Financial support for research in general practice.

I have tried to identify all the main sources of financial support for general-practice research and to classify the work and the sources of support.The Department of Health is the biggest single source and the total sums involved exceed pound1 million.About a quarter of the money is spent by academic departments of general practice, about a quarter by research units directed by practising general practitioners, and the remaining half is spent by other academic departments such as social research, medical sociology, or community health.

[Economic status of the elderly and claims for financial support].

The health-related and social needs of aged people and their fulfillment are studied. Only a very weak relation is found between the financial situation and the claims for possible financial resources. On the other side education is found to have a key position for the drawing of supplementing pensions. The problems resulting for the assignment of financial support to aged people are discussed.

Financial support for poison control centers: a unique partnership with a chain drug store corporation.

The Oregon Poison Center has developed a unique partnership with a chain drug store corporation which sponsors the Center's poison prevention, public awareness, and professional education programs. Termed the Poison Prevention and Public Awareness Program, this affiliation offers significant financial support to the Oregon Poison Center on a continuing basis. It establishes an integral role for the drug stores in poison control activities. In addition, the program provides a mechanism for customer capture and reaps significant public and professional relation benefits for the corporation. This presentation describes the materialization of the affiliation, including the development of the program proposal, its presentation to potential participants, and the selection of a chain drug store corporation.

Medical school financial support, faculty composition, and selection of family practice by medical students.

OBJECTIVE: This study examines the relationship between the choice of family practice by medical students in the 1986-1987 academic year and nine variables: ownership of school, weeks of required family medicine clinical training, age of school, and six variables related to medical school financial support and faculty composition. METHODS: In multivariate analysis, three variables were found to be significantly related to choice of family practice (R2 = .441): weeks of required family medicine clinical training, proportion of faculty in family practice, and ownership of the school. A cluster analysis was performed using nine variables. RESULTS: Along with the multivariate analysis, the resulting nine clusters demonstrate that additional variables need to be identified to explain the variance in percentage of students choosing family practice at different schools.
