Fund raising for libraries: a case study.

The present economic climate is forcing medical librarians to look at supplementary sources of income and actively to seek funds on behalf of their libraries outside their institutions. This paper looks at fund raising for medical libraries and describes the fund-raising activities of the Friends of the Library at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.

Beyond TV: Viewdata & its potential for fund raising.

Viewdata, a two-day information service that links computers with home TV sets, is likely to revolutionize American fund raising when it arrives in the U.S., claims the author. She presents the system's actual and possible applications for fund raising, drawing upon the experience of two charitable organizations in the United Kingdom that are already using viewdata with great success.

The penetrating educational effect of a mass-media based fund-raising campaign "heart for life".

A one-Sunday fund-raising TV-show in 1987 was broadcasted by the state-owned TV-channel in Norway which is the only channel covering the whole country. The six-hour TV-show consisted of a considerable amount of information on risk of heart disease intermingled with entertainment and money-counting results. Mass media had covered the forthcoming TV-show extensively. The show is presently evaluated as a nationwide mass-media based health education campaign through a stratified random sample of 976 persons aged 15 years and above. More than 95% of the population were aware of the campaign and 75% followed the TV-show beyond the news reports. The sampled persons were asked for self-reported changes in health knowledge and behaviour. Fifty-seven per cent reported that they gained new knowledge and 25% reported behaviour changes in a positive direction. Women reported more knowledge gain than men. Low socioeconomic groups reported more gain in knowledge and more positive changes in health behaviour than high groups. A close association was found between reported new knowledge and change of health behaviour (p less than 0.001). The results of the study indicate that this campaign has reached segments of the population that previously have been difficult to reach and that this is possibly due to the extensive advance coverage of the show in the mass media and the "entertaining" character of the show with emotional appeals in addition to factual information.

Accounting for a not-for-profit organization's fund-raising costs.

The AICPA's Statement of Position (SOP) 98-2 provides guidance on how a not-for-profit entity should account for costs associated with activities that involve a fund-raising component in combination with one or more mission-related components. Costs may be allocated among the various components of such an activity as long as the activity meets certain criteria specified by SOP 98-2. These criteria are related to the activity's purpose, audience, and content. If the activity does not meet the criteria, then all costs of the activity must be shown as fund-raising costs.

Fund raising from a volunteer's perspective.

Dick Rathgeber recently volunteered to lead a major fund raising drive for the Salvation Army in Austin, Texas. Of the $3.6 million effort, Rathgeber personally solicited $2.2 million, receiving pledges from nearly 80 percent of the calls he made. Although he has been a volunteer fund raiser for only four years, he obviously is successful at it. "It's a noble calling," says Rathgeber. "I've been richly blessed in my life, and this is my way of giving some of it back." The following article was adapted from a speech Rathgeber gave to attendees of NAHD's Region 5 Conference in San Antonio this past spring by Pat Korbus, writer for Seton Medical Center in Austin, Texas.
