The most essential components of the former Northlands Regional Medical Program Library Services are reviewed. Their impact is assessed through interpretation of responses to a questionnaire sent to rural institutions that had borrowed one of the NRMP demonstration core libraries. Although the NRMP had thoroughly promoted the need for these institutions to provide information services beyond their own collection, many of them were not ready to support an alternative means of educating library personnel, and had not made use of the extension services provided through either the University of Minnesota Biomedical Library or the Mayo Medical Library. A gradual change was anticipated, however, and some general recommendations are made as an outcome of this study regarding the direction of further efforts towards medical library development in the non-metropolitan areas of Minnesota.

The story that follows attempts to chronicle the history of one state's involvement with the Heart Disease, Cancer and Stroke Amendments of 1965, subsequently known as Regional Medical Programs. It is a history of an enterprise fraught with problems, but energized by the will, skill and imagination of scores of public officials and citizens who, over the decade of the program's formal existence, bent every effort to insure the realization of its fundamental purpose: putting the best, most advanced medical knowledge within the reach of the greatest number of citizens. The following is a chronicle of the Alabama Regional Medical Program.
The need for public health planning in France, recently led to the development of a Regional Program in Public Health Organisation (SROS) to describe geographical distribution of facilities and health care activities, in accordance with population needs. Isere Cancer Registry, using its own mortality and morbidity data, evaluated incidence (16,000 new cases each year) and prevalence (100,000 cases) in the Rh-one-Alpes area. Thus, knowing incidence and prevalence of cancer within each district by age and sex, it became much easier for public and private hospitals to quantify their future activities. Today, French cancer registries are conducting methodological studies to improve prevalence estimates, in order to use them in predicting future costs of health care in oncology.
