The renaissance of excellence: re-establishing good management in a devastated teaching hospital.

An institutional development team of four technical advisers has been working at Mulago Hospital, the 1440-bed National Teaching and Referral Hospital, since 1983 to assist the hospital to re-establish working management systems, drug and supplies procurement arrangements and an engineering maintenance service. The hospital was in poor shape at the beginning of the project, but has improved over time. The Team works with counterparts to advise, coach, train, facilitate and support their development. External factors have contributed to the progress made, but the Team's contribution included long term availability in the hospital, the sustainable nature of the counterpart relationship, practical and material assistance, and access to outside charitable funds.

Toughen up.

PROBLEM: Within six months, AHS needed to integrate three recently merged hospitals running on disparate hardware and software systems into one unified system. SOLUTION: AHS partnered with DataStudy Inc., Parsippany, N.J., and formed a team to address the specific enterprise resource planning needs of this healthcare organization. RESULTS: The implementation team completed the project within the six-month time frame and incorporated functionality that went beyond the initial specifications for the project. KEYS TO SUCCESS: "To maximize the return on the always substantial ERP investment, healthcare executives must be aware of the many pitfalls waiting to derail every well-intentioned implementation."

A tale of two systems: a personal account of a successful consolidation.

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." This isn't a "tale of two cities." It's a tale of two Catholic health care systems in one city. For nearly a century, we were vigorous competitors. We were forced to consolidate our operations in 1987 as a result of the consolidation of our national Health Care sponsors. This is a detailed account of how that consolidation was achieved.
