[Cathartic effects in autogenic training and its therapeutic benefit].

During the solar plexus exercises within the AT certain spontaneous sexual excitement or orgasm can take place. These kathartisch effects discovered for the first time by Wallnöfer and Luthe can be used legitimately for the treatment of anorgasmie. The combination of the autogen treatment together with open discussion between patient and doctor and thereby the revealing of the unknown seat of the problem can be of definite importance to the therapeutic success. Should the patient be of a hysterical nature, this treatment should not be used.

[Instrumental autogenic training of the mechanisms of regulation of the cardiovascular system functions in the treatment of patients with neuroses].

It is advisable that in the treatment of neurotic patients with marked vegetovascular manifestations, instrumental autotraining may be employed. It includes biomonitoring with pulse rate feedback according to the alternating sinusoidal law. The procedure of the autotraining is described in detail. 10 to 13 sessions of the autotraining given to such patients undergoing hospital treatment that also included routine therapy considerably improved the treatment results. The autotraining can thus be considered as a kind of the training of the mechanisms responsible for vegetative function regulation.

[Respiratory autogenic training in preparation for labor (RAT method)].

Preparation for childbirth with the R.A.T. method involves two therapeutic steps. The first concerns a conditioning relaxation technique derived from hypnosis. Schultz's T.A. and reflexology. There is a series of seven exercises, each of which is supplemented by a revision exercise. The central training exercises coincide with the achievement of sleep breathing, followed by physical deconditioning to external stimuli and semantic deconditioning to uterine contractions. The second step involves a form of analysis designed to examine the mechanism of emotions in a particular situation, marker by the loss of connection between the Ego, the body and the environment, as occurs during group autogenous relaxation.

[Results of electromyography of the perineum of women in labor prepared and unprepared by the respiratory autogenic training method].

The Authors, by means of surface E.M.G. of perineum, have analyzed statistically the potentials registered in two groups of pregnant women in labor, the first prepared according to the R.A.T. method, the second utilized as a control group. The complete automatization of the analysis was allowed to exclude any bias. The differences of the perineal potentials registered in the groups were statistically significant.

[The blind and autogenic training].

The orthodox application of J. H. Schultz's A.T. technique for bringing about change, growth and maturity in the blind and in this way helping them to face their existence more serenely is briefly described. The case of Miss. The terapeutic role of A. T. in sexuology and the differences characterising it in regard to the psychoanalysis and the hypnositherapy are explained. In the end the A. discusses about the utilisation of RAT relaxation in the group's dynamics.

[Analogies between psychotic experiences and those lived during respiratory autogenic training relaxation].

Comparative study of a dissociative experience of the bodily scheme lived in a group relaxing session (R.A.T.) comparable to certain somatic pains found in a schizophrenic situation. Such psychopathological experiences, usually considered by doctors as in themselves averse and without meaning, can be transferred from the emotive level to the rational level using the "Ontoanalytic" method and in this way be a valid contribution to the psicological formation of the doctors in as much as a more syntonic, human and staisfying doctor-patient relationship ensues, as Balint indicated.

[Psychosomatic effects of respiratory autogenic training relaxation].

The effects of R.A.T. relaxation, as we have been able to verify during an experiment conducted by a group of doctors of various specialisations at the Catholic University of Medicine in Rome, allow recovery of the availability to recognize ones' self in others and others in one's self, and to overcome the manipulation situation which persists in groups of competitive training. In groups which undergo R.A.T. relaxation, it in fact happens that the participant, in the same degree to which he trains himself to overtake his own psychosomativ hallucinations, is able to free himself from certain substitute and negative mechanisms of the mind, can better adhere to or separate himself from his body or from the environment thus obtaining as a result the re-organisation of the emotional economy at the disposal of the Ego. Such an experiment can evidently turn out to be quite formative and useful for the successive approach between doctor and patient.

'Positive and 'negative' aspects of the 'altered states of consciousness' induced by autogenic training, Zen and yoga.

As practices of altered states of consciousness (ASC) have become more widely used among psychotherapists who have become aware of the limitations of psychoanalytic, educational and behavioral approaches, negative aspects ('Makyo') of ASC have drawn their special attention. For the purpose of controlling or preventing these side-effects, (1) the problem of indication is most important, (2) and evaluation of the patient's personality is indispensable, (3) preparatory education about ASC methods and (4) guidance by experienced leaders are most helpful, (5) appropriate use of tranquilizers and (6) the mere presence of a supportive therapist at the place of practice can also be helpful.

[The process and effect of heaviness exercise in autogenic training: factor analytical study of subjective response induced by the concentration upon and formal language of the sense of heaviness in the arm].

The present study examined the subjective response induced by the concentration upon and repetition of the formal language expressing the sense of heaviness--"The arm is heavy." As a result of the factor analysis of the experiment using 60 subjects, the following five factors emerged. (1) Overall sense of improvement; (2) awareness of the sensation of the arm; (3) change to less nervousness; (4) awareness of positive aspects; (5) understanding of the formal language. Also, those who were aware of psychosomatic symptoms felt their change to less nervousness more significantly, and their understanding of the formal language was significantly higher than those who were not aware of psychosomatic symptoms. The result of the experiment suggests one possibility that excessive concentration upon the body concerning psychosomatic symptoms may have changed to the concentration upon the sense of heaviness, or that the reduction of the stress thereof may have brought the change to less nervousness.
