Spectroscopic studies of the oxidation-reduction properties of three forms of ferredoxin from Desulphovibrio gigas.

Electron paramagnetic resonance spectra were recorded of three forms of Desulphovibrio gigas ferredoxin, FdI, FdI' and FdII. The g = 1.94 signal seen in dithionite-reduced samples is strong in FdI, weaker in FdI' and very small in FdII. The g = 2.02 signal in the oxidized proteins is weak in FdI and strongest in FdII. It is concluded that most of the 4Fe-4S centres in FdI change between states C- and C2-; FdI' contain both types of centre. There is no evidence that any particular centre can change reversibly between all three oxidation states. Circular dichroism spectra show differences between FdI and FdII even in the diamagnetic C2- state. The redox potentials of the iron-sulphur centres of the three oligomers (forms) are different. After formation of the apo-protein of FdII and reconstitution with iron and sulphide, the protein behaves more like FdI, showing a strong g = 1.94 signal in the reduced states.

Public sector financing of community-based services for children with serious emotional disabilities and their families: results of a national survey.

This article presents the results of a survey of all state directors of mental health programs for children on the agreement with and use of financial policies and practices which promote home- and community-based mental health care for children and adolescents and their families. Whereas only five states reported the implementation of all the financial mechanisms feasible in their states, a majority of states reported the use of mechanisms such as federal funds, state resources and incentives, and flexible funds to encourage the development of community-based care. Results also indicated that states with a local form of government or local district or board that served as the local mental health authority tended to have more of the community-based financial practices in place than did states that contracted directly with providers at the local level.

State-resolved thermalization of singlet and mixed singlet-triplet states of CH2.

The role of mixed states in the collision-induced thermalization, intersystem crossing, and reactive loss of CH(2) (~a (1)A1) has been monitored using Doppler-resolved transient frequency modulation absorption spectroscopy. Singlet CH(2) is produced in a hot initial distribution of translation and rotational energy states in the 308 nm photodissociation of ketene in a large excess of argon. Collisions with Ar and ketene cool the translational and rotational degrees of freedom, while depleting the total singlet CH(2) population through reaction and intersystem crossing. Direct monitoring of the time-dependent populations of rotational levels containing mixed singlet and triplet character reveals a rapid interconversion between the two components, but no discernable difference between the kinetics of the pure singlet and mixed states at longer times.

Alcohol use as a situational influence on young women's pregnancy risk-taking behaviors.

Recent studies have found that many young women just beginning their sexual lives use alcohol prior to intercourse. A large number appear to drink heavily enough prior to sex to compromise their ability to use contraceptives. The question emerges whether there is a relationship between drinking before intercourse, the nonuse of birth control methods, and unplanned pregnancies. The present research describes 43 instances of intercourse which resulted in unplanned pregnancies in 14- to 21-year-olds. Variables examined included alcohol use prior to sex, amount of alcohol consumed, the use of other drugs, the planning of intercourse, respondents' stated reasons for nonuse of contraceptives, and other general demographic data.

Observation of the c1A1 state of methylene by optical-optical double resonance.

We report the observation of the rotationally resolved spectrum of the c1A1 state of CH2 via sequential single-photon absorptions at visible and near-infrared wavelengths. Direct absorption from the lowest singlet state a1A1 to c1A1 occurs in the near UV, but it is weak because it corresponds to a two electron transition between the dominant single configuration approximations to the electronic wave functions. Some absorption lines in the c-a system were originally reported in 1966 [G. Herzberg and J. W. C. Johns, Proc. R. Soc. London, Ser. A 295, 107 (1966)], but the weak spectra could not be assigned at the time. Interest in the c1A(1) state was rekindled by recent ab initio results [S. N. Yurchenko, P. Jensen, Y. Li, R. J. Buenker, and P. R. Bunker, J. Mol. Spectrosc. 208, 136 (2001)] which prompted the present work. The new spectra provide accurate energies for rotational levels in the v2linear =11,l = 1 level of the state, and permit assignment of most of the line positions measured by Herzberg and Johns. The double-resonance technique used may be easily extended to the measurement of lower rovibrational levels in the electronic state and possibly also to access the d1A2 state which is theoretically expected to lie at similar energies but, for symmetry reasons, is not accessible from the lowest singlet state in a single electric-dipole transition.

Frequency of infectious gastrointestinal illness in Australia, 2002: regional, seasonal and demographic variation.

To estimate the frequency of infectious gastroenteritis across Australia, and to identify risk factors, we conducted a national telephone survey of 6087 randomly selected respondents in 2001-2002. The case definition was three or more loose stools and/or two or more vomits in a 24-hour period in the last 4 weeks, with adjustment to exclude non-infectious causes and symptoms secondary to a respiratory infection. Frequency data were weighted to the Australian population. Multivariate logistic regression was used to assess potential risk factors including season, region, demographic and socioeconomic status. Among contacted individuals, 67% responded. The case definition applied to 7% of respondents (450/6087) which extrapolates to 17.2 million (95% CI 14.5-19.9 million) cases of gastroenteritis in Australia in one year, or 0.92 (95% CI 0.77-1.06) cases/person per year. In the multivariate model, the odds of having gastroenteritis were increased in summer and in the warmest state, in young children, females, those with higher socioeconomic status and those without health insurance.

Probing occupied states of the molecular layer in Au-alkanedithiol-GaAs diodes.

Internal photoemission (IPE) studies were performed on molecular diodes in which the alkanedithiol [HS(CH(2))(n)SH, n = 8, 10] molecular layer is sandwiched between Au and GaAs electrodes. The results are compared to those from Au-GaAs Schottky diodes. An exponential energy dependence in the IPE yield was observed for the molecular diodes, in contrast to the quadratic energy dependence characteristic of metal-semiconductor Schottky diodes, indicating that Au is not the source of electrons in the IPE process in the molecular diodes. From the GaAs dopant density dependence, we also can rule out GaAs being the source of these electrons. Compared with the results of cluster electronic structure calculations, we suggest that IPE is probing the occupied levels of GaAs-molecular interfacial states.

Surveillance for emergency events involving hazardous substances--United States, 1990-1992.

PROBLEM/CONDITION: A review of existing reporting systems indicated that not enough information was being collected to determine the public health consequences of emergency events involving hazardous substances. REPORTING PERIOD COVERED: January 1990 through December 1992. DESCRIPTION OF SYSTEM: State health departments in selected states collect and each quarter transmit information about the events, substances released, and the public health consequences of hazardous substance releases (i.e., morbidity, mortality, and evacuations) to the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR). Five state health departments (Colorado, Iowa, Michigan, New Hampshire, and Wisconsin) began data collection on January 1, 1990. On January 1, 1992, the reporting state health departments included those from Colorado, Iowa, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Rhode Island, Washington, and Wisconsin. RESULTS AND INTERPRETATION: During 1990-1992, 3,125 events were reported from participating states to ATSDR's Hazardous Substances Emergency Events Surveillance (HSEES) system. Of these events, 2,391 (77%) were fixed-facility events (i.e., occurred at stationary facilities), and 723 (23%) were transportation related. In 88% of events, a single chemical was released. The most frequently released hazardous substances were volatile organic compounds (18% of the total 4,034 substances released), herbicides (15%), acids (14%), and ammonias (11%). In 467 events (15% of all events), 1,446 persons were injured; 11 persons died as a result of these injuries. Respiratory irritation (37%) and eye irritation (23%) were the most frequently reported health effects. A total of 457 (15%) events resulted in evacuations; of these, 400 (88%) were ordered by an official (e.g., a police officer or firefighter).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Epidemiologic profiling: evaluating foodborne outbreaks for which no pathogen was isolated by routine laboratory testing: United States, 1982-9.

The objective was to evaluate foodborne outbreaks of undetermined aetiology by comparing them to pathogen-specific epidemiologic profiles of laboratory-confirmed foodborne outbreaks. National foodborne outbreak data reported to CDC during 1982-9 were categorized by clinico-epidemiologic profiles based on incubation, duration, percent vomiting, fever and vomiting to fever ratio. From the pathogen-specific profiles, five syndromes were developed: a vomiting-toxin syndrome resembling Bacillus cereus and Staphylococcus aureus; a diarrhoea-toxin syndrome characteristic of Clostridium perfringens, a diarrhaeogenic Escherichia coli syndrome, a Norwalk-like virus syndrome, and a salmonella like syndrome. Of 712 outbreaks, 624 (87.6%) matched one of five syndromes; 340 (47.8%) matched the Norwalk-like syndrome and 83 (11.7%) matched the salmonella-like syndrome. After combining information on known pathogens and epidemiologic profiles, only 88 (12.4%) outbreaks remained unclassified. Norwalk-like virus outbreaks appear as common as salmonella-like outbreaks. We conclude that profiling can help classify outbreaks, guide investigations and direct laboratory testing to help detect new and emerging pathogens.

Hall magnetic reconnection rate.

Two-dimensional Hall magnetohydrodynamic simulations are used to determine the magnetic reconnection rate in the Hall limit. The simulations are run until a steady state is achieved for four initial current sheet thicknesses: L=1,5,10, and 20c/omega(pi), where c/omega(pi) is the ion inertial length. It is found that the asymptotic (i.e., time independent) state of the system is nearly independent of the initial current sheet width. Specifically, the Hall reconnection rate is weakly dependent on the initial current layer width and is partial differential Phi/ partial differential t less, similar 0.1V(A0)B0, where Phi the reconnected flux, and V(A0) and B0 are the Alfvén velocity and magnetic field strength in the upstream region. Moreover, this rate appears to be independent of the scale length on which the electron "frozen-in" condition is broken (as long as it is <c/omega(pi)) and of the system size.
