Loose-coupling a cellular automaton model and GIS: long-term urban growth prediction for San Francisco and Washington/Baltimore.

"Prior research developed a cellular automaton model, that was calibrated by using historical digital maps of urban areas and can be used to predict the future extent of an urban area. The model has now been applied to two rapidly growing, but remarkably different urban areas: the San Francisco Bay region in California and the Washington/Baltimore corridor in the Eastern United States. This paper presents the calibration and prediction results for both regions, reviews their data requirements, compares the differences in the initial configurations and control parameters for the model in the two settings, and discuses the role of GIS in the applications."

Use of the population potential model for predicting the growth of cities in a region (with reference to Moscow Oblast).

"A modification of the population potential model is used to analyze the structure of the potential of population for cities of the Moscow region, to develop a relationship between population potential and city size, and to use this procedure to forecast future population change in Moscow Oblast cities." Cities in the region with a population of 50,000 or more at the censuses of 1959, 1970, and 1979 are included.

Bangkok's population and the ministry of the capital in early 20th century Thai history.

"This paper...focuses on two related themes which together enable us to put the emergence of Bangkok as a primate city in the 19th century in clearer perspective. First, we review population estimates for Bangkok. Here, the major point is this: Bangkok's population was much smaller than often suggested in the 19th century.... As long as the area of Bangkok was confined, and the population small, city regulation could be maintained within the traditional Siamese social structures, with Bangkok being, in effect, a royal domain.... The second part of our paper looks at the creation and the role of the Ministry of the Capital, formed in 1892.... The linking [of] Bangkok administrative structure with royal interests produced both a physical and economic stamp on Bangkok which has had an enduring effect on Bangkok's development."

Estimating and projecting the populations of urban communities.

"The author describes a model for estimating and projecting the populations of communities living in small areas within cities. The model provides a means of updating the demographic inputs needed for projection between censuses and means of developing scenarios of demographic change and housing development. The method for estimating small-area populations between censuses is evaluated with recently published 1991 [U.K.] Census data. Single-year age-group detail is provided and the associated databases are embedded in a flexible user interface. Illustrative projections are discussed and interpreted for the northern English city of Bradford.... The model, although particular to districts of West Yorkshire, has been specified in a general way and could be adapted for use with any British district."

An analysis of population and social change in London wards in the 1980s.

"This paper discusses the estimation and projection of small area populations in London, [England] and considers trends in intercensal social and demographic indices which can be calculated using these estimates. Information available annually on vital statistics and electorates is combined with detailed data from the Census Small Area Statistics to derive demographic component based population estimates for London's electoral wards over five year periods. The availability of age disaggregated population estimates permits derivation of small area social indicators for intercensal years, for example, of unemployment and mortality. Trends in spatial inequality of such indicators during the 1980s are analysed and point to continuing wide differentials. A typology of population and social indicators gives an indication of the small area distribution of the recent population turnaround in inner London, and of its association with other social processes such as gentrification and ethnic concentration."

Forecasting the reorganization of the settlement pattern in a region of formation of a territorial-production complex.

The author investigates the formation and development of territorial-production complexes (TPCs) in the USSR. "The main issue in preliminary studies for a TPC is to determine the long-term industrial and territorial structure of the TPC, as well as to set the sequence of priorities for the construction and start-up of plants in specialized sectors complementing and serving the various industries making up the TPC. Forecasts [must be] made for the size of the population and the dimensions of the industrial and social infrastructure subserving the industrial units in the TPC to be expected by the end of a specified period of time. Our purpose is to determine the dynamics of the above-enumerated elements of the system, as well as the main population growth parameters of all cities and rural areas in a specified region."
