Venereal diseases are known to occur most frequently in the age-groups of greatest sexual activity and more frequently among people in certain occupations (e.g., migrant labourers, military personnel and seafarers) than among the general population. The Brussels Agreement of 1924 and the great improvements in conditions of life at sea and facilities in ports for seafarers since the First World War raised hopes that venereal diseases would be brought under control. The discovery of penicillin and the simplification of the treatment of gonorrhoea and syphilis by its use increased this optimism. Studies undertaken between the two world wars and more recently indicate, however, that the rates of venereal diseases among seafarers continue to be considerably higher than those among the general population in the countries studied. Of particular interest are several studies concerning the treatment of suspected venereal disease on board ships not carrying a doctor. Stricter observance of the revised International Agreement of Brussels and of the minimum requirements for the training of personnel and the equipment in ports and on board ships is considered necessary.
The writers show how the polyclinic for venereal diseases at the Djkzigt hospital in Rotterdam is run. Their statistical study shows how they were struck by the large number of pederasts, and by the frequent occurrence of dermatological diseases amongst the various proctological lesions; e.g; acuminate condylomata.

The venereal diseases gonorrhoe and syphilis showed again in GDR an increasing tendency concerning their frequency by the year 1974, after having reached a low point about 1967. Now they occur relatively constantly. This increase observed throughout the world is caused by acceleration, changes in sexual behavior, homosexuality, increased promiscuity, tourism and other factors. Numerous false diagnoses of syphilitic symptoms such as herpes simplex, balanitis, carcinoma of the penis, angina, haemorrhoides, anal fissure, drug eruption and others cause the delay in the diagnostics and false treatments. Penicillin represents the drug of choice nowadays. Strict registration orders, intensification of the interdisciplinary cooperation, strict investigation of the infectious sources and endangered contact persons as well as enlarged health and sexual education are suitable weapons in the fight against the spreading of the venereal diseases.

In a study of the Public Health Advisory Centre for Veneral Diseases in Berlin-Schöneberg 207 patients with signs of urethritis and/or cervicitis were examined in antigen- and antibody-tests for infections with Chlamydia trachomatis Type D-K. On the strength of the high prevalence of 33.3% in the antigen test and 40.1% in the IgA antibody test an extension of the STD diagnostic by the Advisory Boards for Veneral Diseases is demanded by means of an appropriate amendment of the Law for the Control of Veneral Diseases for which epidemiological arguments are given.

Risk factors for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) were assessed among 54 male and 36 female patients attending a venereal disease clinic. Sociodemographic data and information on sexual behaviour/STD history were collected. Patients were examined and specimens taken for laboratory diagnosis. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that the significant predictors of genital infections among the male patients were: being unmarried, having multiple sexual partners, exposure to a symptomatic sexual partner, high frequency of intercourse per week, having repeated episode(s) of STDs and practising coitus interfemoris. In the female patients, exposure to a symptomatic sexual partner and high frequency of intercourse per week were the only significant predictors.
