Global Fit of Torsion-Rotational Transitions in the First Three Torsional States of CH(3)OD.

A global fit of the observed high-resolution microwave (MW), millimeter-wave (MMW), and Fourier transform far-infrared (FIR) spectra for CH(3)OD has been performed using a reduced torsion-rotational Hamiltonian that is obtained from the one-large-amplitude internal-rotation model. The CH(3)OD data set contains 460 MW and MMW transitions with two or fewer quanta in the torsion, v(t) </= 2, and 2348 Fourier transform FIR transitions with v(t) </= 1 and J </= 21. The MW and MMW transitions have been fitted with a root-mean-square (rms) deviation of 0.11 MHz (0.098 MHz for J </= 10) while FIR transitions have a rms deviation of 0.0002 cm(-1). These deviations are approximately equal to the experimental uncertainties, indicating that the MW, MMW, and FIR spectral transitions have been fit to experimental accuracy. Ab initio study of the barriers to methyl torsion and torsional frequencies of acetyl molecules.

A wide range of ab initio and hybrid density functional methods and basis sets have been employed to calculate the barriers to methyl internal rotation in a range of molecules with the acetyl moiety. Comparison is made of the computed torsional frequency with the experimental torsional frequency, nu(obs), for each molecule. With the MP2/6-311+G(3df,2p) combination of method and basis set, the agreement is better than 4 cm-1 for most of the molecules, where nu(obs) or the V3 barrier is well-determined experimentally.

Analytic torsion and Reidemeister torsion.

We announce a proof of the conjecture of Ray and Singer that for a compact Riemannian manifold the analytic torsion and Reidemeister torsion are equal. The proof involves studying the heat equation for certain manifolds M, equipped with metrics g(u), 0 < u < 1 which degenerate in a prescribed way at the boundary deltaM, as u --> 0,1.

[Torsional movements of the human eye. I. Torsional movements on inclining the head towards the shoulder].

The characteristics of the torsional eye movements during head tilting were investigated. Different conditions were used in the experiments. The subjects were in sitting and lying positions in the light and in the dark. A new method of recording with the suction device of Yarbus and the simple optical system allowed to have records without some redundant components of movement. This made record processing less complex and more accurate. The torsional drift in the slow phase of the eye movement was found present under any conditions. When being recorded simultaneously both eyes in man were in identical and synchronous movement.

[Effect of testicular torsion on the contralateral testis following experimental testicular torsion in rats].

Experimental torsions of the testicle were carried out in 100 adult and 80 premature Wistar rats. Histology revealed in 27.7% severe morphological changes in the contralateral testicles. Their possible influence on temporal or irreversible disturbances of fertility is discussed. CB-RIA investigations detected the presence of antisperm antibodies in the serum of 67 between 90 rats of the experimental group.

Global Fit of Torsion-Rotation Transitions in the Ground and First Excited Torsional States of CD3OH Methanol

A global analysis of reported microwave (MW) millimeter wave (MMW), and Fourier-transform far-infrared (FTFIR) spectra of the CD3OH isotopic species of methanol has been carried out for the first two torsional states (nut = 0 below the barrier and nut = 1 straddling the barrier) of the ground vibrational state. The CD3OH data set contains 472 MW and MMW lines and 5320 FTFIR lines, representing the most recent available information in the quantum number ranges J </= 20 and K </= 15. The transitions have been successfully fitted to within the assigned measurement uncertainties of ±100 kHz for most of the MW and MMW lines and ±6 MHz for the FIR lines with the use of a program (I. Kleiner and M. Godefroid, private communication) based on the formalism of Herbst et al. (J. Mol. Spectrosc. 108, 42-57, 1984). A convergent global fit was achieved using 54 adjustable parameters to reach an overall weighted standard deviation of 0.966. The new parameters for CD3OH are compared with previous global fitting results for the 12CH3OH and 13CH3OH isotopomers. Copyright 1998 Academic Press.
