Much of the debate about the costs and benefits of "three-strikes" laws for repeat felony offenders is implicitly demographic, relying on unexamined assumptions about prison population dynamics. However, even state-of-the-art analysis has omitted important demographic details. We construct a multistate life-table model of population flows to and from prisons, incorporating age-specific transition rates estimated from administrative data from Florida. We use the multistate life-table model to investigate patterns of prison population growth and aging under many variants of three-strikes laws. Our analysis allows us to quantify these demographic changes and suggests that the aging of prison populations under three-strikes policies will significantly undermine their long-run effectiveness.
"This paper suggests the use of the Matusita affinity and distance measures for the relative ranking of human populations and for developing an age distribution free index of demographic phenomena. A plea for modifying the conventional parity progression rates through semi-Markov analysis is made. The input-output model, the notion of entropy, etc., are suggested as new tools for looking at demographic events." Some illustrations based on Canadian and U.S. data concerning family planning attitudes, mortality, migration, and stable populations are included.
Genetic-demographic parameters (Tundra Nentsi, Forest Nentsi, and Komi) of the population of native inhabitants of the Samburg Tundra (population size, age and sex structure, sex ratio) are presented. The size of the portion of the population of reproductive age (35.5% of the total), family size (3.04), and the predominance of the portion of the population under reproductive allow us to classify this population as growing. Results of analysis of marriage structure, mixing, and migration processes in the group of Tundra Nentsi are presented. It is shown, that the gene contribution of Tundra Nentsi themselves into the population is 74%. The index of endogamy is 42.4%. The inbreeding coefficient in the population is 0.003. It is demonstrated that the average number and variance of births for Tundra Nentsi women who have passed their reproductive years are 7.55 and 11.07, respectively. Crow's index of total selection (Itot) and its components (Im, I(f)) were 0.75, 0.47, and 0.19, respectively.
The author "describes the demographic aspects of the ageing process of Japan and its implications in the fields of economic support of the aged population and of family structure." Possible solutions to the socioeconomic problems of an aging population are considered. (summary in ENG)

AIM: This retrospective report analyzed the demographic features of kidney transplant outpatients grafted in Turkey and in different regions of the world. METHODS: The patients were divided into 4 groups: Every cohort was subgrouped as either receiving a cadaveric (CT) or a live donor transplant (LT) performed in our institute (ICT, n = 147, ILT, n = 304), other institutions in Turkey (TCT, n = 16, TLT, n = 86), or in a foreign country (FCT, n = 66, FLT, n = 154). RESULTS: Among the patients with functional grafts, FLT transplantations, of which the vast majority were paid transplantations, constituted the second largest group (n = 105) following ILT (n = 214). In the ILT group, 5- and 10-year graft survival rates were 76% and 50%, respectively, and patient survival rates were 88% and 78%, respectively. Considering the FLT group, 5- and 10-year graft survival figures were 70% and 42%, respectively, while patient survival rates in these periods were 81% and 69%, respectively. Patients with paid donor transplantations were characterized by a high risk of unconventional infectious complications in the early period, while midterm patient and graft survival was somewhat better than expected considering the high rate of complications in the early period. CONCLUSIONS: Paid organ transplantation should be discouraged. Organ donation should be stimulated by every means to avoid potentially fatal unconventional infections after transplantation from paid donors. If patients receive a paid transplant, however, they should be closely followed for these complications, since, if they survive the early period the midterm and long-term outcomes are quite reasonable.
From previously published demographic data of the age distributions and reproductive rates of the pale, intermediate and dark phenotypes of the Arctic Skua, revised estimates are obtained of the intrinsic rates of increase and selective coefficients of the phenotypes in each sex. Two significant components of selection are variation in age of maturity and variation in reproductive success. Sexual selection is a component of the variation in reproductive success. Dark and intermediate birds have a greater reproductive success than pales, partly as a result of their advantage in sexual selection. Pale birds have an overall advantage, however, because they are younger when they first breed. Given the estimated selective coefficients, a computer model predicts that pale birds will gradually replace the others. So far there are not enough data collected over a sufficiently long time to test the model rigorously.
DESIGN: The influence of demographic factors upon antimicrobial resistance among 3362 isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae from 25 countries was investigated, using univariate comparison and multivariate logistic regression. RESULTS: Eleven countries had significantly higher rates (Odds ratios [OR]: 2.50-64.79) of penicillin and/or erythromycin resistance than the UK. After taking country effects into account, rates of penicillin resistance (OR 1.98) and erythromycin resistance (OR 1.89) were significantly higher among infants than adults. Fewer (OR 0.69) erythromycin-resistant isolates were collected from male than female patients. There was no difference in the incidence of penicillin or erythromycin resistance among inpatients or outpatients. Penicillin resistance was more prevalent among ear swabs than blood cultures (OR 2.07). Erm(B), the predominant macrolide resistance mechanism across all age groups, was particularly prevalent among bronchoalveolar lavage (69.1%) and sinus (68.8%) isolates. Isolates possessing both erm(B) and mef(A) were generally collected from South Korea and were most common among infants and children (10.3%) and ear samples (17.3%). Telithromycin susceptibility was >99.5%, irrespective of demography. CONCLUSIONS: Although demography had a significant impact on antimicrobial resistance of pneumococci, telithromycin remained highly active across all demographic groups.
In a recent study of 714 graves of the Early Bronze Age cemetery, Franzhausen I, 658 individuals were demographically analysed. The masculinity rate and the mortality rate in the age groups were of similar order compared with estimates derived from other series of this period. On the base of a stationary population model, life tables were calculated showing life expectancy at birth to be 25.8 years and at the age of 20, 17.7 years. Also computed were: the crude death rate (Z = 38.8); and the population size (P = 31 or 65). The lack of infants were estimated by regressions (5q0 = 58%) and the results are discussed.
OBJECTIVE: To compare, using method type and application time, the demographic characteristics of women using hormonal contraceptive methods administered after abortion or during the interval period with those of intrauterine device (IUD) users. METHODS: The demographic characteristics of women to whom oral contraception (OC), monthly injection, depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA), or IUD were administered in the post-abortive and interval periods between January 1998 and September 2001 in our clinic, were evaluated with the help of a registration system based on the Microsoft Access software used in our clinic. Demographic characteristics recorded were: age, reproductive expectation, previous contraceptive method, education level, number of live children, number of induced and spontaneous abortuses. RESULTS: A total of 10 500 women were included in the study. Of these, 6601 women had taken a contraceptive method during the interval period, and 3899 women had taken a contraceptive method post-abortion. Only 4.6% of the cases were younger than 20 years, 48.3% were between 21 and 30 years, 37.2% were between 31 and 40 years and 9.9% were 41 years old or over. The DMPA-administered group contained the highest number of women > or = 41 years when compared to other groups (22.8%). In reproductive expectations, 65.8% of the cases wanted no more children; 1.3% wanted to have a baby within a 2-year period whereas 23.7% wanted a child after 2 years. The proportion of women wanting no more children was greatest in the DMPA-administered group (77.3%). No previous use of contraceptive methods was reported by 20.7% of women; 27% were using coitus interruptus. The education level of the women was as follows: 10% had no education, 58.3% had education to primary school level, 23.2% to secondary-high-school level and 2.1% to university level. The group of women who chose OC as their contraceptive method contained the highest proportion of university graduates (6.5%). Only 6.26% of the women had no children. The proportion of women in the DMPA-use group with three or more children was higher compared to that in other groups (33.2%). CONCLUSION: The evaluation of demographic characteristics plays an important role in counseling, and in the efficacy and continued use of contraceptive methods.
BACKGROUND: This study was carried out to analyze the proportion of T cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (TALL) among all acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in Pakistani population and its correlation with the demographic features. Accuracy of cell surface markers used in flow cytometric analysis of the leukemic cells was also determined. METHODS: Data of 209 consecutive cases of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) presenting between July 1995 and July 2003 was analyzed. Flow cytometry was performed on all ALL cases using the standard protocols. TALL markers included CD3, CD5 and CD7. RESULTS: Proportion of TALL among known ALL Pakistani patients was 17.22%. Mean age of the TALL patients was 17.2 years. Proportion of TALL was higher in adults than in children (21.95% vs. 14.17%). Overall in this study there were more male patients affected by TALL (25/36 or 69.40%) than females (11/36 or 30.60%). The female to male ratio among TALL patients was 1:2.27. However, the proportion (%) of TALL in females was higher than males (18.96% vs. 15.82 %) i, e, 1.2:1. CD7 was found to be the most sensitive among both adults & children. It was positive in 94.4% of the TALL cases. CONCLUSION: Proportion of TALL among ALL in Pakistan is similar to that reported in this region, indicating a candidate association with geographical location and socioeconomic status. The reactivity of markers with TALL. cells was similar to what we expected based upon literature. However, due to some aberrant and cross reactivity displayed by each marker, we strongly recommend a panel approach including B and myeloid markers to ensure a correct diagnosis of TALL.

Previous analysis of cribra orbitalia in the medieval populations of Kulubnarti focused only on the presence or absence of the lesion relative to age, sex, and cultural period. Demographic consideration of the lesion was limited to a gross comparison of lesion frequencies and probabilities of dying by age group. The scope of the earlier work has been expanded in the present research to include the consideration of cribra orbitalia from a developmental, demographic, and diachronic perspective. The sample consisted of the same 334 crania analyzed by Van Gerven et al. ([1981] J. Hum. Evol. 10:395-408). All skulls showing the lesion were dichotomized as active or healing, and separate life tables were constructed for those with lesions and those without. The results demonstrate that active lesions are confined entirely to infancy and childhood with formation beginning as early as six months and ending by the twelfth year. This childhood pattern is consistent with the iron deficiency anemia hypothesis proposed by Carlson et al. ([1974] J. Hum. Evol. 3:405-410). Among young adults (16-40), healing lesions occur more frequently in males than females. In the older age categories, however, females exhibit a higher frequency of partially healed lesions than males. A life table comparison of those with and those without cribra orbitalia reveals a dramatic reduction in mean life expectancy for those with the lesion across the formative childhood years (birth-16). This reduction peaks at age 5 where 78% of the children exhibit lesions and where they, as a group, have a mean life expectancy 15.5 years below those without the lesion.

This paper presents information about hearing-impaired children under the age of 6 who are receiving special educational services in the United States and have been reported to the Annual Survey of Hearing-Impaired Children and Youth conducted by Gallaudet University's Center for Assessment and Demographic Studies. Results indicate an increase in the number of hearing-impaired children under age 6 reported to the survey over the last 10 years, especially children from minority backgrounds. The second section of the analysis focuses on students from schools participating in a model state project that encourages early identification and provision of services to hearing-impaired students and their families. The data pertain only to those children who are receiving services through established programs reporting to the Annual Survey; thus, inferences about the overall prevalence of hearing impairment among this age group should not be drawn.
A theory has recently been advanced which proposes that the development autobiographical recollection is shaped by a child's participation in discussions of events with adults (e.g. Nelson, 1988; Snow, 1990). A logical prediction of the theory is that demographic factors related to the nature of linguistic environments might be associated with differences in the development of autobiographical recollection. Four questionnaire studies that test this prediction are presented. The results, on a total of 768 subjects, show that the age of earliest memory increases across birth order, is slightly earlier for females than for males, and is earlier for Caucasians than for Asians. These findings are discussed in light of previous research showing that parents interact and talk more with first-borns and with girls, and in light of differences between Western and Asian cultures in socialization goals and the significance of autobiography in the development of self-concept.
