[Estimation of physical exertion by the AET ergonomic job description].

The study has been aimed at showing the advantages of using the AET ergonomic job description for estimation of physical workload, as compared to the traditional methods in which the estimates are made on the basis of the value of energy expenditure, static load and motion monotypicity. From tests on employees at 28 workposts it has been found that by analysing 17 factors involved in the overall estimate of physical workload according to AET, it is possible to characterize the work more precisely. The results of the tests indicate that AET estimates of heavy dynamic work are strongly correlated with the size of energy expenditure, whereas the estimation of body position--with the estimate of static load and the frequency estimate--with the estimate of motion monotypicity. New possibilities, with regard to the traditional method of physical workload estimation, are opened up by the AET method in relation to light dynamic work and static effort. The physical workload rate, calculated according to the AET method as the total of 17 elements estimated, does not differentiate the values of the workloads at individual workposts and, therefore, requires physiological verification.

Cover arrangements for consultants on leave: an analysis of job descriptions.

There is much ambiguity about consultant leave allowances and arrangements for cover in the National Health Service. We analysed job descriptions for 47 consultant posts advertised in mid-2000. 35 defined a duty rota but only 3 mentioned specific available leave (all different). In 32 there was no mention of cover for colleagues on leave. When a consultant is absent, colleagues tend to provide cover for emergency cases but not for elective admissions, which are managed largely by junior doctors. This arrangement is particularly hazardous in surgical specialties. If elective surgery is to continue when the consultant is absent, arrangements for leave and cover need to be more clearly defined.

Skill-based job descriptions for sterile processing technicians--a total quality approach.

Rochester General Hospital in Rochester, NY, included as part of its total quality management effort the task of revising job descriptions for its sterile processing technicians as a way to decrease turnover and increase job satisfaction, teamwork and quality output. The department's quality team developed "skill banding," a tool that combines skill-based pay with large salary ranges that span job classifications normally covered by several separate salary ranges. They defined the necessary competencies needed to move through five skill bands and worked with the rest of the department to fine-tune the details. The process has only recently been implemented, but department employees are enthusiastic about it.

[Blood donation. Job description of the function of a physicion in a district subdivision].

Following the 1995 national reorganization of the transfusion system, the Nord Pas de Calais blood transfusion center has modified its blood collection organization, with the creation of four districts divided into three or four subdivisions. This change was part of Quality Assurance implementation in the center. This article provides the job description for a physician in charge of such a subdivision as well as the method chosen to design this description (inspired by the diagram of Hijman). This job was conceived as an association of human skills knowledge with the strategy of the blood center. In addition to his medical activity, the district subdivision physician becomes a manager and an organizer. The method used highlights the participation of all disciplines involved in blood donation.

Is your job description a certification obstacle?

For case managers in the hospital setting, eligibility for the Commission for Case Manager Certification's CCM credential can be difficult to prove. Kathryn Bennett, RN, case manager coordinator at Bloomington (IN) Medical Center, found out that her official job description did not meet the requirements, even though her duties include case management across the continuum.
