Comparison of the hearing threshold measured by pure-tone audiometry and by Békésy sweep audiometry.

The hearing thresholds of 115 subjects, workers in a shipyard, were determined both by Békésy sweep audiometry and by conventional individual pure-tone audiometry at fixed audiometric frequencies. The Békésy method gave the lowest values for the hearing thresholds. It has been possible to find a useful linear relation between pure-tone and Békésy hearing thresholds. With the help of a retest experiment it has been established that the standard deviations of hearing thresholds, obtained under similar conditions in a pure-tone investigation, are about twice as large as those obtained in a Békésy investigation.

Evaluation of a behavioral audiometry simulator for teaching visual reinforcement audiometry.

Eight audiology students with little or no visual reinforcement audiometry (VRA) experience each performed a VRA test on an infant. Four of the students received approximately 5 hours of behavioral audiometry simulator (BAS) training, and 1 week later, after the first VRA test, all eight students tested a second infant. Student performance was rated by three audiologists who were experienced in performing VRA with infants. The performance of the group that received BAS training improved significantly while the performance of the control group did not. Among the students who received BAS training, those who improved the most during stimulated testing also showed the greatest improvement in VRA with real infants.

A comparison of speech audiometry and pure tone audiometry in patients with secretory otitis media.

Speech audiometry was performed on 15 children with secretory otitis media pre- and post-operatively and the findings compared with the pre- and post-operative pure tone audiograms. The results showed that in 30 per cent of cases pre-operatively the speech audiogram suggested a significantly worse hearing ability than that suggested by the pure tone audiogram (PTA). Where a PTA gives a borderline threshold disproportionate parental concern should be taken seriously as the hearing ability may well be worse than the PTA suggests.

[Agreement between auditory threshold calculated from cortical evoked response audiometry and tone audiometry in occupational hearing loss].

In a group of 126 men the authors evaluated the auditory threshold from cortical ERA findings and comparison with their threshold sound audiometry. The mean age of the patients means = 52.5 years (min. = 25 years, max. = 69 years, s = 8.95). Noise exposure means = 16.5 years (min. = 4 years, max. = 30 years, s = 4.5). In 79.3% the men worked as miners in uranium mines, other mining occupations were represented only by small numbers. The arithmetic mean of the total percentage hearing loss (calculated according to Fowler) means = 49.7% (min. = 17%, max. = 100%, s = 15). The cumulative frequency of differences between the auditory threshold of the sound audiogram and cortical ERA: (table; see text) The cumulative frequency of differences in the total percentage hearing loss between sound audiograms and cortical ERA: differences up to +/- 5% hearing loss were recorded in 24.3% of the group, differences up to +/- 10% in 43.9%, differences up to +/- 15% in 58.9%, differences up to +/- 20% in 70.1%. In the group of 126 examined subjects we detected 12 aggravating subjects (9.5%), their mean age being by 6.7 years lower than the mean of the whole group, the mean exposure to noise is by 3.2 years shorter. The differences between the auditory threshold reported by the aggravating men and the cortical ERA are highest in verbal frequencies, on average they are per fr of 2 kHz 27.3 dB, 1 kHz 24.3 dB, 0.5 kHz 20.1 dB, 4 kHz, 10.0 dB. The differences between the total percentage auditory loss calculated from sound audiograms and cortical ERA reaches on average 41.5%.

[Evoked response audiometry in newborn infants examined earlier by fetal audiometry].

The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of acoustic stimulus on behavioural heart responses of fetuses near term (38 to 42 weeks of gestational age) and comparison assessment of FHR to Auditory Brain Stem Responses (ABR) in the same babies after their birth. The study group consisted of 30 babies with pathological pregnancies and control group of 30 neonates of physiological pregnancies. Our results indicated, that the pattern of FHR accelerations after application of acoustic stimulus was significantly altered and depended on of the kind of pregnancy. Duration and amplitude of FHR obtained in the patients with complicated pregnancy were significantly smaller in comparison to the pattern observed in normal patients (142 msec to 249 msec, and 36 to 22 as well). Comparing the results obtained in FA (Fetal Audiometry) and ABR (Auditory Brain Stem Responses) we can say, that prolonged latency between a stimulus and accelerations is also combined with the prolonged latency of consecutive waves in ABR. Shortened duration of accelerations and its decreased amplitude could respond to the diminished amplitude in ABR recordings.

Age effect in speech audiometry and in brainstem electric response audiometry.

A review of the files of 152 patients with normal hearing or slight hearing loss revealed in the older age group that (1) scores on the synthetic sentence identification task (SSI, S/N = 0 dB) have a tendency to drop in comparison with the discrimination scores for phonetically balanced words in silence (PB), and that (2) the wave V of the auditory brainstem response shows a greater latency prolongation when the stimulation rate is increased. However, no statistical correlation between these two age-linked phenomena emerged, so they seem to be the result of two independent processes.
