Explosive spread and effective control of human immunodeficiency virus in northernmost Thailand: the epidemic in Chiang Rai province, 1988-99.

The human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) epidemic began in Asia later than most in other regions but then spread very rapidly. Upper northern Thailand was severely affected, with among the highest infection rates in Asia. The first 12 years of the HIV epidemic in Chiang Rai, Thailand's northernmost province are described. HIV infection was not reported in Chiang Rai until 1988 but, within a few years more than half of the brothel-based female sex workers and one in six of 21-year-old male Royal Thai Army conscripts from the province were HIV infected. Infection rates in Chiang Rai have since declined following an aggressive prevention campaign, but the number of AIDS cases continues to mount, along with profound demographic, social and economic effects.

Sexual standards and behavior of the kibbutz adolescent.

This paper explores the effects of the past decade's "sexual revolution" on adolescents in the kibbutz. Greater sexual freedom, within the context of a stable and affective relationship, is increasingly finding acceptance among kibbutz youth and their elders. The change in adolescent sexual standards is discussed in relation to broader social and philosophical changes in adult society in general, and kibbutz ideology in particular.

Bashiran v. Muhammad Hussain, 27 January 1988.

The defendants appealed their conviction for the crime of "zina," or wilful sexual intercourse between a man and a woman who are not validly married to each other. They claimed that they believed in good faith that the woman's former husband had divorced her and that they were, thus, validly married and argued that they could not have committed "zina," because they had not "wilfully" had sexual intercourse without being validly married. The Supreme Court of Pakistan accepted this argument and held that, for the crime of "zina" to be committed, the persons accused have to have guilty intention to commit the crime. After examining the facts, it ruled that no guilty intention existed in this case.

Sexual behavior correlates of female orgasm and marital happiness.

The present study was designed to investigate sexual behavior correlates of marital happiness and female orgasm. Forty-eight female students of Baylor University who were 20 to 35 years old and had been married at least 2 years participated in the survey. A specially compiled 131-item marital relations questionnaire provided data for an intercorrelational analysis. Marital happiness, fidelity, and experience of orgasm correlated with certain specific sexual behaviors. These variables were related also to dissatisfaction with marital sex, which is consistent with previous research. However, when dissatisfaction resulting from performing less desired sexual acts was separated from dissatisfaction resulting from not performing desired sexual acts, the correlations differed, often markedly. Thus, the data suggest that unitary measures of dissatisfaction with marital sex may obscure meaningful differences. Also, information was obtained concerning the orgasmic and multiple orgasmic experience of the women, their extramartial experience, and their relative use of and preference for various intercourse positions and noncoital sexual activities.

Zarina v. State, 14 April 1988.

The defendants appealed their conviction for the crime of "zina," or wilful intercourse between a man and a woman who are not validly married to one another. The lower court had held that the female defendant was already married when she married the male defendant and, thus, their marriage to each other was not valid. The Federal Shariat Court of Pakistan rejected this argument and ruled that the female defendant's previous marriage was automatically dissolved when she converted to Islam, and, thus, her second marriage to the male defendant was valid.

Extra relationship involvement among women: are they different from men?

Factors related to three types of Extra Relationship Involvement (ERI) in women were explored: emotional ERI, sexual ERI, and a combination of sexual and emotional ERIs. A model, based on a decision-making model of male ERI and the additional variable of commitment, was evaluated. The research involved two studies with female participants (N = 112, N = 44) who had been involved in heterosexual relationships of at least 6-month duration. The major finding was that women engage in emotional and combined ERIs but rarely enter into solely sexual ERIs. It was demonstrated that social norms, planning, relationship satisfaction, and commitment were influential in predicting emotional and combined ERI intentions. Past ERI behavior was a strong predictor of future emotional and combined ERI behavior, but planning also added to the prediction of combined ERI behavior. Women who had engaged in emotional ERIs and combined ERIs indicated romantic affect as the main reason for their ERI behavior. Overall, it was demonstrated that women's intentions to engage in ERI were related to cognitive processes and relationship variables, and that ERI behavior, although generally habitual, was also predicted by cognitive processes.
