Conservatism of Israeli junior high school students: interethnic differences.

The aims of the study were (a) to establish the factor structure characterizing Israeli junior high school students of Western and Oriental ethnic origin on the Children's Scale of Social Attitudes, (b) to compare the Israeli factor structure with those for school children from other societies, and (c) to examine whether the Israeli school children's factor structure resembled those for Israeli adults as well as for adults from other societies. Analysis indicated that Israeli junior high school children from both Western and Oriental ethnic groups were characterized by similar factors of general conservatism, namely, Religion, Antihedonism, and Punitiveness, although the Orientals were more conservative on these factors than the Westerners. In addition, the present factor structure resembled those for groups of school children as well as adults from other societies, reconfirming that factors of general conservatism have cross-cultural validity.

Path analysis of parents' conservatism toward sex education of their mentally retarded children.

The authors investigated three probable reasons why parents of mentally retarded children would be opposed to sex education being offered as a school subject: general sexual attitudes, specific sexual attitudes, and prejudices against the retarded child's own sexuality. A questionnnaire was given to 60 parents of retarded children and 62 parents of nonretarded children. A correlation analysis revealed evidence of all three kinds of reasons and led to a causal model of conservatism on sex education. A path analysis revealed that (a) sexual prejudices are a major obstacle to sex education, and (b) each group of parents represents a specific dynamic of conservatism on sex education. Means of pedagogical intervention to modify parents' attitudes toward sex education of handicapped children were discussed.

Conservatism in pesticide exposure assessment.

Three important factors are commonly encountered in exposure assessment that when combined could overestimate the exposure to pesticides by as much as two orders of magnitude. The three factors discussed are dermal absorption from laboratory animal studies, daily dose extrapolated from partial day monitoring, and nonbolus dose from dermal or inhalation exposure. Conservatism built into the process by each of these three factors is substantiated with available empirical data. The dose overestimation from these factors varies discriminatively by exposure scenarios and peculiarities of a given chemical. It is for this reason that a generic overestimation factor cannot be ascribed. Following the empirical illustrations, the authors conclude that the most effective approach for dealing with the problem is to generate the most appropriate data possible. This means producing human rather than laboratory animal dermal absorption data, conducting full-day exposure monitoring studies, and whenever feasible generating dermal rather than oral toxicology data (or alternatively data on both oral and dermal pharmacokinetics) in those cases where the dermal route predominates.

Conservatism of the H-Y/H-W receptor.

Soluble H-Y antigen is taken up by cells of the homogametic gonad of cattle, dog, chicken and South African clawed frog. After in vitro exposure to mouse testis supernatant or male fetal calf serum, XX ovary cells or ZZ testis cells, which are normally H-Y-, acquire the H-Y+ (H-W+) phenotype and absorb mouse H-Y antibody in standard serological assays. In addition, H-Y antigens of the different species can compete for attachment to target cells of a single species. In a new competitive binding radioassay, uptake of tritiated human H-Y is blocked in XX bovine fetal ovarian cells exposed to non-labeled H-Y of mouse or fetal bull. Because of H-Y antigens of the different species are cross-reactive serologically, positive reaction of H-Y from one species with gonadal cells of another signifies structural conservatism of the H-Y/H-W gonadal "receptor". It follows that establishment of the H-Y/H-W-receptor complex is a common and critical early event in primary sex differentiation of the vertebrates, directing the initially indifferent embryonic gonad towards the heterogametic mode, which may be testicular or ovarian, depending on the species.

Selective conservatism in trauma management: a South African contribution.

Trauma in South Africa has been termed the malignant epidemic. This heritage was the result of a violent colonial legacy which spawned the apartheid system of injustice and the struggle against it The Apartheid regime created overcrowding, unemployment, social stagnation, and the disruption of normal family life. These were the catalysts for the incredible amount of criminal and interpersonal conflict in South Africa over the last 50 years. African townships such as Soweto in Johannesburg and Umlazi in Durban were crime-ridden ghettoes where the apartheid police were more interested in fueling the "black on black" violence rather than trying to curb it. Baragwanath (Chris Hani-Baragwanath) and King Edward the VIII Hospital in Durban were the "trauma care epicenters" on the fringes of these huge urban conurbations. Both were designated black hospitals and both were underfunded and dilapidated. Even the architecture was similar, with prefabricated, poorly ventilated structures serving as wards and clinics in both institutions. Trauma volumes consisted of between 10 and 20 laparotomies on weekend nights at the height of political unrest. This led to vast individual experience in several areas of trauma typified by Demetriades' experience with 70 penetrating cardiac injuries. In this setting of limited resources and an overwhelming volume of trauma, selective conservatism as a surgical philosophy took root and has profoundly influenced the way the world manages trauma. We detail and illustrate the evolution of this approach and its continued application.

Age changes in the causes of individual differences in conservatism.

Age-related changes are analyzed in the correlation of 3416 monozygotic and 3780 dizygotic U.S. twin pairs aged between 9 and 75+ years for conservatism scores derived from a 28-item social attitude inventory. The effects of the shared environment are overwhelming in twins aged 20 years or younger. In older twins, genetic effects appear to play a larger role. A more dynamic conception of the interaction between genes and environment in the development of complex human differences is needed.

Dutch hospital drug formularies: pharmacotherapeutic variation and conservatism, but concurrence with national pharmacotherapeutic guidelines.

AIMS: This research examines current hospital drug formularies (HDFs) of all Dutch general hospitals. It assesses the extent to which they recommend the same drugs, the breadth of their coverage in terms of therapeutic areas, drug groups incorporated and individuals drugs included, and their extent of conservatism by considering the year of introduction of the drugs included within groups. Furthermore, it considers the extent to which their recommendations concur and comply with those of national pharmacotherapeutic guidelines and the WHO Essential Drugs List (EDL). METHODS: Seventy-eight (81%) out of all 96 current Dutch HDFs were received of which 62 were suitable for study. Differences between HDFs and eventual associations with hospital characteristics were researched by statistical testing and case-control studies. To evaluate HDFs' concurrence with national guidelines and compliance with the WHO EDL, nine drug groups were studied in detail: benzodiazepines, calcium channel blockers, beta-adrenoceptor blocking agents, ACE-inhibitors, angiotensin-II inhibitors, NSAIDs, H2-receptor antagonists, 5HT3-antagonists, and H+-pump inhibitors. Concurrence and compliance with national guidelines and the WHO EDL was defined as inclusion of recommended drugs. Non-concurrence was defined as inclusion of nonrecommended drugs. RESULTS: The total number of indications addressed and drug groups incorporated within HDFs varied from 28 to 72 (median 56) and from 30 to 123 (median 97), respectively. The total number of individual drug entities (pharmacological substances) included ranged from 239 to 658 (median 430) and the total number of drug products, including all different dosage forms, from 412 to 1121 (median 655). Within drug groups, drug entities first marketed were most frequently included. Teaching hospitals were most likely to include recently marketed drugs. Depending on the drug group, HDFs' concurrence and compliance with national guidelines and the WHO EDL ranged from 35% to 100%. CONCLUSIONS: Findings indicate that Dutch HDFs are rather uniform in the indications addressed and the drug groups incorporated. However, the number of individual drug entities and drug products included within groups varies considerably. Furthermore, Dutch HDFs are considered rather conservative, as older drugs are favoured over more recent drugs. Generally, with some drug exceptions, Dutch HDFs concur and comply with recommendations in national pharmacotherapeutic guidelines and with the WHO EDL over 90%.

Social traditionalism and economic conservatism: two conservative political ideologies in the United States.

The authors surveyed by telephone a random sample of voters in the 1996 presidential election from the Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area of Muncie, IN ("Middletown"; R. Lynd & H. Lynd, 1929) to test a model describing the nature of 2 conservative political ideologies--social traditionalism and economic conservatism. The model, based on functions of attitudes theory, predicted (a) that the 2 political ideologies would appeal to 2 rather distinct constituency groups--the former, to conservative Protestants; the latter, to people of higher incomes--and (b) that social traditionalists would be more dogmatic and economic conservatives would be more open-minded in their respective views. The findings were consistent with those predictions.

Is Christian religious conservatism compatible with the liberal social welfare state?

This article examines the rise of Christian religious conservatism and explores whether the theological views of the conservative Christian movement are compatible with the liberal social welfare state. The authors conclude that the driving force behind social change should remain with the state, even though faith-based initiatives can provide some basic supports that the social welfare state can use.

Special educational ideology and political-economic conservatism.

In the United States, the educational and human service systems, in addition to the attitudes and behaviors of the professionals associated with these systems, are being shaped to a lesser or greater extent by the Scandinavian ideology termed normalization. This paper examines such a belief system through a special education ideology scale developed by the author and administered to school committee members and superintendents in 16 communities in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The scale discriminates between varying ideological patterns of educational decision-makers as they pertain to the educational needs of handicapped children. Further, the scale is correlated with another tested belief system measuring political-economic conservatism. Analysis of the data revealed that special educational ideology varied significantly with political-economic orientations. According to community type--urban, small city, suburban, rural--the decision-makers varied significantly on their political-economic orientations. There were also noticeable differences in the extent to which special education policy was implemented. The greatest difficulty in placing children in the least restrictive environments was evident in the urban communities. While the findings are inconclusive, the data does suggest that a more progressive ideology, coupled with the strong relationship between education and politics, could contribute toward enhancing the effective implementation of special education and similar human service policies. The author recommends several possible options available to educational decision-makers at the community level which might improve upon the nature and extent of special education services and programs.

Selective conservatism in penetrating abdominal wounds: a continuing reappraisal.

Our experience with 829 patients with penetrating abdominal trauma treated in an Adult Trauma Service over 8 1/2 years managed by "selective conservatism" is reviewed, and 207 additional patients with blunt abdominal trauma handled in the same fashion were also studied. This pattern of management prompted exploratory celiotomy in only 29% of stab wounds and 54% of gunshot wounds. Overall mortality for penetrating abdominal wounds, including patients moribund on admission, was 2.5%. Overall mortality was 19.3% for blunt abdominal trauma. There were no deaths or errors in management in those patients definitively selected for nonoperative management. The philosophy of using specific objective indications for abdominal exploration in both penetrating and blunt abdominal trauma, especially when bolstered by routine abdominal paracentesis and lavage, is safe and reliable, and is adaptable to all clinical facilities.

Ovarian conservatism.

Everyone is conscious of the prime role of the ovaries in making a female a "female." However, too little attention has been directed toward the systemic mechanism of estrogens that protects against coronary artery disease and osteoporosis. Exogenous estrogen appears to be almost as effective as the ovaries are in protecting a female from these diseases. The incidence of neoplasia in preserved ovaries after previous pelvic surgery is low. Emphasis has been placed on ovarian conservatism in the young female because a clearer benefit can be demonstrated in them than in postmenopausal females.

Phylogeny, concerted convergence, and phylogenetic niche conservatism in the core Liliales: insights from rbcL and ndhF sequence data.

Calochortus and the family Liliaceae s.s. have often been considered each other's closest relatives, based partly on their shared possession of bulbs, visually showy flowers, winged wind-dispersed seeds, and narrow parallel-veined leaves. We present a well-supported molecular phylogeny for these groups and their close relatives in the core Liliales, based on sequence variation in the chloroplast-encoded rbcL and ndhF genes. This analysis identifies Liliaceae s.s. as monophyletic. including one clade (((Lilium, Fritillaris, Nomocharis), Cardiocrinum), Notholirion) that appears to have diversified in the Himalayas roughly 12 million years ago and another ((Erythronium, Tulipa), (Gagea, Lloydia)) that arose in East Asia at about the same time. Medeola and Clintonia are sister to Liliaceae s.s. and bear rhizomes, inconspicuous flowers, fleshy animal-dispersed fruits, and broad reticulate-veined leaves. Calochortus is sister to Tricyrtis; both Tricyrtis and the neighboring clade of Prosartes-Streptopus-Scoliopus share several of the traits seen in Medeola-Clintonia. The core Liliales thus provide compelling examples of both concerted convergence and phylogenetic niche conservatism. Invasion of open, seasonal habitats was accompanied by the independent evolution of bulbs, showy flowers, wind-dispersed seeds, and narrow parallel-veined leaves in Calochortus and Liliaceae s.s. Conversely, persistence in shady habitats was accompanied by the retention of rhizomes, inconspicuous flowers, animal-dispersed seeds, and broad reticulate-veined leaves in their sister groups. We advance arguments for the context-specific adaptive value of each of these traits, as well as evidence of parallel trends in other groups. Concerted convergence--convergence in several different traits, favored by the same shared set of ecological conditions, in two or more lineages--is an important evolutionary process that can mislead evolutionary analyses based solely on phenotypic variation.

A phylogenetic study of pollinator conservatism among sexually deceptive orchids.

Orchids of the genus Chiloglottis are pollinated through the sexual deception of male wasps mainly from the genus Neozeleboria (Tiphiidae: Thynninae). The orchids mimic both the appearance and sex pheromones of wingless female thynnines but provide no reward to the deceived males. Despite the asymmetry of this interaction, strong pollinator specificity is typical. Such plant-pollinator interactions would seem to be relatively flexible in the plant's adaptive response to variation in the local pollinator resource. However, we present DNA sequence data on both orchids and wasps that demonstrate a pattern of pollinator conservatism operating at a range of taxonomic levels. Sequence data from the wasps indicate 15 of 16 Chiloglottis pollinators are closely related members of one clade of Thynninae. A pattern of congruence between orchid and wasp phylogenies is also demonstrated below the generic level, such that related orchids tend to use related thynnine wasps as specific pollinators. Comparative physiological data on the wasp responses to the floral scents of two Chiloglottis species and one outgroup, Arthrochilus, indicate similar attractive volatile chemicals are used by related orchid taxa. By extension, we infer a similarity of sex pheromone signals among related thynnines. Thus, the conservative pattern of pollinator change in sexually deceptive orchids may reflect phylogenetic patterns in the sex pheromones of their pollinators.

Birth control practices and conservatism.

This study examined the relationship of conservatism to reports of contraceptive usage, reasons for nonusage of a particular birth control method, and knowledge of birth control information. The never married high conservative subjects who were sexually experienced revealed that they had (a) a lower frequency of usage as well as a lower variety of contraceptive methods; (b) endorsed the beliefs that it was morally wrong and that it was unnatural to use a given birth control method significantly more often as reasons for not using contraceptive techniques; and (c) less knowledge of birth control methods than did low conservative subjects who were sexually experienced. Results were interpreted to support the notion that the fear of loss of control of one's impulses and hence the basis for conservative attitudes are determinants of contraceptive usage.

Remarks on the conservatism of sigma(0 -- E)2/E in survival data.

This note presents theoretical and numerical calculations which investigate the adequacy of the sigma(0 -- E)2/E approximation (Peto and Pike [1973]) when applying the Mantel/Haenszel summary chisquare statistic to the comparison of r life tables in the manner suggested by Mantel [1966], Peto and Peto [1972], and Cox [1972]. These indicate that conservatism is mild unless there are marked differences in the withdrawal patterns in the r tables. Such differences may, however, be anticipated in the case of a generalization of the life table procedure suggested by Crowley [1973], Mantel and Byar [1974], and Turnbull, Brown, and Hu [1974], wherein individuals are moved from one life table to another according to changes in their treatment (or other) statuses.

Neo-isolationism, balanced-budget conservatism, and the fiscal impacts of immigrants.

"A rise in neo-isolationism in the United States has given encouragement to a new fiscal politics of immigration. Growing anti-immigrant sentiment has coalesced with forces of fiscal conservatism to make immigrants an easy target of budget cuts. Limits on legal alien access to social welfare programs that are contained in the 1996 welfare and immigration reform acts seem motivated not so much by a guiding philosophy of what it means to be a member of American society as by a desire to shrink the size of the federal government and to produce a balanced budget. Even more than in the past, the consequence of a shrinking welfare state is to metamorphose legal immigrants from public charges to windfall gains for the federal treasury."

A fear of trying: dysfunctional conservatism.

As the American Psychoanalytic Association faces mounting external pressures that threaten its very survival, its leadership and members appear increasingly preoccupied with issues of internal governance and training standards. This inward gazing, though in keeping with analysts' personality and occupational traits, serves to obscure and defend against the anxieties associated with threats from the surround. Such maladaptive defensive activity contributes to organizational stagnation, dysfunctional conservatism, and a "fear of trying." Suggestions to combat this self-defeating behavior are offered.
