Experimental ancylostomiasis in chickens: effect of various dose of infective Ancylostoma caninum larvae on their migration and distribution.

White leghorn chickens, when infected with repeated doses of Ancylostoma caninum larvae, expel the larvae at a faster rate than when infected with a single dose. This suggests that the initial dose induces some resistance in the host. An initial dose of 1000 and 2000 larvae, followed by a 2nd dose of the same order, induces resistance in the alimentary tract causing the entire larval burden either to migrate to other tissues (organs) or to be expelled in 24 h.

Ancylostoma↗

Intestinal mast cells during experimental ancylostomiasis.

The alterations of mast cell counts induced in the gut of swiss albino mice by infection with Ancylostoma caninum larvae have been studied, both in single and multiple infections. It was found that mast cell rise was greater in females than males. In singly infected animals, mast cell increase was influenced by the infective dose of inoculated larvae. In case of repeatedly infected mice, mast cell counts were decreased because of their earlier degranulation.

Ancylostomiasis↗

Experimental ancylostomiasis in Swiss albino mice: adrenal and thyroid histopathology.

Remarkable hypertrophic changes were observed in the adrenal and thyroid glands of male mice after 7 to 16 days of infection with the filariform larvae of Ancylostoma caninum, but not in females. The adrenal gland revealed enormous enlargement of cells in the zonae glomerulosa, fasciculata and medulla, and also the formation of big vacuoles in the glomerular zone, whereas the thyroid gland showed distinctly hypertrophied follicular epithelium with marked acolloidal condition and follicular mass formation. These changes in the cellular diameter were highly significant (P greater than 0.001 to less than 0.005). The possible reasons for hyperactivity of these glands are discussed.

[Uveitis in ancylostomiasis].

A 42-year-old patient from Sri Lanka presented with unilateral panuveitis. The only possible cause detected was ancylostoma duodenale, a parasitosis occurring frequently on the Indian subcontinent. The link between this and uveitis, and the therapeutic consequences, are discussed.

Ovicidal effects of albendazole in human ascariasis, ancylostomiasis and trichuriasis.

Albendazole, a broad spectrum anthelmintic, was administered as a 400 mg single dose to 20 patients harbouring Ascaris (ten cases), hookworms (four cases each of Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus) and trichuriasis (ten cases). Faeces were obtained before treatment and during the following five days. Coprocultures were made for 90 days for Ascaris and Trichuris eggs, hookworm eggs were cultured by the Harada-Mori technique for at least eight days. Albendazole was ovicidal against all four genera of nematodes.
