The aims of the study were to isolate and to identify at species level the Prevotella strains in pus samples collected by needle aspiration from 25 Romanian patients with periodontal abscesses. Gram-stained smears and cultures on selective and nonselective media were performed from each of the 25 pus samples. The isolates were identified on the basis of Gram staining, cultural characteristics and standard biochemical reactions. The Gram-negative anaerobic bacilli isolates were biochemically characterized and identified at species level using the Rapid ID 32 A system (Bio Mérieux, France). Fifteen Prevotella isolates belonging to one of the following species: P. melaninogenica, P. denticola, P. oralis, P. loescheii and P. bivia were recovered. All Prevotella isolates reacted similarly in 20 tests in the Rapid ID 32 A system. The P. melaninogenica strain showed approximately the same biochemical profile and only two sugar fermentation tests were not constantly positive. The study confirmed that Prevotella is often involved in periodontal abscesses (> 50% of the cases) in association with other anaerobic or/and aerobic bacteria. P. melaninogenica was the most frequently isolated Prevotella species from the investigated cases.

Mandibular fracture is a rare but possible outcome of a periodontal abscess. A case of complete fracture of the mandible with abscess infiltrating the surrounding soft tissues is described. The patient reported nor trauma, nor locoregional surgery. Ultrasonography and orthopantomography revealed the fracture of the mandible and the abscess at the masseter muscle. Further preoperative diagnostic examinations included CT and MRI. CT revealed the complete fracture line more clearly; MR the extension of the abscess.
The aim of the present investigation was to determine whether spirochaetal count could help differentiate between periodontal and periapical abscesses. 23 draining abscesses were included, where 15 were diagnosed as periodontal and 8 as periapical, based on clinical and radiographic data. Exudate samples were collected aseptically and examined by both darkfield microscopy and Gram-stained smear. The results revealed a statistically high increase in spirochaetal count in periodontal abscesses compared to periapical ones. The obvious difference appeared adequate to differentiate both lesions and establish a rapid chairside diagnostic aid.

This is a case report of an odontogenic keratocyst of the maxilla initially diagnosed and treated as a periodontal abscess. The occurrence of odontogenic keratocyst in the maxilla with involvement of the antrum is relatively rare. The radiological appearance of this lesion on both conventional and panoramic radiography can be misinterpreted and emphasizes the usefulness of the computed tomography in this region.
On the basis of clinical examination it has been found that Metronidazole which was applied in 24 patients suffering from periodontal abscesses produced healing effects, lessened their pain and did not cause any side reactions. The values of PI (Russell rate) were considerably lower after the treatment comparing to the initial state, which confirms the therapeutic effectiveness of the drug.

Determining the causative factors of dental abscesses continues to tax the diagnostic skills of clinicians. A case is discussed of an unusually presenting chronic periodontal abscess involving the bifurcation of the upper left first premolar.
This article describes a complication that occurred with root-form implants: an acute periodontal abscess associated with an implant during the maintenance phase. The clinical treatment is outlined, as are the results achieved.

Spontaneous cavernositis is a distinctly uncommon entity. Corporeal infection and abscess formation have been described in association with priapism, cavernosography, intracavernous injection therapy, trauma and penile prostheses. We report a case of acute necrotizing cavernositis in a diabetic patient, which presumably originated with hematogenous seeding from a periodontal abscess. Isolation of typical oral pathogens from corporeal cultures provides bacteriological evidence of a dental source for the corporeal infection.
