Cytogenetic analysis of a gossypol-induced murine myxosarcoma.

Cytogenetic analysis of gossypol acetate-induced murine myxosarcoma demonstrated a stemline of 78 chromosomes and the presence of three marker (M) chromosomes produced by robertsonian translocation. Tumor cells at passage 1 that contain chromosomes M1 and M2 were nontumorigenic, whereas cells at passage 3 were tumorigenic in syngeneic mice and showed M1, M2, and M3. The presence of M3 has been implicated to be responsible for the tumorigenic phenotype.

Primary cardiac myxosarcoma in a child.

This is a detailed clinical and autopsy documentation of a rare entity--primary cardiac myxosarcoma in a 29-month-old girl. The patient had sudden onset of right hemiplegia and angiographic evidence of multiple occlusions of the left middle cerebral artery. Subsequent M-mode and sector echocardiography showed a mobile, pedunculated left atrial tumor, which was excised. No other tumor mass was noted at the time of surgical exploration, and postoperatively, the patient received a course of chemotherapy (vincristine, dactinomycin, and cyclophosphamide). After a temporary improvement in her condition, the patient died following several days of rapid deterioration; this was 3 months after the onset of symptoms. Autopsy showed that death was due to brainstem herniation secondary to massive infiltration of the brain by tumor, and there were also widespread systemic metastases.

Surgical treatment of pulmonary artery primary myxosarcoma.

Case of the 47-year-old man, clinically suffering from recurrent dyspnoea, cough, syncopes, haemoptysis, unsuccessfully treated with anticoagulant and fibrinolytic agents, is described. Large masses of a tumour, occupying nearly the whole lumen of pulmonary artery and extending to peripheral branches, were removed during surgery. The tumour was histologically and immunohistochemically classified as myxosarcoma. Following surgery, the patient was asymptomatic, could do his original job (lorry-driver) for the next 14 months. He died 20 months after surgery, showing symptoms and signs of progressive right heart failure. At autopsy, the tumourous obliteration of the pulmonary artery and adjacent thrombosis were found. Primary pulmonary artery sarcoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of recurrent pulmonary thromboembolism, especially when no peripheral vein thrombosis could be found.

[Early manifestation of a radiation-induced fibro-angio-myxosarcoma within an irradiation field for Hodgkin's disease (author's transl)].

The case of a fibro-angio-myxosarcoma within an irradiation field for Hodgkin's disease is reported (TD = 4025 rad). In comparison with other cases published in literature, the latent period of 4 years 10 months was relatively short. Radiation-induced sarcomas generally are observed in the irradiation field not earlier than after a free interval of 10 or 12 years, and with focal doses above 4000 rad.
