Formation of environmental persistent free radicals in soil of ammunition demolition site: Roles of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene and heavy metals.

Environmental Persistent Free Radicals (EPFRs) are a particular type of contaminant present in soil. This study investigated the formation process, environmental behavior, and main influencing variables of EPFRs in soils contaminated with heavy metals and 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) from an ammunition demolition site. The results showed that the concentration of total organic carbon (TOC) in the soil was negatively correlated with EPFRs (r = -0.29). In contrast, the content of TNT and copper was significantly positively correlated with EPFRs (r = 0.90 and 0.78, respectively), indicating that TNT acts as a precursor macromolecule in the formation of EPFRs in this type of contaminated soil. Transition metal Cu may be an essential carrier in EPFR production. In order to explore the possible formation mechanism of EPFRs, a simulation experiment was carried out under different temperature and light conditions. The results showed that the photolysis process of TNT was impacted by external energy sources such as heat and light. TNT was firstly adsorbed onto the surface of a transition metal (Cu), and then EPFRs were formed through further electron transfer. This is the first study to detect significant levels of EPFRs in the soil at ammunition demolition sites.

Functional neuroimaging subtypes of obsessive-compulsive disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) exhibits substantial clinical heterogeneity that may reflect underlying neurobiological diversity. Neuroimaging-based subtyping may advance precision psychiatry by identifying biologically distinct subgroups with differential treatment responses. This study systematically synthesized evidence from functional neuroimaging subtyping studies in OCD to identify reproducible neurobiological subtypes, characterize their clinical profiles, and establish a consensus-based classification framework. We reviewed 40 original studies employing machine learning, clustering, normative modeling, or classification approaches, encompassing approximately 8,150 patients. Consensus clustering identified three reproducible neurobiological subtypes. The Limbic-Hyperactive subtype, comprising approximately 40% of patients, exhibited amygdala and insula hyperconnectivity, elevated anxiety levels, predominant contamination and washing symptoms, and favorable response to cognitive-behavioral therapy. The Fronto-Striatal-Hypoconnected subtype, comprising approximately 35% of patients, demonstrated reduced orbitofrontal-striatal connectivity, cognitive inflexibility, predominant checking and ordering symptoms, and a favorable response to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. The Global-Disrupted subtype, comprising approximately 25% of patients, exhibited widespread connectivity disruption, greater symptom severity, and poor treatment response. Support vector machine classification achieved 81.5% accuracy for subtype assignment, though classification of OCD versus healthy controls showed limited generalizability in multisite settings (AUC 0.567-0.673). These findings support a neuroimaging-based framework for personalized treatment selection but require prospective validation.

Comparison of three tracking methods to assess usage of two pediatric powered mobility devices for young children with cerebral palsy.

Powered mobility devices are underutilized for promoting self-initiated mobility in young children with cerebral palsy due to prioritization of walking, caregiver effort, device characteristics, and environmental factors. Understanding device usage patterns is important to assess the impact of powered mobility interventions on child outcomes. As part of clinical trial (NCT04684576), three objective tracking methods including integrated loggers, Global Positioning System trackers (GPST), and caregiver reported activity logs (CRAL) were compared to provide insights into device usage patterns. Metrics included play session frequency, session duration, total usage minutes, and unique usage days for two powered mobility devices: Modified Ride-on Cars (MROC) and the Permobil Explorer Mini (EM). Twelve children with cerebral palsy used each device for eight consecutive weeks in home and community settings (16 weeks total), with device ordered randomized. Results showed no significant differences among tracking methods for the MROC. For the EM, only session duration differed between GPST and CRAL. Correlation analysis revealed variable relationships amongst tracking methods for both devices. The EM was used more frequently than the MROC, with significantly greater total usage minutes and session duration via CRAL, not GPST. The findings highlight the need for reliable tracking technologies that can be used across powered mobility devices.

Driven toward care, avoiding the end: A systematic review and meta-analysis of the relationship between death anxiety and healthcare utilisation.

Both overuse and underuse of the healthcare system have been recognised as significant problems. Relatedly, growing research has recognised the key role of death anxiety in driving various health-relevant behaviours. However, the relationship between death anxiety and healthcare utilisation has not yet been systematically explored. The current systematic review and meta-analysis addressed this gap. In total, 987 papers were screened for inclusion, of which 63 were included in the final review (Ntotal = 21,271). This included 33 quantitative studies, 27 qualitative studies and 3 mixed-methods designs. In total, 17 studies contained sufficient data to be meta-analysed. Overall, the included studies highlighted a significant relationship between death anxiety and healthcare utilisation; in particular, positive associations with desire for life-prolonging treatments and contact with hospitals and medical professionals. By contrast, a negative association was found with other aspects of healthcare utilisation, including hospice use and end-of-life communication. The sample type emerged as a significant moderator, suggesting that the relationship between death anxiety and healthcare usage was strongest in non-medical samples. The current findings suggest that death anxiety plays a key role in utilisation of the healthcare system. The fear of death may need to be targeted in psychological interventions, in order to ensure maximal effectiveness of health services, and improve outcomes for healthcare users.

Avian egg incubation period: Revisiting existing allometric relationships via surface area-to-volume ratio of an egg.

The incubation period (I) for bird eggs varies among species and is used in establishing allometric relationships. Research on variations in I shed light on the evolutionary mechanisms that gave rise to the differentiation of embryonic development in distinct taxa of birds. Here, using a sampling of 444 images from 444 avian species, 89 families and 30 orders, we calculated their major geometric dimensions: volume (V) and surface area (S). An assessment of the relationship between I and the measured and calculated egg parameters demonstrated the closest and most significant correlation (R = -0.760) between I and the S/V ratio that was adopted as a conditional indicator and reflects the embryo's metabolic rate. Approximation of the values of these parameters made it possible to derive a power-law dependence for the prediction of I depending on the S/V value of a particular egg (R2 = 0.757). The prediction accuracy was higher (R2 = 0.783) if the eggs of the family Procellariiformes (petrels), whose I value is characterized by a longer time, were removed from the general sampling computation. We conclude that the value of the S/V ratio can characterize both the metabolism of an embryo and the conditional thermal conductivity of an egg, which aids in ensuring the temperature regime of egg incubation.

Integrating genomic distance analyses in the description of a new family, genus, and species of sponge-associated antipatharians (black corals).

Antipatharians (black corals) are among the least studied coral groups, with much of their diversity still undescribed. Here, we present an integrative morphological, phylogenomic and genomic distance study of deep-sea antipatharians sampled in high seas areas of the North Pacific Ocean and from New Zealand's Exclusive Economic Zone. These corals grow on hexactinellid sponges - a unique characteristic in the order Antipatharia. Using a dataset of ultra-conserved elements and exons, combined with morphological analyses, we reconstruct phylogenomic relationships and formally describe a new family (Eidikopathidae fam. nov.), a new genus (Eidikopathesgen. nov.), and two new species (E. korallispongiasp. nov., E. zealandkoralliasp. nov.). Morphologically, the new family is distinguished by a corallum consisting of a network of loose branches that fuse with the sponge skeletal framework. Phylogenomic analyses recovered consistent topologies with strong nodal support, corroborating the distinct evolutionary placement of this sponge-associated lineage. Pairwise genomic distances estimated using the Tamura-Nei model were concordant with patristic genomic distances, identifying Pteridopathidae as the genetically closest family to Eidikopathidae fam. nov., followed by Myriopathidae and Stylopathidae, which were recovered as sister families in the phylogeny. This pattern shows that genomic distance complements, rather than simply mirrors, tree topology by quantifying accumulated sequence divergence among lineages. Together, these results provide the first genomic distance framework for Antipatharia, offering a baseline for future systematic, evolutionary, and biodiversity studies on this fundamental shallow, mesophotic and deep-sea coral group.

Rhinoplasty Difficulty Scale: Development and Psychometric Analysis of a Surgeon's Assessment of Rhinoplasty Technique and Nasal Deformity Correction.

BACKGROUND: Rhinoplasty surgeons lack a universal scale of the relative difficulty of rhinoplasty techniques and rhinoplasty deformities. OBJECTIVE: To compare the expert opinion of the difficulty of rhinoplasty techniques and rhinoplasty deformities among international rhinoplasty surgeons, as measured by a scale of difficulty. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of rhinoplasty surgeons collected training levels, experience, case volume, and perceived expertise. Rhinoplasty techniques/deformities (n = 64) were rated from 1-10, representing the least to most technically demanding. Rasch analysis was used to examine the fit of the observed data to Rasch model requirements, assess rating scale functioning, and provide estimates of internal consistency. RESULTS: Respondents (n = 63) were in practice (<5 years, 14%; 5-10, 20%; 10-20, 20%; 20-30, 26%; >30, 20%), and rhinoplasty volume ranged from <25 (14%) to >100 cases/year (32%). Self-reported expertise was comfortably novice (32%), intermediate (10%), advanced (28%), and expert (30%). Otolaryngology (42%), facial plastic surgery (30%), and plastic surgery (28%) were represented. Rasch estimates of internal consistency reliability were excellent (0.96 for surgeons and 0.99 for items); the item difficulties were more heterogeneous (mean: 0, SD: 1.23) than the distribution of surgeons (mean: -0.09, SD: 0.58). Survey items were ordered by difficulty, ranging from least difficult (inferior turbinate reduction = 1.01) to most difficult (contracted nose repair post-infection = 8.24). CONCLUSION: The newly developed Rhinoplasty Difficulty Scale provides ratings of common rhinoplasty techniques and deformities with a high correlation among experts using this rating scale.

Comparing Traditional Motor Speech Practice to Contextualized Speech Practice in Preschoolers With Childhood Apraxia of Speech.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to compare retention of real-word targets across practice conditions (contextualized vs. motor-only) within a modified integral stimulation treatment for preschoolers with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). METHOD: A single-subject experimental design with alternating treatments was used with matched target sets randomly assigned to contextualized practice, motor-only practice, or no treatment. Three preschoolers with CAS completed 18 therapy sessions, each consisting of two 25-min blocks: one contextualized practice and one motor-only practice. Order of practice was randomized each visit. Changes in percent phonemes correct (PPC) and lexical stress accuracy, derived from blinded transcription, were explored with visual analysis and effect sizes (standardized mean difference, d statistic). RESULTS: Meaningful improvements (d > 1) were observed in PPC across words treated in contextualized practice for all three children immediately posttreatment and for two of three children at the 1-month follow-up. Meaningful improvements in the motor-only condition were observed in two of three children immediately posttreatment and at follow-up. No meaningful changes were observed in lexical stress across any conditions in any participant. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides preliminary support for the feasibility of a modified integral stimulation therapy that incorporates elements of linguistically grounded therapies (linguistic retrieval, recasts, expansions) that may facilitate target retention in some preschoolers with CAS. However, other elements should be explored in conjunction with integral stimulation to maximize clinical outcomes. SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL: https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.33228981.

Bioprospecting microbial genomes to expand the biocatalytic toolbox of rubber oxygenases.

A set of rubber oxygenases was discovered through phylogenetic analysis and AI-based structural modeling of complexes of the putative enzymes with a substrate mimicking cis-1,4-polyisoprene. Sixteen candidate proteins were selected from thermophilic microorganisms, all sequence-related to the Latex clearing protein from Streptomyces sp. K30 (LcpK30). Sequence truncation and solubility tags were then evaluated to enhance protein expression, with the SUMO tag proving to be the most effective. Including LcpK30, nine heme-containing oxygenases were successfully expressed in E. coli NEB 10-beta cells, purified (35-157 mg L-1 yield) and characterized. Steady-state kinetics revealed significant rubber latex-degrading properties for six of them, with the truncated SUMO-fused LcpK30 (SUMO-LcpK30T) showing activity in agreement with literature. Notably, the catalytic efficiencies of all the expressed homologs lay within one order of magnitude and the oxygenase from Thermomonospora echinospora was found to be particularly promising in terms of activity, especially at high latex concentrations (more than 1% w/v). The analysis of reaction mixtures by both HPLC and HPLC-MS confirmed the oxidation of cis-1,4-polyisoprene to form the expected isoprenoid oligomers (n = 2-12), whose distribution was consistent with the usual endo-type cleavage pattern in all but one case. This bioprospecting effort afforded a platform of new rubber-degrading enzymes with diverse efficiencies and product profiles, capable of adapting to targeted applications.

Evaluating Patient Satisfaction and Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14): A Multicenter Crossover Study Comparing Selective Pressure Impression Conventional Dentures with Mucostatic Digital Dentures.

PURPOSE: To compare patient satisfaction and oral health impact between individuals receiving complete dentures made by digital methods and those using conventional techniques. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this randomized crossover clinical trial, 23 patients aged 40 years and older with completely edentulous arches were enrolled at three treatment centers. Each participant received two sets of complete dentures: one set created using conventional methods (selective pressure impression) and the other through digital techniques (mucostatic digital impression). The order of denture placement was randomized, with each set used for 4 weeks. A trained specialist administered treatments alongside research tools, including a general information questionnaire, a denture satisfaction survey, and the OHIP-14 interview tool. Statistical analysis was conducted using Mann-Whitney U test. RESULTS: Participants with digital dentures reported significantly higher satisfaction regarding treatment duration, comfort, confidence, chewing ability, esthetics, and overall satisfaction compared to those with conventional dentures. There were no significant differences in satisfaction concerning speech and pronunciation. Overall, the oral health impact on quality of life was similar between denture types, but participants indicated improved quality of life while using dentures compared to being edentulous. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with digital dentures exhibited greater satisfaction across various domains compared to those with conventional dentures, despite similar satisfaction levels in speech and pronunciation. The impact on quality of life was comparable between both types, as measured by the OHIP-14.

Melatonin Levels in 89 Individuals With Smith Magenis Syndrome.

In patients with Smith-Magenis syndrome (SMS), an inverted circadian rhythm of melatonin (MT) contributes to the sleep disturbance. Standard treatment of sleep disturbance with MT often leads to extremely high daytime MT levels, resulting in even more sleep disorders. We therefore retrospectively evaluated the MT data of 89 SMS patients. Mean MT levels in participants on exogenous MT were significantly higher than in participants that did not use MT (p = < 0.0001). In 9 participants with very high MT levels, these dropped significantly after discontinuation of exogenous MT (p = 0.0037). In 12 participants, MT levels were significantly higher after MT therapy start compared to MT levels before MT start (p = 0.028). MT is catabolized principally by the CYP1A2 enzyme, with a half-life of about 40 min. CYP1A2 genotyping was performed in five participants with high MT levels during MT use. Although clinically suspected to be a poor CYP1A2 metabolizer, all five turned out to have haplotype CYP1A2*1F, which is associated with increased enzyme activity. This shows that genotyping of CYP1A2 is not suitable to estimate the level of CYP1A2 enzyme activity. When prescribing MT, it is strongly recommended to measure a MT level prior to treatment in order to determine the dose to be given. Checks of the MT level during treatment are necessary due to the frequent occurrence of poor CYP1A2 metabolism. Since CYP1A2 genotyping does not provide adequate information about the level of CYP1A2 enzyme activity, we propose a simple way to determine CYP1A2 phenotype.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of the late positive potential and internalizing psychopathology.

The present study leveraged the Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology (HiTOP) framework to conduct a systematic meta-analysis to determine the association between the late positive potential (LPP) index of emotional reactivity and internalizing psychopathology. PRISMA guidelines were followed. Articles were identified through PubMed, APA PsycInfo, and Web of Science online platforms in May 2025. Included articles examined associations between the LPP to positive and/or negative stimuli and internalizing psychopathology. Risk of bias and publication bias were assessed. Results were examined for individual disorders, distress and fear subfactors, and the internalizing spectrum using two approaches: standard analyses that examined aggregate effects and hierarchical analyses that examined direct and indirect relationships. We conducted moderator analyses for sample, task design, LPP quantification, and psychopathology measurement. We included 63 studies across 5,360 participants (Mage = 19.65, SD = 11.1; 58.7% female). In standard meta-analyses, depression was associated with a smaller LPP to positive stimuli (r = -.06, 95% confidence interval [CI; -.12, -.003]). Specific phobia was associated with a larger LPP to negative stimuli (r = .21, 95% CI [.02, .37]). Distress was associated with a smaller LPP to both positive (r = -.12) and negative (r = -.11) stimuli when measured via clinical interview, and fear was associated with a larger LPP to negative stimuli (r = .10, 95% CI [.03, .16]). Hierarchical analyses indicated that the depression results were specific to the disorder, whereas the fear disorder-level results were due to the higher order fear subfactor. The LPP demonstrates discriminant relationships with distress and fear disorders and subfactors. Results were largely robust against methodological factors. Measuring Coping Strategies in Daily Life: A Systematic Review of Experience Sampling Methodology and Daily Diary Studies.

Advances in daily diary methods and experience sampling method (ESM) have improved the study of coping strategies in daily life and their role in shaping health and well-being. In this review, we examine study designs, measurement approaches, and analytical practices used to investigate coping in natural contexts. We performed a systematic review of studies published before 5 December 2025 that used daily diary or ESM to measure coping strategies over multiple days or moments. Studies were examined with regard to sampling schemes, assessment frequency and duration, measurement of coping strategies, incorporation of stressor appraisals, and analytic techniques used to model coping processes. Fifty-five studies met the inclusion criteria. Results indicated that 80% employed end-of-day diary designs, generally lasting 1-3 weeks, whereas higher-frequency ESM protocols were less common and ranged 2-14 days. Coping strategies were often assessed using abbreviated or single-item measures, frequently adapted from established questionnaires. Many studies incorporated appraisals such as perceived stressor intensity or controllability, enabling tests of coping flexibility. Multilevel modelling was the dominant analytic approach, allowing researchers to distinguish within-person dynamics from between-person differences. However, analyses were predominantly concurrent, and temporally ordered models remained comparatively rare. Overall, the literature demonstrates substantial progress in capturing coping in everyday contexts, yet heterogeneity in measurement and limited use of temporal modelling constrain cumulative knowledge about the temporal links between coping and psychological and physiological health outcomes. Future research would benefit from greater alignment between theoretical assumptions, assessment strategies, and analytic methods.

Left ventricular hypertrophy in hypertension: a systematic review and meta-analysis of echocardiographic studies published from 2011 to 2025.

AIM: An updated meta-analysis targeting the prevalence of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), a cardinal marker of hypertensive heart disease (HHD), over the last 15 years is lacking. Thus, we analyzed the literature in order to provide a comprehensive information on LVH prevalence, as assessed by echocardiography, in the hypertensive setting. METHODS: The PubMed, OVID-MEDLINE, and Cochrane Library databases were analyzed to search English-language articles published from 1 January 2011 up to 31 December 2025. Studies were identified by using MeSH terms and crossing the following search items: 'left ventricular hypertrophy', 'left ventricular mass', 'hypertensive heart disease', 'echocardiography', 'hypertension', and 'subclinical cardiac damage'. RESULTS: A total of 51 studies including 74 632 hypertensive patients were considered. Overall, the prevalence of LVH in the pooled cohort, defined according to criteria recommended by echocardiographic guidelines, was 36.6% (95% CI: 33.4-40%). Data provided by 18 studies ( n  = 40 108 patients) showed that the probability of having LVH was lower in men than in women (OR = 0.62, CI: 0.48-0.80, P  < 0.0001). Among patients with LVH (17 studies), the risk of concentric LVH was almost twice as high as eccentric (OR = 1.94, CI: 1.52-2.49, P  < 0.0001). CONCLUSION: Our meta-analysis suggests that the high contemporary prevalence of LVH reflects the failure of therapeutic strategies worldwide in the prevention and treatment of HHD. From a clinical perspective, these data imply the need for a more aggressive treatment of hypertension and related cardiovascular risk factors leading to LVH, especially in women.

A novel urease-producing strain effectively induces cadmium biomineralization under low-temperature stress.

Microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) has been widely used to immobilize Cadmium (Cd) in contaminated soils in mining-affected regions. However, its remediation efficacy under low-temperature stress, as well as the nucleation process that regulates Cd biomineralization via carbonate precipitation by psychrophilic bacteria, has yet to be investigated. Here, we isolated Pseudomonas sp. J-6, a novel urease-producing strain from tailings in high-altitude cold regions, exhibiting unparalleled cold adaptability at 5 °C and achieving 95.85 % Cd removal efficiency by MICP at 10 °C. Furthermore, the coprecipitation process of Ca1-xCdxCO3 was clarified through the continuous observation of the precipitates after the low-temperature MICP reaction. The crystal morphology transitioned from loose vaterite in the early stage to a dense square-block morphology in the middle stage. Cd2+ progressively shifted from a surface-bound state to lattice incorporation, ultimately resulting in the formation of stable Cd-substituted calcite crystals. In this process, low temperatures led to the formation of larger, highly ordered Cd-substituted calcite crystals, thereby strengthening Cd sequestration and its long-term stability. In addition, under low-temperature stress, Pseudomonas sp. J-6 induced MICP reaction decreased the bioavailable Cd in alpine slag soil by 44.85 % and enhanced physical properties. In the freeze-thaw cycles, the remediation efficiency remained stable. This study clarified the biomineralization potential in high-altitude cryogenic environments and the nucleation process of Cd biomineralization by psychrophilic bacteria-induced carbonate precipitation, filling a critical research gap in its application under extreme conditions and highlighting its promise for sustainable remediation of heavy metal pollution under low-temperature stress.

The Acute Effects of Blood Flow Restriction on Ankle Muscle Reaction Time and Proprioception in Healthy Individuals.

Blood flow restriction (BFR) induces hypoxic and metabolic stress, which may alter afferent feedback and neuromuscular control. However, its acute effects on ankle sensorimotor function remain unclear. The aim of the study was to investigate the acute effects of lower-limb BFR on multidimensional ankle sensorimotor function in healthy adults. Twenty-four participants (12 females, 12 males) completed two conditions in randomized order and a crossover design: BFR at 60% arterial occlusion pressure (AOP) and a control condition (20 mmHg). All measurements were performed during occlusion. Outcomes included joint position sense (active and passive), kinesthesia, static and dynamic balance, lower-limb muscle activation (surface electromyography), and muscle reaction time during sudden ankle inversion. BFR impaired active joint position sense at 20 degrees of inversion (p = 0.011), with no changes at other angles or in kinesthesia. Static balance deteriorated, with increases in sway area (p = 0.017), sway distance (p = 0.029), and sway velocity (p < 0.001), particularly under eyes-closed single-leg stance. Posterolateral reach distance decreased (p = 0.023), accompanied by reduced lower-limb muscle activation. Tibialis anterior muscle reaction time during 30 degrees of inversion in the ankle neutral position was shortened (p < 0.001), whereas peroneus longus muscle responses were unchanged. Acute lower-limb BFR impairs ankle sensorimotor control by reducing proprioceptive accuracy, balance performance, and muscle activation, while shortening reaction time. These findings suggest caution when applying BFR during tasks that require high postural demands or end-range control. Registration number and date: NCT07307339, 12/26/2025.

Effects of cold-water immersion after rugby-specific training on endurance performance.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated whether whole-body cold-water immersion (CWI) following rugby-specific training influences endurance exercise performance 24 h later. METHODS: Eleven healthy male collegiate rugby players completed an incremental cycling test to determine peak oxygen uptake (V̇O 2peak ) and time to exhaustion at baseline (Pre). One week later, participants performed a standardized rugby-specific training session consisting of warm-up, skill-based passing, contact drills, individual training (i.e., conversion kicking and scrummaging), and a bronco endurance test (total duration: 180 min), followed by one of two recovery interventions in a randomized order: 1) whole-body CWI for 8 min at 15 °C (CWI) or 2) seated rest for 8 min (Control). Participants then performed the incremental cycling test 24 h after each intervention. RESULTS: Training load during the rugby-specific training, assessed using heart rate-based training load and blood lactate concentrations, did not differ between the trials. Time to exhaustion (485±72 vs. 518±77 s, P=0.107, d=0.45) and V̇O 2peak did not differ between the Control and CWI trials, whereas the relative changes in these variables from Pre were greater in the CWI than in the Control trials (both P<0.05). Oxygen uptake, minute ventilation, and rating of perceived exertion during submaximal exercise were similar across the Pre, Control, and CWI trials. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that whole-body CWI following rugby-specific training may be associated with favorable changes in endurance exercise performance 24 h post-intervention compared with the control condition. However, the expectancy/placebo effect of water immersion on exercise performance could not be excluded.

Meta-analysis of growth and inactivation kinetics of Legionella.

Quantitative risk assessments intended to inform evidence-based water management plans and public health targets for Legionella in engineered water systems are constrained by fragmented and heterogeneous growth and inactivation kinetics. We conducted a meta-analysis of 25 growth and 39 thermal- and chemical-inactivation studies, fitting microbial persistence models to harmonize parameters. Nonlinear models outperformed first-order formulations, indicating that lag phases and resistant or protected subpopulations are central to Legionella persistence. Random forest analysis identified environmental and methodological drivers of variability based on 226 growth rates and reduction times for thermal (209) and chemical (135) inactivation. Growth was primarily governed by temperature, nutrient availability, and compatible Legionella-host pairings; thermal inactivation by quantification method, temperature, and turbidity; and chemical inactivation by inoculum size, disinfectant type, concentration, and host-associations. Accordingly, temperature-dependent growth parameters and exposure metrics for heat, free-chlorine, and monochloramine, expressed as TT (Temperature×time) and CT (Concentration×time), were derived as condition-specific inputs for predictive models. Growth optima around 37-40 °C, together with lag-time estimates, indicate that hot-water temperature setbacks and energy-saving practices may favor Legionella proliferation under repeated or prolonged lukewarm exposure. Culture- and viability-based TT differences highlight the need to consider viable‑but-non-culturable persistence in monitoring programs. CT comparisons suggest monochloramine may be advantageous because of its lower apparent sensitivity to host-associated protection. Although limited by restricted experimental conditions, the findings show that predictive models should account for microbial ecology, water matrix effects, and quantification endpoints. Future kinetic studies should prioritize realistic multi-host systems, strain pre-adaptation, complementary viability measurements, and standardized protocols and reporting to ensure reproducibility and enable robust system-level predictive modeling.
