AI Health message intervention: The role of message customization and message source in breast cancer screening among women of color.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the effectiveness of breast cancer screening messages with varying levels of customization (generic, targeted, and tailored) and to compare AI-generated versus human-generated messages. METHODS: A between-subjects experimental design with a control condition was employed. Message content followed a standardized structure and varied by level of customization: generic, targeted (demographic-based), and tailored (perceived susceptibility- and barrier-based). Messages were developed by either the authors or GenAI (ChatGPT-4o). A total of 391 participants recruited via Prolific were randomly assigned to five groups (generic, targeted-human, targeted-AI, tailored-human, and tailored-AI). Self-efficacy, behavioral intentions, attitudes, and message believability were measured using different scales. RESULTS: Customized (tailoring and targeting) health messages performed comparably to generic messages in shaping positive health outcomes. GenAI-generated messages also produced outcomes comparable to those of human-generated messages under standardized conditions. Significant negative indirect effects through message believability for the human-tailored condition was found relative to the generic condition. CONCLUSIONS: GenAI may be a useful tool for developing and customizing scalable health messages. Its effectiveness depends not only on customization but also on maintaining message quality, including readability, clarity, coherence, naturalness, and credibility. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: GenAI may support health practitioners in developing customized and scalable breast cancer messages. However, professional review remains necessary to ensure that the message is culturally appropriate, responsive to patient concerns, and suitable for use alongside patient-provider communication.

Acceptability of alcohol-based hand rub during neonatal care in rural Ugandan households: a qualitative study nested within the BabyGel trial.

BACKGROUND: Poor access to water, sanitation and hygiene exacerbates the spread of infections among newborns. The BabyGel cluster randomised trial assessed the effectiveness of a community-level alcohol-based hand rub with a training component in reducing infection or death rates among newborns in Uganda. OBJECTIVE: Nested in the BabyGel trial, this study investigated the acceptability of the BabyGel intervention among mothers and household members in Eastern Uganda, using the Theoretical Framework of Acceptability. METHODS: In 2022, we conducted individual semistructured interviews with mothers, and group interviews with mothers and other household members, all recruited from intervention-arm clusters. Thematic analysis combined inductive and deductive coding, structured by the framework's seven constructs: affective attitude, burden, ethicality, intervention coherence, opportunity costs, perceived effectiveness and self-efficacy. RESULTS: Twenty mothers and 14 household members participated in 10 individual and 10 small group interviews. Participants found the intervention generally acceptable, appreciating its convenience and perceived protection against infection. Many described hand hygiene changes that persisted beyond the intervention period. However, concerns related to its harmful effects, spiritual beliefs and social tensions with visitors occasionally influenced its use. CONCLUSION: Alcohol-based hand rub combined with a training component was generally well accepted, driven by perceived health and practical benefits, although concerns related to safety, belief systems and social dynamics remained. Because data collection coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic, a period of heightened hygiene awareness, the acceptability observed could differ in nonpandemic periods. Culturally adapted education, community engagement and reinforcement of correct use may enhance acceptability and sustainability in similar settings.

Marine air promotes structural compaction and coating growth of soot aerosols after long-range transport from East Asia.

Soot aerosol, a key global warming contributor, undergoes morphological and chemical transformations during atmospheric transport, particularly in humidified marine environments. This study investigates morphology, mixing state, and aging mechanisms of soot particles collected in the Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea. Transmission electron microscopy analyses reveal that coated soot particles dominate the marine atmosphere, accounting for over 98 % of soot-containing particles, with a mean mixing state index (χ) of 0.83. The fractal dimension (Df) of soot particles is 1.84 ± 0.05 in the Northern Yellow Sea, 1.90 ± 0.08 in the Bohai Sea, and 1.96 ± 0.07 in the Southern Yellow Sea, indicating structural compaction during long-range transport. Correspondingly, the average Dp/Dcore ratios (particle to core size ratio) are 5.3 in the Bohai Sea, 4.2 in the Northern Yellow Sea, and 3.9 in the Southern Yellow Sea. Notably, those ratios are higher in marine environments compared to those observed during continental regional transport from northern to southern China (3.54), suggesting enhanced coating growth in humid marine air. The results highlight the important role of marine atmospheres in accelerating soot aging, which in turn leads to significantly stronger light absorption compared to soot in continental air. Our results highlight the necessity of incorporating compact morphologies, uniform mixing states, and thick coatings into optical models for accurate radiative forcing simulations.

A systematic review of macaque brain stimulation: Trends and future directions.

Neurostimulation techniques can powerfully modulate neural circuit activity and provide causal insights into the relationship between brain function and behavior. Macaque monkeys have long been a key animal model for brain stimulation studies. While stimulating the macaque brain with one or a few electrodes has already taught us much about brain function and dysfunction, recent technological advances promise a future with more precise stimulation using many more electrodes. However, such possibilities also increase the number of choices an experimenter has when designing their study. We can learn from a rich past, but a comprehensive overview of which brain regions have been studied and with what stimulation parameters is lacking. Here, we present a PRISMA-compliant systematic review of 734 macaque brain stimulation studies using electrical and/or optogenetic stimulation. We find a striking bias in which brain areas have traditionally been stimulated: a mere 10 brain regions account for half of all studies, with the remainder of studies investigating approximately 150 other areas. Across studies, stimulation frequency robustly predicted direct behavioral effects independent of brain region, while amplitude did not. Future studies could more systematically explore less studied regions through lower stimulation frequencies (e.g., 20-50 Hz) alongside established ranges (∼200 Hz). Tools such as fMRI or optical imaging can capture neural circuit engagement evoked by these frequencies, even when behavioral effects are absent or remain subtle. Our synthesis offers a guide towards the next steps in high-channel-count, high-precision stimulation approaches.

Alginate-based edible coating incorporating green tea extract for preserving postharvest quality and safety of white mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus).

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a sodium alginate based edible coating incorporated with green tea extract (GTE) (Camellia sinensis) on the postharvest quality attributes and antimicrobial activity against Listeria monocytogenes in white mushrooms during refrigerated storage. The phenolic profile of GTE was characterized, and its minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) against L. monocytogenes (1.6&#xa0;mg/mL) was determined. Sodium alginate coatings, with (ALG-GTE) or without GTE (ALG) at MIC (1.6&#xa0;mg/mL), were characterized (functional groups, solubility in water, moisture, thickness, water contact angle and color) for their chemical and physical properties. The effects of ALG-GTE coatings on quality parameters (firmness, weight loss, color, pH, sugars and organic acids), enzymatic activity [polyphenol oxidase (PPO), peroxidase (POD) and pectin methylesterase (PME)], antimicrobial activity against L. monocytogenes (5 log CFU/g), and surface characteristics (3D optical profilometry) were assessed in white mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus) during refrigerated storage (8&#xa0;days, 4&#xa0;&#xb1;&#xa0;1&#xa0;&#xb0;C, 90-95% RH). The ALG-GTE coatings preserved sugar composition, particularly rhamnose, reduced organic acids accumulation and delayed weight and firmness loss, reduced color changes, and decreased PME activity in coated white mushrooms. L. monocytogenes counts decreased by 1.4 log CFU/g after 1&#xa0;day, and no viable cells were detected after 2&#xa0;days (< 1.5 log CFU/g) in ALG-GTE coated white mushrooms. In addition, ALG-GTE coated white mushrooms exhibited smoother surfaces than uncoated samples. These findings highlight the potential of ALG-GTE coatings as a sustainable alternative capable of improving the microbiological safety and delaying the postharvest changes in fresh mushrooms.

Quality assessment, prognostic factors, and biomarkers for brain tumor analysis: a comprehensive systematic review.

The brain tumors possess different causative factors and properties, making their diagnosis and treatment difficult. Growth of these cancers usually leads to compression of the adjacent nerves and obstruction of the flow of cerebrospinal fluid, thus leading to increase in intracranial pressure. This affects the working of brain in many ways; thus, the difficulty involved in its treatment. With the improvements in technology in neuroimaging, including Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI), Positron Emission Tomography (PET), and multiparametric Magnetic Resonance Imaging (mpMRI), the diagnosis process has become easy. The effectiveness of any form of therapy in such patients depends primarily on their prognosis. While it is a common practice that physicians determine the prognosis of the disease by considering the age of the patient, histological grade of the tumor, and resection status, now this method has become more comprehensive by adding molecular signature and genetic analyses to the list of criteria. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) allows a reliable molecular classification. It increases the level of risk stratification, facilitating the application of therapies tailored to individual patients. Thus, molecular oncology has greatly changed our views on brain tumors' pathology and prognosis while neoadjuvant treatments aim at increasing the survival rate. On the other hand, radiogenomics is a field of study that combines non-invasive imaging phenotypes and genomic information in order to find unique molecular signatures of tumors without collecting samples from tumors. Molecular biomarkers are absolutely essential in the diagnosis of cancer, treatment monitoring, and recurrence of cancer. Advances in liquid biopsy technology, particularly the methods for circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) and Extracellular Vesicle (EV) based analysis, have enabled the possibility of non-invasive monitoring of the progression of the tumors over time. This review highlights key studies and important scientific works about imaging technologies, biomarkers, and prognostic factors of malignant brain tumors.

Evaluation of three Aspergillus antibody assays for screening of chronic pulmonary aspergillosis: prospective diagnostic accuracy study.

OBJECTIVES: Chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA) is a frequent complication of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB), particularly in high-burden settings where access to reliable serological diagnostics remains limited. We evaluated the diagnostic performance of two immunochromatographic technology (ICT) lateral flow assays (LFAs) and an ELISA for CPA screening among patients with active or previously treated PTB. METHODS: In this two-year prospective multicentre diagnostic evaluation, serum from adults with prior or active PTB was tested using the Era Biology Aspergillus IgG ICT LFA, LDBio Aspergillus IgG/IgM ICT LFA, and Bordier Aspergillus fumigatus IgG ELISA. CPA diagnosis was established using a consensus composite reference standard incorporating clinical, immunological, radiological, and microbiological criteria. The Bordier ELISA was used as part of the immunological component of the consensus CPA diagnosis, with a cutoff optical density of &#x2265;1.0. Diagnostic accuracy, agreement statistics, receiver operating characteristic analysis, and latent class analysis (LCA) were performed. RESULTS: Among 340 participants, 24 (7.06%) had CPA. Proportion of participants with positive antibody tests among all tested individuals were 6.76% for LDBio ICT LFA, 20.0% for Era Biology ICT LFA, and 11.47% for Bordier ELISA. Against consensus CPA diagnosis, Bordier ELISA showed 87.50% sensitivity and 94.30% specificity, LDBio ICT LFA 58.33% sensitivity and 97.15% specificity, and Era Biology LFA 66.67% sensitivity and 83.54% specificity. LCA estimated CPA prevalence at 7.72%. LCA-derived sensitivities and specificities were 86.58% and 99.92% for LDBio ICT LFA, 83.39% and 85.31% for Era Biology LFA, and 79.10% and 94.19% for Bordier ELISA. CONCLUSIONS: The Bordier ELISA showed high sensitivity and specificity, while the LDBio ICT LFA demonstrated very high specificity with strong LCA-derived performance. These findings support the use of ELISA for laboratory diagnosis and ICT as a point-of-care screening tool for CPA in resource-limited settings. Era Biology Aspergillus IgG LFA demonstrated moderate sensitivity and acceptable diagnostic performance, indicating its potential utility as a supplementary screening assay for CPA in settings where rapid, point-of-care testing is required.
