[Correlation of heredity and environmental factors in the etiology of Vilyui encephalomyelitis. II. A population genetic study in districts of Vilyui encephalomyelitis distribution].

Population-genetic investigation was carried out in the regions endemic for Viljuisk encephalomyelitis (VE). The following indices were estimated: the relationship coefficient, the inbreeding coefficient, the intensity of migration, genetic structure of the population. The aim of the investigation was to explain causes of intrapopulational and, in some cases, of intragenus accumulation of the VE patients. No evidence of isolation or increased inbreeding were found in highly affected populations. The genetic structure of a group of VE patients tested for 9 polymorphic systems did not reveal any deviation from the control group. Several VE cases in healthy populations occured in some years after the immigration of a VE patient. These data confirm the hypothesis that VE is transmitted from a VE patient to healthy persons. Among these persons fall ill those who have a hereditary determined increased sensitivity to VE which results in intrapopulation and intragenus accumulation of VE cases.

[Experimental allergic encephalomyelitis as a model for the study of therapeutic concepts for encephalomyelitis disseminata].

The induction of immunological tolerance with, and for, the caused organotypical antigen is a conception for a specific therapy for neuroimmunological diseases with at least a partial autoallergic pathogenesis. Appropriate to a set step-by-step programme for the development of antigen-specific therapy preventive tolerance experiments were carried out at the model of experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAEM) with allogenic myelin basic protein (BP) prepared from rabbits. The result is: 100 ug BP given intravenously simultaneously with 100 ug BP in incomplete Freud's adjuvant given intracutanously twice a week and 40 mg Cyclophosphamid given daily during the minor clinical incidence rate and no signs of EAEM pathomorphologically. A longlasting tolerance for the BP could be obtained as a test proved after 100 days. Hints are given for further potential therapeutic treatments, such as the use of antigen bound chemically to the immunosuppressive drug or the use of chemically modified BP for the induction of a specific tolerance.

[Pathologic anatomy of cytomegalovirus encephalomyelitis and varicella-zona virus encephalomyelitis].

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection of the nervous system is frequent in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and can be responsible for encephalitis, encephalomyelitis, meningoradiculitis or polyradiculo-neuropathy. Encephalitis is characterized at microscopy by its periventricular and cerebellar location, and by the presence of cytomegalic cells, containing intranuclear and/or intracytoplasmic inclusions, microglial nodules and necrotic foci. The virus can infect almost all types of cells. Coexistence of CMV and HIV has been observed in giant cells of macrophagic origin. It has been suggested that the two viruses could act in synergy. The nervous system is seldom infected by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV) in AIDS. The infection can be responsible for multifocal leukoencephalitis, ventriculitis, vascular lesions associated or not with cerebral infarction, or with meningomyeloradiculitis. In almost all cell types Cowdry's type A intranuclear inclusions have been found. The virus can be demonstrated by immunohistochemistry or in situ hybridization. VZV antigens have been reported in the walls of vessels damaged by a non inflammatory obliterating vasculopathy or by a granulomatous angiitis. Coexistence of VZV and HIV has been observed in giant cells of macrophagic origin, and synergy between those two viruses has been suspected.

Definitions and aetiology of myalgic encephalomyelitis: how the Canadian consensus clinical definition of myalgic encephalomyelitis works.

A perspective on the various definitions of myalgic encephalomyelitis and the process of discovering its aetiology is presented. The importance of clinical guidelines is emphasised to encourage clinicians to provide clear descriptions of their individual patients required for proper clinical activity; diagnosis, estimation of severity of effect, prognosis, treatment and rehabilitation. This individual knowledge is informed by general and (hopefully) publicly confirmed knowledge resulting from scientific research during the second-person interaction which lies at the core of the clinical encounter. Both types of knowledge are essential.

[Laminin-binding protein as a cellular receptor for the equine Venezuelan encephalomyelitis virus: Report 2. Inhibition of replication of equine Venezuelan encephalomyelitis virus by blocking laminin-binding protein on the surface of Vero cells].

A possible inhibition of the Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis (VEE) virus replication in Vero cells through the laminin-binding protein (LBP) blocking in the surface of such cells was investigated in order to verify the LBP value. It was demonstrated, on the basis of the flow scanning cytometry and FITC-labeled antibodies to LBP, that there are at least 263 thousand LBP molecules in the Vero cells' surface. Blocking of the molecules by rabbit polyclonal antibodies to 43 kD of the recombinant LBP (rLBP) was shown to inhibit the VEE virus replication in Vero cells by more than 300,000 times, which made them virtually resistant to the possibility of VEE virus infection. This also confirmed that LBP is a target-molecule for VEE virus in Vero cells with the interplay between VEE virus and LBP in the cells' surface being the initial stage of virions' penetration into the cell and of their replication inside the cell.
