Hypervalent iodine compounds as potent antibacterial agents against ice nucleation active (INA) Pseudomonas syringae.

Twenty-three hypervalent iodine compounds belonging to aryliodonium salts, 1, aryliodonium ylides, 2, and (diacyloxyiodo)arenes, 3, were tested for their antibacterial activities against ice nucleation active (INA) Pseudomonas syringae, and the MIC and EC(50) values were determined. All of the compounds examined caused a dose-dependent decrease in bacterial growth rates. Aryliodonium salts, especially those with electron-withdrawing groups, exhibit higher antibacterial activities with MIC = 8-16 ppm, whereas the nature of the anion does not seem to affect the activities of the diaryliodonium salts.

Intramolecular cyclization with nitrenium ions generated by treatment of N-acylaminophthalimides with hypervalent iodine compounds: formation of lactams and spiro-fused lactams.

N-Phthalimido-N-acylnitrenium ions are generated from N-acylaminophthalimides, a new class of precursors, by treatment with hypervalent iodine compounds (PIFA and HTIB). In HFIP, the nitrenium ions undergo intramolecular electrophilic substitution reactions to afford N-aminonitrogen heterocycles in high yields. In TFEA, spirodienones bearing the 1-azaspiro[4.5]decane skeleton are obtained by treatment of N-phthalimido-3-(4-halogenophenyl)propanamides with HTIB as a result of ipso attack of the intermediate nitrenium ion. Similarly, using PIFA in TFEA, ipso cyclization of unactivated benzenoid compounds occurs to afford spirodiene derivatives. This involves loss of aromaticity despite the absence of other activating substituents on the phenyl group.

Iodinated compounds and thyroxine binding to albumin in human breast milk.

Mature human milk samples from young healthy women on an equilibrated diet contained a mean of 81 ng/ml total iodine. Iodide represented a mean of 77% of the total iodine. Of the 22 ng/ml organic iodine, there was about 1 ng thyroxine and triiodothyronine and, after pepsin hydrolysis, up to 40% of organic iodine in monoiodotyrosine form. By electrophoresis, after incubation with radioactive thyroid hormone, we found an absence of binding on thyroxine-binding globulin, but thyroxine and triiodothyronine were bound to albumin with a maximal capacity 50 times higher than in human serum. All these differences did not favor transport of iodinated compounds from maternal serum to milk. In conclusion, milk iodide was taken up by newborn thyroid to make thyroid hormones.

[Measurements of 127I Mössbauer spectra for iodine compounds].

127I Mössbauer spectra of good quality were obtained at 20 K using a Zn127mTe source produced by high flux neutron irradiation of 66Zn-126Te at reactor core. The Mössbauer spectra for KI and some iodine(III) compounds with absorption intensity of about 5% suggest that the 127I Mössbauer spectroscopy is useful in elucidating the bonding nature of the iodine compounds. Preparative method of the Mössbauer source and experimental technique are reported in detail.
