of a physical disability: various forms of denial, and a clinging to narcissistic overgratifications as a compensation for negative feelings about the self. The first response, of overusing denial, is universal, and of course leaves its mark on a person's character. However, only the second sort of response, of clinging to overgratifications, leads to the character type of the "exception" (Freud 1916). The distinction between moral ideals, embodied in the ego ideal narrowly defined, and nonmoral ideals, embodied especially in the wishful self-image, is presented as a useful tool in understanding various psychological effects of physical disabilities.
