[The combined action of carbon monoxide and a heating microclimate on the human body under extreme conditions].

Through the research performed it was established that man's sensitivity to the toxic properties of carbon oxide (CO) is not influenced by microclimates with permissible temperature characteristics, and the sensitivity increases under the influence of heating microclimates leading to the limit temperature conditions. With carbon oxide (CO) in concentration 300 mg/m3, the endurance of heating microclimate under a complex influence of these factors decreases what manifests itself in earlier limit temperature conditions of the examined persons.

Heat acclimatization by a method utilizing microclimate cooling.

A new approach to heat acclimatization has been shown to be feasible during laboratory experimentation. Wearing microclimate suits containing dry ice as the coolant, three groups of men were subjected to a moderate work rate in three different environments for 4 h/d for 8 d. Physiological responses on a subsequent heat tolerance test indicate that the group subjected to an environment of 32.0 degrees C W. B. and 33.5 degrees C D.B. were fully heat acclimatized. The 33/35 degrees C group were also well-acclimatized but developed dangerously high body temperatures during the first 2 d. Only partial acclimatization was achieved by the 31/33 degrees C group. The reason why the men acquire heat acclimatization while wearing the microclimate suits in a hot environment is probably that microclimate cooling does not prevent body temperature from rising--it only prevents it from rising excessively. It should be remembered that only one-third of the body is cooled while the rest shows the normal sweating response.

Mucosal acidification and an acid microclimate in the hen colon in vitro.

Experiments were performed on isolated, stripped colonic epithelia of low-salt-adapted hens (Gallus domesticus) in order to characterize acid secretion by this tissue. With symmetric, weak buffer solutions, colonic epithelia acidified both mucosal and serosal sides. Titration measurements of the mucosal acidification rate (pH-stat technique) averaged 1.63 +/- 0.25 microEq.cm-2.h-1. Mucosal acidification was also evident in colons from high-salt-adapted birds and in low-salt-adapted coprodeum, but was completely abolished in the high-salt coprodeum. Mucosal acidification by low-salt-adapted colonic epithelium was unaffected by sodium replacement, mucosal amiloride (10(-3) mol.l-1), and serosal ouabain (5 x 10(-4) mol.l-1), although all three treatments significantly reduced or reversed the short-circuit current. Acetazolamide (10(-3) mol.l-1, serosal) reduced mucosal acidification by 15% and simultaneously increased short-circuit current by a similar amount. Colonic epithelia incubated in glucose-free solutions had significantly lower acidification rates (0.59 +/- 0.13 microEq.cm-2.h-1, P < 0.002 versus controls) and addition of glucose (15 mmol.l-1), but not galactose, partially restored acidification to control levels. Anoxia (N2 gassing) completely inhibited short-circuit current, but reduced acidification by only 30%. A surface microclimate pH, nearly 2 pH units more acidic than the bath pH of 7.1-7.4, was measured in low-salt-adapted colon and coprodeum. The acid microclimate of both tissues was partially attenuated by adaptation to a high-salt diet. Colonic microclimate pH was dependent on the presence of glucose and sensitive to the bath pH.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Effects of propionate on the acid microclimate of hen (Gallus domesticus) colonic mucosa.

1. Short-chain fatty acid absorption in hen colon is protonated across the apical border coupled to an apical electrogenic proton pump. 2. The surface pH of the isolated colonic epithelium was 6.27 +/- 0.05, when incubated in Krebs-phosphate buffer pH 7.0. 3. Propionate 7 and 40 mmol/l in the incubation medium (pH 7.0) increased microclimate pH to 6.47 +/- 0.04 and 6.56 +/- 0.04. Inhibition of metabolic activity by potassium cyanide 1 mmol/l increased surface pH to 6.66 +/- 0.06. 4. The calculated concentration of propionic acid in the microclimate is near-linearly related to the propionate concentration. Thus, the acid microclimate is not responsible for the Michaelis-Menten like kinetics of propionate transport.

[A plea for comprehensive interpretation in microclimate areas].

Microclimate is an important factor in modern intensive stockbreeding. At any rate, it ought to be judged in the context of other stress factors. Since microclimate is variable in the stable, it ought to be measured with the purpose of possibly effectuating a correction. The microclimate of a stable, which is also dependent on the outer climate situation, cannot always be improved solely by means of ventilation. However, the ventilation system should always be coordinated with the dung removal system of the stable.

[The effect of suction and pressure type of ventilation on the microclimate of fattening stations and on the production performance of pigs].

The microclimate in fattening houses of the TEROZ TACHOV type was studied in two fattening seasons. One of the houses had the original ventilation based on negative pressure and the other was tested as to the function and effect of overpressure ventilation. Under the given conditions, the comparison of the two systems showed that the pressure ventilation drove more air through the zone where the animals were kept, and was connected with higher cooling. Dust nuisance was reduced by the pressure ventilation system, but the temperatures and humidites in the fattening houses were influenced, since it slightly increased the temperatures in the house as a result of the flow of hot air from outside in summer, and considerably cooled the microclimate in the house in winter. Nevertheless, the pressure ventilation system provided a better microclimate for the pigs: their gains were higher and the mortality was lower.

[Various indices of microclimate in the newly built and re-adapted stables for race horses].

A study was performed to examine microclimate in 14 stables belonging to 10 horsemen's teams and clubs; five of these houses were new-built. In five race-horse stables housing 16 horses each, on an average, where the optimum air temperature ranged from 10 degrees C to 12 degrees C, measurements and examinations were performed in the winter period and the following results were obtained: space per 1 horse housed 42.9 plus or minus 8.7 m-3, relative air humidity 74.3 plus or minus 3.8%, CO2 concentration 0.175 plus or minus 0.027%, NH3 concentration 0.00135 plus or minus 0.00044%. A large majority of horse stables under our conditions lack suitable ventilating equipment for winter and for cold periods. Together with the present-day building technology and with excessive space of box-type houses, this implies that microclimate conditions are unsuitable and harmful to health; in particular, this is true of cold and wet conditions. In the existing stables this problem can be solved by additional heating, preferably with the hot-air system. It is necessary that horse stables should have good thermal-insulation characteristics, with plastered brick walls 45 cm in thickness and with thermally insulated loft. Floors must be solid, hard, and plane. Modern building technology and new materials must secure all the required parameters, with due respect to all factors constituting microclimate and to purposeful layout of race horse stables. It appears desirable to issue a state standard for the construction of horse stables.

[Sanitary evaluation of microclimate conditions at the ore mining and alluvial pits sites].

The authors summarized results of hygienic research carried in pits of Transbaikal region, Yakutia. Tchukotka, Kazakhstan, Kirgizia, Krivoy Rog, European North and other areas. Microclimate parameters in winze of mining and alluvial pits appeared to vary significantly and to depend on certain specific factors (depth of mining, climate geographic zone of the enterprise, temperature of the ores treated, etc.). Considering degree of influence on workers' heat state, taking into account significance of clothes heat insulation required, the authors defined 4 types of microclimate at workplace. For operative selection of optimal special clothing set, the authors represent dependence of proper heat resistance of clothes for main and auxiliary occupations on microclimate conditions.

Microclimate monitoring of indoor environments using piezoelectric quartz crystal humidity sensors.

The aim of this paper is to describe indoor microclimate monitoring at two different locations, Sandham Memorial Chapel, in Hampshire, England, and the castle El Alcázar, in Segovia, Spain. Piezoelectric quartz crystal sensors with novel humidity sensitive poly(ethyleneimine) coatings and Pt resistance thermometers were used to measure the relative humidity (RH) and temperature gradients across one of the paintings of the British artist, Stanley Spencer, housed in Sandham Memorial Chapel. The measurement period extended from December 1997 to September 1998. Each coated crystal was set in its own housing from which temperature and RH measuring circuits were connected via a cable to the computer. The 9 month monitoring period incorporated the range in seasons from winter through to autumn. Between December and February the RH at the back of the painting was found to be lower than that at the front. In March and April the reverse was true. Additionally, there were large spikes in the data in some of the months for both RH and temperature, probably caused by direct sunlight falling on the sensors. At the second site monitoring was performed for a shorter period, from December 1997 to early January 1998. It served, however, to show that abrupt changes can occur in the microclimate surrounding the painting. These fluctuations can with time lead to alterations to the paint surface and result eventually in cracking and damage to the art work.

[Effects of covering the windowpane with plastic film on microclimate and sunshine of the living room in a cold region].

Experiments were made to ascertain the effects of covering windowpane with plastic film in Hulunbeir region on microclimate and sunshine intensity in the living room. It was found that a good regulative effect on the room microclimate resulted by covering the windowpane with plastic film in the cold region. The room temperature rose distinctly. No evident effects were found on ultra-violet radiation and illumination. But the concentration of carbon dioxide increased to some extent. Attention should be paid to ventilation of the room.

[Setting standards for the industrial microclimate via integral indices under conditions close to overheating].

The possibilities of the WBGT and Belding and Hutch methods for standardization of the industrial microclimate in conditions, near to overheating, are discussed. The acceptable WBGT temperatures according to the norms of NIOSH are compared with the sanitary norms existing in this country. It is pointed out that the NIOSH norms allow significantly higher temperatures of the air (up to 10 degrees C) from the regulated according to the Bulgarian State Standards (BSS) 14776-79. The differences with the sanitary norms, regulating the radiant microclimate are also considerable. On this basis a conclusion is made, that the application of the WBGT method in the sanitary practice in this country should be preceded by the standardization of the allowable WBGT temperatures. The basic shortcomings of the method Belding-Hutch are mentioned: inaccuracies in the equation of the heat balance, incongruity of the accepted criteria with the up-to-date physiological data. The comparison of the two discussed methods show, that considerable differences in the interpretation of one and the same microclimatic conditions are possible. A modification of the method Belding-Hutch is proposed. The proposed model can be used in standardization of the optimum and the allowable microclimatic parameters depending on the heat radiation, clothes, on the negative temperatures a.o. A set of graphics for determination of temperature is proposed without using the globe thermometers by velocity, relative humidity, temperature of the air and heat radiation.

[The dynamics of the persistence characteristics of staphylococci under the action of the microclimate of a speleotherapy mine].

A decrease in the persistence characteristics of staphylococci under the influence of microclimate in a spelean pit has been demonstrated under experimental conditions. Clinical investigations have confirmed the capacity of speleotherapy to decrease the microbial contamination of the upper respiratory tract and to inhibit the persistence properties of staphylococcal microflora in children with respiratory allergosis, which seems to be the basis of the positive effect achieved by treatment with microclimate in a spelean pit.

[The treatment of patients with chronic cerebral circulatory failure by using laser puncture and the microclimate of the biotron].

A mode is proposed of treatment of chronic cerebrovascular disorders, such as initial manifestations of cerebral blood supply insufficiency (IMBSI) and dyscirculatory encephalopathy (DE) stage I-II in hypertensive disease, involving the use of laser puncture and microclimate of biotron. All patients (n = 162) were exposed to laser puncture (10-12 procedures). Laser puncture treatments were devised according to classical approaches of reflexotherapy, using determinants of electropuncture diagnostic method by Riodoraku. The treatments were carried out with the aid of infrared portable laser "Biomed-001". IMBSI patients presenting with vegetovascular dystonia and about 70% of IMBSI patients presenting with hypertensive disease derived benefit from a course of laser puncture, as evidenced by REG, EEG, acupuncture diagnosis, iridodiagnosis according. In DE stage I-II patients and about 30% IMBSI patients presenting with hypertensive disease good therapeutic effect occurred after treatment in a ward with a stable microclimate of biotron. The proposed method can be used for treating chronic cerebrovascular disorders and administering stroke prophylaxis.

[Revising sanitary norms of microclimate in industrial accommodations].

The article outlines new edition of a project "Sanitary norms of microclimate in industrial compartments". Up-to-date scientific data, results of studies concerning human heat state in experimental and industrial conditions, evaluation of the workers' health state helped to modify optimal and allowable parameters of microclimate, to rectify requirements for measurement conditions and measuring devices. When the recommended temperature could not be maintained, the duration of work in such conditions should be limited for prevention of overheating and overcooling. To examine prophylactic measures against overheating, the authors suggested an integral characteristic of heating environmental load (TNS-index) and set its safe values.

[The influence of dust and heating microclimate on lipid peroxidation].

In experimental pneumoconiosis both under normal and heating ambient temperature lipid peroxidation is not activated, although heating microclimate increases alteration of lung tissue and induces rapid and intensive pulmonary fibrosis. Association of dust and heating microclimate prolongs a period of "stress" myocardial affliction due to intensified lipid peroxidation and exhausted endogenous glutathione peroxidase, afterwards lipid peroxidation decreases with progressing sclerosis and fat degeneration in heart.

Drug absorption by the rat jejunum perfused in situ. Dissociation from the pH-partition theory and role of microclimate-pH and unstirred layer.

In anaesthetized rats the rate of appearance of benzoic acid and aminopyrine in jejunal venous blood was measured; the pH of the luminal perfusion solution was varied between 4 and 10.5. The pH-absorption curves were less steep than predicted by the unmodified pH-partition theory. A reduction of the mucosal unstirred layer thickness by means of the segmented-flow technique considerably increased the absorption rate without essentially changing the shape of the pH-absorption curves. The pH at the surface of the jejunal mucosa was 6.0, 6.5, 6.6, and 8.0 for luminal solutions of pH 4.0, 6.0, 8.0, and 10.8, respectively. From the absorption data the microclimate-pH was calculated which would explain best the observed pH-absorption curves. These calculated pH-values correspond well to the values measured at the mucosal surface. Therefore, it was concluded that a microclimate-pH caused the deviation of the intestinal pH-absorption curves of benzoic acid and aminopyrine from the prediction of the unmodified pH-partition theory. The mucosal unstirred layer represented only a considerable permeation resistance and was not responsible for the deviating shape of the pH-absorption curves.
