CONTEXT: Recurrent drought is a major disaster affecting many countries. As a result of poor rain fall a major drought was forecast for Ethiopia in 2003. The country appealed for support to avert drought-related health problems. University of Gondar decided to respond to the appeal by sending students and staff to selected drought-affected areas. OBJECTIVES: To illustrate how an institution has turned the response to a natural disaster into a service-learning educational opportunity while maintaining equilibrium between the two. METHODS: The drought relief response of the institute was twined with the regular team-training programme and academic schedule of senior health science students and 190 of them were transferred to deployment sites. FINDINGS: Students provided support for the national effort of reducing drought-related morbidity and mortality by participating in multifaceted public health and relief activities, and fulfilled their regular learning objectives at the same time. DISCUSSION: This project demonstrated the use of a natural disaster as a learning method to expose students to a more realistic array of health problems and human conditions. It also demonstrated the feasibility of addressing social responsibility, while fulfilling academic responsibility through community-based approach. CONCLUSION: Service-learning is a valuable learning method. Balancing the service and teaching objectives and maintaining the quality of both can be attained through careful twining of the objectives of both components.
The experiences of an otological surgical team during a brief visit to northern Romania are discussed. The importance of careful assessment of local deficiencies and needs is emphasized and sources of funding and equipment for use during such a trip are discussed.
NYC RECOVERS, an alliance of organizations concerned with New York City's social and emotional recovery post-9/11, was formed to meet the need to rebuild social bonds strained or ruptured by the trauma to the regional system caused by the destruction of the Twin Towers. NYC RECOVERS, with minimal funding, was able to create a network of 1000 organizations spanning the five boroughs, carrying out recovery events throughout the 'Year of Recovery', September 2001 to December 2002. This paper describes the concepts, techniques and accomplishments of NYC RECOVERS, and discusses potentials of the model, as well as obstacles to its implementation.
This paper describes one aspect of a study into the experiences in long-term healing of a community following the 1983 Ash Wednesday bushfire. Forty participants were interviewed, of whom 26 were residents and 14 disaster relief workers. The paper concentrates on the experiences of the latter, describing how they came to understand the bushfire affected the community and how they managed disaster work. For novices it was a profoundly difficult experience, for which they received little help and had to manage with whatever skill they drew on in their 'normal' working lives, mixed with a good deal of intuition. The paper suggests that health workers in vulnerable areas require preparation for a likely disaster; that 'outsiders' need to deal through existing community groups and individuals to gain access to those in need of their skills, and that they also require preparation for helping 'insiders' who are themselves victims of the catastrophe.

The quantitative estimation of migration ability of transformed fibroblast-like cells of various epecies (mouse , rat, hamster, man) cultured on the substratum with grooves of various depth (5--40 mcm) was performed. Of the majority of 11 cell lines examined, a reduced migration capacity up to its total disappeanance was registered as compared with the homological normal embryonic cells. A more pronounced reduction of migration ability was shown in mouse and rat transformed cells and less in human ones. Migration of transformed hamster cells was just equal to the weak migrtion of normal hamster embryonis cells. These data shown a weak response of the analysed transformed cells to the relief of underlying substratum.
