[Presentation of the Salas obstetrical forceps (Forceps Salas)].

In the magazine of Gineco Obstetricia de México, January 1988, 30 to 34, I presented the three first models of the Salas forceps. In this article I describe the fourth and last design of my invention which has been patented in the USA as "Salas Obstetric Spatulas". It is mentioned in this article, the advantages of this instrument, which after being used in 533 applications by Dr. Fernandez del Castillo, SC and Dr. Viesca, MA they have come to the conclusion that the Salas instrument is excellent. Laufe et al in his book describe: There is no doubt that these forceps (Salas) could be made more acceptable to US practitioners. It is insisted in the modern classification of the forceps.

[Injury hazards in deliveries using the Shute forceps (analysis of 1016 forceps deliveries)].

Report about 1016 deliveries by means of the parallel forceps (W. B. Shute). This group contains pathologic-anatomical results of 30 stillbirthes or died newborns. Accordingly to the classification in subarachnoidal, subependymal or subdural hämorrhage there are only in two cases signs of obstetrical brain damage. The hypoxia is the most important reason of intracraniale haemorrhage. In order to an objektive indication, without progredient signs of fetal hypoxia the extraction by means of parallel forceps is not dangerous. We have used the instrument for extraction as well term as preterm infants with good results.

Magill forceps: a vital forceps.

Foreign body aspiration is not an uncommon problem in infants and toddlers, and should be considered as a serious and sometimes fatal condition. We report three cases of foreign body aspiration which were located below the vocal cords, causing a nearly complete airway obstruction with severe respiratory distress. In all cases they were successfully removed in the emergency department using a laryngoscope and Magill forceps. It is important for physicians who take care of children in emergency department to know the management of these life-threatening situations. Knowledge of pediatric advanced life support measures with airway management and proper training in laryngoscope and Magill forceps management can save lives in many children.

The use of a combination skin hook and tissue forceps: a new instrument for dermatologic surgery ("Frankel-Adson forceps").

The dermatologic surgeon frequently uses both skin hook and tissue forceps to accomplish atraumatic wound closure. Since this requires the surgeon to change instruments frequently during the course of the procedure, a combination skin hook and tissue forceps has been developed to make possible the simultaneous use of these two instruments. In addition, using a new technique that combines the two capabilities of this instrument, the surgeon can further reduce the risk of tissue trauma during surgery. The instrument and this technique are described.
