[Calculation of the size of the population group necessary for evaluation of the results of measures for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases (on the example of the Kaunas survey)].

A method for estimating the size of the group necessary in evaluation of the efficacy of preventive intervention among the population is described. The parameters for calculating the necessary size of the sample from an equation and the fundamentals of compiling tables by means of electronic computers are discussed. The data of the Kaunas survey conducted according to the WHO program illustrate the statistical approach. The material of the Kaunas survey is also used to estimate the size of the population necessary for testing the hypothesis on the possibility of preventing myocardial infarction by reducing the risk factor.

[Results of a cytogenetic examination of population groups with intensive and limited use of pesticides].

Cytogenetic examination was carried out in two representative groups of teenagers living in zones with intense and limited use of pesticides. The average frequency of chromosome aberrations in the experimental zone was 1.35%, which exceeded significantly that in the control group. The found cytogenetic effect shows a potential genetic hazard of intense use of pesticides for the population.

Leukocyte antigens and disease: III. Association of HLA-B8 and HLA-BW 15 with insulin-dependent diabetes in three different population groups.

The distribution of 20 HLA antigens in 382 diabetic and 184 control subjects of white, Mexican-American, and black ancestry was studied. In all three populations, the incidence of antigens BB and BW15 was higher in the insulin-dependent diabetics than in the controls. The differences fell short of statistical significance when corrections were made for the number of antigens studied. When the results of previous studies were combined with our own, there was a highly significant association of insulin-dependent diabetes and the antigens BB and BW15 in the white population. It seems highly likely that this association would also hold true for the Mexican-American and the black diabetics if a sufficient number of patients were studied.

Urinary fluoride levels of population groups consuming salts different in fluoride concentration.

The effect of urinary level of a prolonged consumption of table salts containing 200, 250 or 350 mg/kg of fluoride has been studied. Urinary F concentration was increasing with all the three kinds of salt. In the group of consumers using 200 and 250 mg F/kg salt the equilibrium has been reached, but the urinary F level was still below that observed in populations who are drinking water of 1 mg/l F concentration. The equilibrium in the 2--14-year age groups consuming 350 mg F/kg salt could not yet set in. It is concluded that even a mixture of 350 mg F/kg is not in excess of the optimum and is far from the tolerated limit. Thus, this latter mixture may be used for caries prevention in areas with F-deficient drinking water, although it may be still less than the optimum.

Epidemiological, dietary, toxicological and clinical nutrition studies on low-income population groups from a geographical area with endemic chronic arsenic poisoning.

An epidemiological, dietary, toxicological and clinical nutrition study, in an area with endemic chronic arsenic poisoning, was made. In a pilot study on 100 subjects from Antofagasta Commune, water dietary intake was associated with age (r = 0.678; P less than 0.000005). In a dietary survey (N = 220), performed to measure the mean and median arsenic doses, by age groups, there was a significant correlation amongst males (r = 0.800; P = 0.00956) and females (r = -0.791; P = 0.01121). A nutritional assessment of a male population sample (N = 100), of labourers and their children, showed a negative per cent change for food energy in 9 of the 10 age groups, with a maximum negative value of -47.4 (11--12 year-old group), when compared with U.S. recommended daily dietary allowances. For total protein intake, all age groups exhibited a negative per cent change, reaching a maximum value of -27.8 (7--10 year-old group). Since two boys with chronic arsenical dermatosis and prekwashiorkor were drinking water with a mean arsenic concentration of 0.08 and 0.06 ppm, respectively, a maximum permissible concentration of arsenic in drinking water of 0.01 ppm has been recommended as an international safety standard.

Neurologic computed tomography in a defined population group.

A total of 766 residents of Olmsted County, Minnesota, underwent neurologic computed tomography (CT) from June 1973 through 1976; 981 scans were performed. The number of CT scans per 1,000 population increased each year and, during the period studied, the average rate based on the initial scan in each case was 2.4 and the rate based on all scans was 3.1. The age-specific rates were greatest among patients 65 years old or older. If CT use plateaus at about 6 scans per 1,000 population, then under conditions similar to those in this community, a population of approximately 400,000 would be required to assure adequate use of a CT scanner for investigating neurologic disease.

Antibody studies in the Kuru region. Immunological epidemiology of population groups in and adjacent to the Kuru region in Papua New Guinea. I. Enteroviruses.

A serological survey is reported for antibodies to Coxsackie, ECHO and polioviruses on sera collected in the kuru region of Papua New Guinea during earliest European contacts with kuru-affected and control populations through the period of highest kuru incidence. The results are discussed in the light of increasing European contact over the period of investigation. Suggestions are made concerning possible immunization programs with polioviruses.

Patterns of sarcoidosis in three population groups in New York City.

Caucasians in this study group presented in the chronic stage of sarcoidosis more frequently than the Blacks and Puerto-Rican-born. 2) Twenty-eight percent of the Caucasians and 26% of the Blacks who presented in the chronic stage of sarcoidosis, died of pulmonary insufficiency. 3) Puerto-Rican-born women are especially prone to present with erythema nodosum and Stage I radiographic sarcoidosis. 4) Sarcoidosis with extrathoracic organ involvement was more common in Black and Puerto-Rican-born patients than in Caucasians. 5) The size of the Kveim papules was larger in the Black and Puerto-Rican-born patients than among the Caucasians. 6) Two-thirds of all groups were insensitive to tuberculin. 7) The extent and duration of disease at presentation is a major determinant prognosis. 8) Ethnic factors influence the clinical patterns in sarcoidosis, but socioeconomic factors may preclude generalizations based solely upon clinic populations in New York City.
