Effect of preseasonal enzyme potentiated desensitisation (EPD) on plasma-IL-6 and IL-10 of grass pollen-sensitive asthmatic children.

EPD is a method of preventive immunotherapy which employs b-glucuronidase as a biological response modifier. Plasma IL-6 and IL-10 were measured before a single injection of EPD, 24 hours later and 15 days after in a group of 17 children suffering from grass pollen asthma. 17 normal untreated children were used as controls. Although the study was conducted before the grass pollen season when the allergic children were free of symptoms, their plasma IL-6 and IL-10 were significantly elevated before the injection of EPD. 24 hours after treatment the plasma IL-10 had increased significantly and there was also a slight rise in IL-6. 15 days after treatment IL-6 had fallen to normal but IL-10 was still elevated. These findings suggest antigen-specific and non-specific mechanisms by which EPD may produce clinical improvement.

Validation of the Edinburgh postnatal depression scale (EPDS) in a sample of women with high-risk pregnancies in France.

UNLABELLED: This research is intended to validate the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) in a high-risk pregnant population. METHOD: Sixty women attending antenatal consultations for pregnancy complication in a major Parisian maternity facility were included. They completed the EPDS and were then interviewed according to a standardised psychiatric interview. RESULTS: The study of its sensitivity, specificity and predictive values, with a DSM-IV diagnosis of major depression as the reference, found that 11.5 was the optimal cut-off score (Se 0.80; Sp 0.80). Its validity as an index of severity of depression was also good as well as internal consistency and reliability. Factor analysis showed that its internal structure is composed of two subscales (F2 "depression" and F1 with items reflecting depression and other disorders, including anxiety). CONCLUSION: The French version of the EPDS would be a valid instrument to identify pregnant women who are likely to have clinical major depression. The results may have to be confirmed on a community sample before clinical use.

The Eukaryotic Promoter Database EPD.

The Eukaryotic Promoter Database (EPD) is an annotated non-redundant collection of experimentally characterised eukaryotic POL II promoters. The underlying definition of a promoter is that of a transcription initiation site. All information presented in EPD results from an independent evaluation of primary experimental data shown in the biological literature. Sequences flanking transcription initiation sites are indirectly given by pointers to EMBL sequences. The annotation part of a promoter entry includes description of the promoter-defining evidence, cross-references to other databases, and bibliographic references. Being designed as a resource for comparative sequence analysis, EPD is structured in a way that facilitates dynamic extraction of biologically meaningful promoter subsets. The database is available through the World Wide Web at URL http://cmpteam4.unil.ch

The Eukaryotic Promoter Database (EPD): recent developments.

The Eukaryotic Promoter Database (EPD) is an annotated non-redundant collection of eukaryotic POL II promoters, for which the transcription start site has been determined experimentally. Access to promoter sequences is provided by pointers to positions in nucleotide sequence entries. The annotation part of an entry includes description of the initiation site mapping data, cross-references to other databases, and bibliographic references. EPD is structured in a way that facilitates dynamic extraction of biologically meaningful promoter subsets for comparative sequence analysis. Recent efforts have focused on exhaustive cross-referencing to the EMBL nucleotide sequence database, and on the improvement of the WWW-based user interfaces and data retrieval mechanisms. EPD can be accessed at http://www.epd.isb-sib.ch

EPD in its twentieth year: towards complete promoter coverage of selected model organisms.

The Eukaryotic Promoter Database (EPD) is an annotated non-redundant collection of eukaryotic POL II promoters, experimentally defined by a transcription start site (TSS). Access to promoter sequences is provided by pointers to positions in the corresponding genomes. Promoter evidence comes from conventional TSS mapping experiments for individual genes, or, starting from release 73, from mass genome annotation projects. Subsets of promoter sequences with customized 5' and 3' extensions can be downloaded from the EPD website. The focus of current development efforts is to reach complete promoter coverage for important model organisms as soon as possible. To speed up this process, a new class of preliminary promoter entries has been introduced as of release 83, which requires less stringent admission criteria. As part of a continuous integration process, new web-based interfaces have been developed, which allow joint analysis of promoter sequences with other bioinformatics resources developed by our group, in particular programs offered by the Signal Search Analysis Server, and gene expression data stored in the CleanEx database. EPD can be accessed at http://www.epd.isb-sib.ch.

Cosmic radiation protection dosimetry using an Electronic personal Dosemeter (Siemens EPD) on selected international flights.

The effectiveness of an Electronic Personal Dosemeter (Siemens EPD) for cosmic-radiation dosimetry at aviation altitudes was examined on eight international flights between March and September, 1998. The EPD values (Hepd) of the dose equivalent from penetrating radiation, Hp(10), were assumed to be almost the same as the electron absorbed doses during those flights. Based on the compositions of cosmic radiation in the atmosphere and the 1977 ICRP recommendation, an empirical equation to conservatively estimate the personal dose equivalent (Hp77) at a depth of 5 cm was derived as Hp77 = 3.1 x Hepd. The personal dose equivalent (Hp90) based on the 1990 ICRP recommendation was given by Hp90 = 4.6 x Hepd; the conservative feature of Hp90 was confirmed in a comparison with the calculated effective doses by means of the CARI-6 code. It is thus expected that the EPD will be effectively used for radiation protection dosimetry on selected international flights.

High EPDS scores in women from ethnic minorities living in London.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to determine whether women from ethnic minorities and/or birth in a non-English speaking country were at increased risk for postnatal depression. METHOD: The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) was used to screen a sample of 830 primiparous women 4 weeks after delivery. Ethnicity data was available on 743, and from these, 530 responses were received (71.3%). RESULTS: Two independent variables were found to be significantly associated with high EPDS scores. These were being non White (especially Asian; adjusted Odds Ratio 2.7, 95% CI 1.3-5.8) and being born in a non-English speaking country (Odds Ratio 1.9; 95% CI 1.0-3.5). LIMITATIONS: The study was conducted using self rating questionnaires. There was only a 71% response overall, and a 50% response rate among the ethnic minority group. CONCLUSIONS: Women from ethnic minorities or from a non-English speaking background should be regarded at high risk group for postnatal depression.

Cohort study of depressive moods in Thai women during late pregnancy and 6-8 weeks of postpartum using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS).

OBJECTIVE: To identify depressive moods as measured by the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale in late pregnancy and postpartum, explore associated factors and assess changes in depressive moods. METHODS: A cohort study of 610 pregnant Thai women was conducted. The self-reporting EPDS was completed at 36-40 weeks and at 6-8 weeks postpartum. RESULT: The prevalence of depressive moods (scores of 10 or more on the EPDS) was 20.5% during pregnancy and 16.8% at postpartum. Factors related to depressive moods in late pregnancy included marital status, evidence of irritable moods before menstruation, and attitudes towards this pregnancy. Unmarried women, women having irritable moods before menstruation or women having negative attitudes towards this pregnancy had double risk. Related factors during the postpartum period included religion, evidence of irritable moods before menstruation, perception of pregnancy complications and attitudes towards this pregnancy (p < 0.01). Women who perceived of having complications during this pregnancy, those who had irritable moods before menstruation or had negative attitudes towards this pregnancy had also double risk. The depressive moods were significantly reduced postnatally. CONCLUSION: One-fifth of pregnant and postpartum women experienced depressive moods but the severity declined at postpartum.

Validation of the Punjabi version of the Edinburgh postnatal depression scale (EPDS).

This study reports a project to validate a Punjabi translation of the Edinburgh postnatal depression scale (EPDS). The study involved three points of data collection. Bilingual (Punjabi and English speaking) new mothers completed the English and Punjabi EPDS on two separate occasions and underwent a diagnostic interview. At a threshold of 12.5 the Punjabi scale yielded a sensitivity of 71.4 and specificity of 93.7. Analysis suggests criterion and conceptual equivalence between the two scales. A users' evaluation indicates that the tool was acceptable to the majority of mothers, however, the scale may be more applicable for mothers for whom Punjabi is their first language.

A novel method for preparing and characterizing alcoholic EPD suspensions.

Ceramic suspensions composed of alumina and mixtures of alumina and zirconia powders in ethyl alcohol were prepared. A solution of citric acid and triethylamine was used as dispersant. The citric acid, which usually is used as dispersant in water alumina suspensions, gave excellent results in ethyl alcohol also if it was used in conjunction with triethylamine. A novel method consisting of combined measurements of grain size, zeta potential, and transmittance was optimized to study the dispersion and stability properties of the ceramic suspensions; by using this method the optimal dispersant amount was determined. The suspensions based on alumina and alumina-zirconia powders were used to coat stainless steel plates by electrophoretic deposition (EPD); the optimal composition of suspensions and the used EPD parameters made it possible to obtain coatings with uniform thickness and composition.

Risk factors of postpartum depression and EPDS scores in a group of Nigerian women.

A sample of 252 women was studied for postpartum depression (PPD) in a 68-bed maternity hospital in Lagos, Nigeria. After obtaining consent, they were assessed using: (1) a questionnaire on socio-demographic profile and risk factors of PPD; (2) the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), and when necessary with (3) the depressive module of International Classification of Diseases, 10th edition (ICD-10). The cohort was predominantly young (mean age 28.5 +/- 5.26 years). About one-quarter (23%) scored > or =12, (the cut-off score) on EPDS assessment; with majority of these depressed on further evaluation with ICD-10. The risk factors for PPD were found to be mainly psychosocial, including unwanted pregnancy, unemployment and marital conflict. It is concluded that PPD is a major complication of childbirth in Nigeria, which can be minimized by improving both the citizens' socioeconomic condition and providing cheaper and more efficient health-care services.

The European practice database (EPD): results of the study in thte North-East of Italy.

The survey, realized in 2002-03 in the North-East of Italy, describes renal care in dialysis services. A questionnaire, structured at European level, was sent to all dialysis centres by mail. The questionnaire was returned from 21 centres (61.8%) and related satellite units. Results show nonhomogeneity in renal care. Some important results were: low use of peritoneal dialysis (18%), compared to the rest of Europe, elevated presence of older people on haemodialysis, reduced percentage of patients on transplantation waiting list, diffused use of isolation for HCV positive patients, high use of AV fistulae (84%), low employment of renal technicians, absence of renal dieticians and social workers and nurses performing prevalently direct care. Data can be used for different goals: benchmarking activities, selection of deeper research topics and development of more oriented continuous education activities.
