Hepatocellular carcinoma with carcinoid features.

A primary hepatic neoplasm with histologic features suggestive of both hepatocellular carcinoma and carcinoid tumor was studied by light microscopy, electron microscopy, and immunocytochemistry. These methods revealed areas of hepatocellular carcinoma, areas of carcinoid tumor, and mixed areas within the same cell. This case provides one more example of the coexistence of carcinoma and carcinoid in the same neoplasm and thereby supports the hypothesis that a malignantly transformed stem cell can differentiate in both epithelial and amine precursor uptake and decarboxylation (APUD) directions.

Endocrine-like cells in the terminal bronchioles and saccules of human fetal lung: an ultrastructural study.

An ultrastructural study of Kulschitsky cells was made on lung tissue from five human fetuses of gestational ages between 18 and 25 weeks. The cells were found to occur with relative frequency throughout the bronchi and bronchioles, as well as in the developing saccules. This report describes in detail the cells of the terminal bronchioles and saccules, where their long cytoplasmic processes weave through the epithelium and come into contact with intercellular spaces and the lumen. The cytoplasmic organelles have an orderly arrangement comparable to secreting cells. Dense core vesicles characterise the cytoplasm but clear vesicles and some with less dense, diffuse cores are also present, and may be seen outside the plasma membrane and in the interstitial spaces. The K-cells are usually colsely associated with capillaries or smooth muscle cells across the basement membrane. In addition, the rare occurrence of a small unmyelinated nerve fibre in the vicinity of a K-cell in a terminal bronchiole raises the possibility that the cells fulfill a type of 'mini receptor' role in addition to their probable vasoactive one. Evidence is given that K-cells divide in human fetal lung.

[The morphological characteristics of endocrine-cell cancers of the large intestine].

Histological variants of colon carcinoma depending upon the quantity of endocrine cells are distinguished on the basis of 66 malignant epithelial colon tumours morphological investigation. Special emphasis was made on the characteristics of the endocrine cell carcinoma, combined tumours with a combination of glandular and endocrine components, and amphicrin neoplasms. A trabecular-glandular variant of endocrine cell carcinoma is found to be predominant in the colon. The criteria are suggested for the identification of endocrine-cell tumours.

[Results of the morphometric study of endocrine cells of the antral part of the stomach in duodenal ulcer].

The endocrine system of the antrum of the resected stomachs in 19 patients with chronic duodenal ulcer was studied. It is established that a clear view of the hormonal system of the stomach can be formed on the basis of studying the histotopograms, or a large number of biopsy specimens of the gastric mucosa. The hormonal cells can be found in the deep portions of the mucosa, as a rule, in the region of the fundus and body of the glands. The ulcer recurrence after vagotomy not always can be related to hyperplasia of the endocrine cells of the gastric antrum.

Ovarian strumal carcinoid tumor with amyloid stroma--report of a case with 20-year follow-up.

We report a case of strumal carcinoid tumor arising in the left ovary of a 20-year-old woman. Histologically, microfollicular, solid, and trabecular areas were present, and amyloid stroma was demonstrated. Many cells contained argyrophilic granules, and thyroglobulin and calcitonin were demonstrated immunohistochemically in several areas. Ultrastructurally the cells resembled thyroid follicular cells and contained neurosecretory granules. It is concluded that strumal carcinoid is of endodermal origin, and shows evidence of thyroid and C-cell differentiation.

Incidence of neuroendocrine cells in the seminal vesicles and the prostate--an immunohistochemical study.

INTRODUCTION: Prostate and seminal vesicles (sv) are both androgen-dependent male sex accessory glands. The cancer incidence in these two organs is vastly different. Neuroendocrine (NE) cells are involved in the regulation of prostate growth, differentiation and in prostate cancer carcinogenesis. Thus, knowledge of the incidence of NE cells in sv may add to our understanding of prostate cancer etiology. METHODS: Samples of histologically confirmed normal prostate tissue and normal sv tissue from 20 men were immunostained for chromogranin A. The incidence of stained cells was evaluated semiquantitately. RESULTS: Neuroendocrine cells were detected in all prostate specimens, but not a single stained cell was found in any of the sv specimens. CONCLUSIONS: The lack of NE cells and, subsequently, of biogenic amines, peptides and growth factors may be a reason for the low cancer incidence in the seminal vesicles. Alternatively, the absence of NE cells can be seen as a hint that the stem cells of the prostate and sv react differently to endogenous and exogenous stimuli, and thus in the seminal vesicles, stem cells are not transformed into NE cells.

Exocytotic release of vasoative intestinal polypeptide and serotonin from mucosal nerve fibres and endocrine cells of the intestine of the goldfish (Carassius auratus) and the tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus): an ultrastructural study.

In earlier studies were determined the effect, presence and ultrastructure of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT)-containing nerve fibres in the tilapia and goldfish intestinal mucosa. 5-HT-labelled varicosities were found close to the epithelial cells; however, synaptic membrane specializations have never been observed. VIP-like immunoreactive nerve fibres appear to be located less frequently close to the goldfish epithelium, as in the tilapia intestine, in which the distance between the VIP- or 5-HT-labelled varicosities and the epithelial cells was also rather large (more than 2 micros). To establish a possible role of VIP and 5-HT as neurotransmitters involved in the regulation of fish intestinal epithelium both electron microscopical and immunoelectron microscopical methods were used to visualize the release of 5-HT and VIP from nerve fibres. We found exocytoses from VIP-ergic and serotonergic varicosities in the muscle layers of both fish. Directly underneath the intestinal epithelium of the goldfish, it was demonstrated that 5-HT could be released from scarce varicosities. The release of 5-HT in the tilapia intestinal mucosa could only be observed from endocrine cells.

[Gastrointestinal endocrine cells: brief history and main identification methods under light microscopy].

The gastrointestinal tract shows a wide spectrum of endocrine cells diffusely distributed along the mucosa, interspersed among the exocrine cells. These cells share several features such as the capacity to produce a series of peptides. Despite the development of digestive endocrinology, especially in the last decade and with respect to the biochemical knowledge and cellular localization of gastrointestinal regulatory peptides, their functional significance and their role in digestive phisiopathology remain partially unknown. This review represents a summary of the principal information about morphological and histochemical features, embryologic origin, historical data, methods of identification and types of endocrine cells, of gastrointestinal tract.
