Asian urbanization and development: a comparative view.

A comparative perspective on urbanization trends in Asia is provided. "The trends for the different Asian regions are first presented in the context of the world's more developed and less developed regions. Comparative data on the constituent countries in each of the regions are next shown. Then a modified urbanization-development model is proposed and subsequently tested empirically. The concluding section summarizes the findings and implications." The data are taken primarily from published U.N. sources.

Urbanization in Taiwan, 1964-1975.

"This paper examines levels and rates of urbanization in Taiwan and its ability to absorb a growing labor supply in its urban centers. Urban growth is concentrated in the Northern region and in large urban places. By 1975, half of Taiwan's population was located in places of 50,000 or more and 80 percent of the total population growth between 1964 and 1975 occurred in urban areas. Despite substantial urban growth and an even more rapid labor force growth, workers were absorbed into 'urban' industries and occupations. Based on this ability to absorb, Taiwan does not appear to be overurbanized and seems to fit the Western model." Migration patterns in India.

"The chief objective of the present paper is to comprehend the broad spatial patterns of internal migrations in India." Aspects considered include data constraints, the magnitude of internal migration, interstate migration, migration to rural and to urban destinations, spatial patterns, and areas of origin and destination.
