[Health status of postal service workers].

The improvement of health status of post-office workers along with identifying the leading causes of morbidity is an urgent task. The analysis of morbidity according to medical examination data and temporary disability showed the prevalence of nervous diseases among sorters of postal wrappers and letters, circulatory diseases among sorters of printed matter and operators of communication service, musculoskeletal diseases among sorters of postal parcels and wrappers. The deducted equations of multiple regression permitted to establish the impact of medico-social and industrial factors on the development of certain groups of diseases. The greatest impact of industrial factors on the development of morbidity (61-66 percent) was found among sorters of postal wrappers and operators of communication service, whose labour was regarded as hard and strenuous work. High prevalence of neurotic reactions, hypertensive disease, occupational diseases of the bones and organs of movement was found among workers of this branch. The cause-and-effect association between morbidity and industrial factors permitted to substantiate the system of health promoting activities.

Health promotion with the help of the world's postal services.

The dissemination of information and the raising of funds are vital in the struggle to achieve health for all. A useful contribution towards meeting both of these requirements can be made through the imaginative use of postage stamps, cancellations and seals on items of mail.

Mailability of sharps and other medical devices--Postal Service. Amendment to final rule.

In response to further comments, and to ensure that parcels covered by this rule will be in complete compliance with Department of Transportation regulations on shipping papers and marking of hazardous materials, and to preclude parcels of this type from being rejected by the airlines, we are amending the final rule titled Mailability of Sharps and Other Medical Devices, dated June 30, 1992.

[Evaluation of the effectiveness of health-related improvement in working conditions of postal services employees].

Basing on the physiological and hygienic research performed after a series of prophylactic measures, it was established that the introduction of rational working conditions in combination with physically active rest influences most postively the functional neuro-muscular state of upper extremities in telephone operators and mail sorters, and has a positive bearing on the hemodynamic indices, CNS and regulatory mechanisms status of operators and mail sorters.

[Bildschirmtext-Btx (the interactive videotex information system of the West German Postal Service): a medium for rehabilitation? Decision-making aids for the user].

The rapid development of new electronic information technologies is outlined, which are definitely going to affect existing social and economic structures. The new medium Bildschirmtext Btx (the interactive videotex information system of Deutsche Bundespost) will, in the opinion of the author, radically change many aspects of our life, as had been the case with telephone and television. The question is therefore raised as to the part Btx might have in the field of communication among those involved in rehabilitation. The contribution explains what Btx is and how it works. Examples are given to illustrate the wide scope of possible applications, which make Btx a useful tool in rehabilitation as well. Besides, the question as to the cost involved is answered. In the opinion of the author this new Btx communication technology holds great potential to become the "medium in rehabilitation".

Feasibility and acceptance of salivary monitoring of antiepileptic drugs via the US Postal Service.

Salivary and serum levels of phenobarbital, carbamazepine, and phenytoin are closely correlated. Salivary monitoring of antiepileptic drugs has a number of advantages including the potential for home collection if measured levels are unaffected by transit in the mail. Saliva was collected from 60 adult and 42 pediatric patients in the clinic. A control aliquot was immediately frozen, and a second aliquot was packaged and mailed to the laboratory. Patients were also asked to collect another sample at the same time on the following day and mail it to the laboratory. On receipt, all samples were held frozen and analyzed as a single batch by fluorescence polarization immunoassay. The effects of mailing, the duration in transit, and the season were assessed by multivariable, repeated-measures analysis of variance. One hundred two saliva samples were collected in a mean of 2.6 minutes, and the mailed aliquot was received in a mean of 6.4 days. Two children and 3 adults (4.9% of total) preferred blood collection, but the rest preferred saliva collection or had no preference. There was no significant difference between the control sample and the clinic mailed samples for any of the 3 medications. There were no significant effects of the duration in transit or the season on reliability. Transit of saliva samples in the mail does not adversely affect accuracy of antiepileptic drug measurement. Patients prefer and can successful collect saliva samples at home. Home monitoring of salivary antiepileptic drug levels is a cost-effective technique that deserves additional study.

More than just the postal service: novel roles for IFT proteins in signal transduction.

Disruption of intraflagellar transport (IFT) results in loss of flagella and cilia as well as their signaling activity, making it difficult to assess possible roles of IFT in signal transduction. In a recent issue of Cell, Wang et al. (2006) used a temperature-sensitive IFT mutant to separate flagella assembly from signaling activity, and they show that IFT has a direct role in forming signaling complexes in the flagella.

Occupational injury deaths of postal workers--United States, 1980-1989.

Extensive media coverage of work-related homicides at U.S. Postal Service facilities raised the concern about whether postal workers are at increased risk for work-related homicide, particularly from those committed by disgruntled coworkers. Based on national surveillance data, neither the Postal Service industry nor postal occupations are among the groups at increased risk for work-related homicide. To further assess this concern and to determine the relative magnitude of occupational injury deaths in the Postal Service, CDC's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) used data from its National Traumatic Occupational Fatalities (NTOF) surveillance system to examine occupational injury deaths in the Postal Service and compare Postal Service fatality rates with overall rates for all U.S. industries. This report summarizes the results of that analysis.
