[Anomalous uterine hemorrhages in the climacteric. Their etiopathogenesis].

Anomalous uterine bleeding accounts for approximately two-thirds of the causes of outpatient gynecological check-ups for women in menopause. The high incidence of this pathology raises considerable problems from a clinical and social point of view. In this paper the authors outline the main causes of both organic and functional bleeding.

A case of progressive congestive heart failure secondary to severe anemia in a patient presenting with uterine hemorrhage.

In this report, we present a 42-year-old female patient who was transferred to our emergency department due to symptoms of congestive heart failure. She presented with severe anemia (hemoglobin was 1.3 g dl(-1), and hematocrit was 6.0%) due to continuous uterine hemorrhage and metabolic acidosis, otherwise she seemed to be free from illness. We diagnosed that she was suffered from chronic severe anemia due to uterine hemorrhage and congestive heart failure. Monitoring her hemodynamic status, treatment of congestive heart failure using diuretics and inotropes in combination with blood transfusion brought her good recovery. We discussed this case from the mechanisms of development of congestive heart failure in a chronic severe anemic condition, and pointed out that distributive effects of sodium and water may develop congestive heart failure without myocardial dysfunction in such a condition.

TCM treatment of adolescent functional uterine hemorrhage--a clinical report of 105 cases.

105 cases of adolescent functional uterine hemorrhage were refractory to western medicine, but successfully cured with Chinese herbal drugs during the period from April 1982 to July 1986. At the bleeding stage of the disease, the Triple Action Hemostatic Decoction [( symbol: see text]) was used, and at the re-adjusting stage when bleeding stopped, the Decoction for Strengthening Kidney and Reinforcing the Constitution [( symbol: see text]) was given. The rate of complete cure was 13.3%, of marked improvement 76.2%, of some improvement 8.6%, with a total effective rate of 98.1%. The author also discussed the etiological mechanism of the disease and the theory that guided him in designing the prescription in the light of TCM.
