Preliminary experience with the use of a programmable pacemaker.

One hundred sixty-four patients, in whom new externally programmable pacemakers had been inserted, were studied over a two year period, beginning July, 1972. Following implantation, the rate and current output of this pacemaker could be changed at any time by a non-invasive technique involving electromagnetic pulse trains emitted by an external "programmer". In 89 percent of the patients it was possible to reduce battery output by half, implying greater longevity of the pacer in these cases. In 15 percent of the patients, manipulative control of the pacemaker rate was employed and found beneficial.

Myopotential inhibition of unipolar lithium pacemakers.

The effect of isometric upper extremity exercise on pacemaker function was evaluated in 27 patients who remained pacemaker-dependent during testing. Inhibition was demonstrated in eight (31 percent) of which five were symptomatic. Based on design of the sensing amplifier and return to an all-metal housing in the unipolar lithium pulse generators, myopotential inhibition is being recognized as one cause of symptomatic pacemaker inhibition that is more common than generally appreciated. A method of evaluation and management options for symptomatic patients are discussed. Routine testing of all patients should be performed at the time of a regular office evaluation. If one model pulse generator appears to be particularly prone to myopotential inhibition, this knowledge should be considered in the choice of future pacing systems.

Production and energetic use of biogas from energy crops and wastes in Germany.

The production of biogas for reducing fossil CO2 emissions is one of the key strategic issues of the German government and has resulted in the development of new process techniques and new technologies for the energetic use of biogas. Progress has been made in cultivating energy crops for biogas production, in using new reactor systems for anaerobic digestion, and in applying more efficient technologies for combined heat and power production. Recently, integration of fuel cells within the anaerobic digestion process was started, and new technologies for biogas upgrading and conversion to hydrogen were tested. This article describes the trends in Germany for achieving more efficient energy production.

Production of biodiesel fuel by transesterification of rapeseed oil.

Fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) show large potential applications as diesel substitutes, also known as biodiesel fuel. Biodiesel fuel as renewable energy is an alternative that can reduce energy dependence on petroleum as well as air pollution. Several processes for the production of biodiesel fuel have been developed. Transesterification processes under alkali catalysis with short-chain alcohols give high yields of methyl esters in short reaction times. We investigated transesterification of rapeseed oil to produce the FAMEs. Experimental reaction conditions were molar ratio of oil to alcohol, concentration of catalyst, type of catalyst, reaction time, and temperature. The conversion ratio of rapeseed oil was enhanced by the alcohol:oil mixing ratio and the reaction temperature.

An intravasal non-occlusive contraceptive device in rats.

An implantable miniature biogalvanic cell was developed to kill the spermatozoa in the vas deferens by an electric current. Experiments in vitro and in vivo showed that a combination of aluminum/silver electrodes connected with platinum wires with the vas deferens fluid as n electrolyte is effective in killing spermatozoa. Female rats paired with males having biogalvanic devices in the vas deferens, which remained patent, did not produce any young.

Microbial fuel cells for wastewater treatment.

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are emerging as promising technology for the treatment of wastewaters. The potential energy conversion efficiencies are examined. The rates of energy recovery (W/m3 reactor) are reviewed and evaluated. Some recent data relating to potato-processing wastewaters and a hospital wastewater effluent are reported. Finally, a set of process configurations in which MFCs could be useful to treat wastewaters is schematized. Overall, the MFC technology still faces major challenges, particularly in terms of chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency.

Instrumentation, control and automation for full-scale manure-based biogas systems.

In recent years manure-based biogas plants (MBBP) have won more and more importance, because of the numerous ecological advantages. The processes are similar to processes, which have been well known for many decades in anaerobic wastewater/sludge treatment. As a result of technical progress and permanently rising prices for non-renewable energy, MBBPs have become more and more economically reasonable. Because of the economies of scale law more and more larger MBBPs are being built (250-2000 kW(el)). With regard to investment costs, reactor volumes and complexity etc., these (centralized) plants are comparable with small wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). Consequently, as actually in the case of the small WWTPs a rising use of instrumentation, control and automation (ICA) for larger MBBPs can be observed.

Production of electricity from proteins using a microbial fuel cell.

Electricity generation was examined from proteins and a protein-rich wastewater using a single chamber microbial fuel cell (MFC). The maximum power densities achieved were 354 +/- 10 mW/m2 using bovine serum albumin (BSA) and 269 +/- 14 mW/m2 using peptone (1100 mg/L BSA and 300 mg/L peptone). The recovery of organic matter as electricity, defined as the Coulombic efficiency (CE), was comparable to that obtained with other substrates with CE = 20.6% for BSA and CE = 6.0% for peptone. A meat packing wastewater (MPW), diluted to 1420 mg/L chemical oxygen demand, produced 80 +/- 1 mW/m2, and power was increased by 33% by adding salt (300 mg/L sodium chloride) to increase solution conductivity. A wastewater inoculum generated 33% less power than the MPW inoculum. The MFC was an effective method of wastewater treatment, demonstrated by >86% of biochemical oxygen demand and total organic carbon removal from wastewater.
