Incorporation of a cast, embossed identification plate into a partial denture framework.

This article presents a technique for the fabrication and incorporation of a stable and fireproof identification plate into a cast partial denture framework. Embossing tape is embedded in the wax pattern of the major connector. The resulting casting reproduces the embossed lettering, which is identifiable through the tissue-colored acrylic denture base resin.

Developing a schedule of normative denture treatment need.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study is to assess the reliability and validity of a schedule to determine the normative denture treatment needs of older people. DESIGN: The design used assessed inter-examiner reliability (criterion validity), test-retest reliability, and content and face validity of the schedule. SETTING: The inter-examiner reliability study took place in a Department of Prosthetic Dentistry, the remainder of the work took place in a community setting. RESULTS: The results showed that the schedule in terms of an index performed well with reasonable inter-examiner and test-retest reliability. Difficulties however were encountered with regard to subjective judgements about denture quality and design; consequently, there was modest inter-examiner agreement for stability, retention, and occlusal balance. CONCLUSIONS: The findings from this preliminary work suggest that the schedule may be useful in the assessment of normative denture treatment need in a community setting. Nevertheless more work will be required to obtain further information on the validity of this new assessment measure.

A multidisciplinary approach to prosthetic management.

This study describes a multidisciplinary team approach to prosthetic management for inpatients. A Communication Management System summary sheet was developed to list all prosthetic devices owned and basic information concerning any existing communication problems. The summary sheet is to be posted in a wooden frame above the patients bed. A member of the nursing staff would be responsible for completing the pertinent data.

Attitudes to identification of dentures: the patients' perspective.

The importance of placing identification marks on dentures has long been acknowledged by the dental profession. More recently, following the fatalities at the Bradford City, England, football club fire, the need for marking dentures has been made more public. This paper outlines the different types of marking systems available and describes a survey on denture wearers to investigate their attitude toward the placement of identification marks on dentures. Results show that few dentures are marked at manufacture but that wearers are in favor of having their name on their denture. Of the 63 subjects sampled, 93.5% did not know that identification marks could be placed on dentures. The profession must be encouraged to routinely label all dentures at manufacture.

[The importance of denture identification].

It seems useful to recommend or to require by law also in The Netherlands the inclusion of identification markings on all dentures. Provision of this service by Public and Private Health Insurance can contribute to a uniform and common adjustment.
