[Ear-acupuncture and endocrine secretion].

We have investigated the possible influence of auricolar puncture over hormonal secretion. We have studied in 5 subjects the course of hormonal incretion determinable by only auricolar puncture and the second time making the same methodology united with the test of hypophyseal stimulation by "LH-RH-insulina-TRH". The results show that it is not get any changes of the plasmatic rates of hypophiseal hormones, while we have observed a decrease of the plasmatic hydrocortisone rate when it was practised the only auricolar puncture.

Ear acupuncture and psychosomatic medicine: right-left asymmetry of acupoints and lateral preferences--Part II.

A group of 50 patients with possible psychosomatic disorders was examined with five right-left preference tests: Oldfield's Handedness Inventory, and Coren and Porac's preference tests for hand, foot, eye and ear. The patients were sorted into "complete right" (consistent answers) and "incomplete right" (having answered "left" to at least one question) groups for each of these different tests. The sensitization of the left ear, particularly of the Sanjiao or Triple Heater area, is higher in the complete right than in the incomplete right group. The side to treat with Acupuncture is important for diagnosis and therapy.

[Possibilities of therapy by ear acupuncture in female sterility].

Following differentiated endocrinologic-gynecologic diagnosis auricular acupuncture was used in 15 women with oligoamenorrhea and 12 women with luteal body insufficiency who had come for hormone consultation because of sterility. In both groups the subsequent incidence of pregnancy was comparable to that achieved by drug therapy. The greatest successes were in cases of amenorrhea with positive gestagen test and normal basal hormones or hyperandrogenemia, while there was less improvement in cases with negative gestagen test, anorexia and luteal insufficiency. Even though it is time-consuming, acupuncture deserves to be more widely used, considering the lack of side effects, the low abortion rate and its positive influence on the patient's general condition.

[Comparison of the diagnostic possibilities of palpation of the abdominal cavity and ear acupuncture in diseases of the gastrointestinal tract in dogs].

The diagnostic possibilities of the use of palpation and auriculodiagnosis were compared in 89 and 78 dogs with clinical signs of gastritis acuta, gastroenteritis acuta, and gastroenteritis acuta haemorrhagica. A significant difference in the success of diagnosis in favour of auriculodiagnosis was confirmed by the statistical evaluation of the results. The best results were obtained when gastritis acuta was diagnosed: auriculodiagnosis was successful in 100% of the cases, in contrast to palpation which was successful in 33.3% of the cases. The objectivity of detection painfulness and the decrease of relative skin resistance were secured by the use of an atraumatic electrode. The results which are of primary importance in veterinary medicine agree with similar findings in human clinical acupuncture.

An experimental evaluation of auricular diagnosis: the somatotopic mapping or musculoskeletal pain at ear acupuncture points.

The present study was designed to experimentally evaluate the claims by French and Chinese acupuncturists that a somatotopic mapping of the body is represented upon the external ear. According to this system of diagnosis, areas of the auricle where there is increased electrical conductivity and heightened tenderness to touch correspond to specific areas of the body where there is some pathological condition. The hypothetical map of different bodily regions appears on the external ear as an inverted fetus, with the head represented towards the lower lobule, the hands and feet represented at the uppermost portion of the auricle, and the body in between. Forty patients were medically examined to determine areas of their body where there was musculoskeletal pain. Each patient was then draped with a sheet to conceal any visible physical problems. The physician conducting the auricular diagnosis had no prior knowledge of the patient's medical condition, but simply examined the patient's ear for areas of elevated skin conductivity or tenderness. The concordance between the established medical diagnosis and the auricular diagnoses was 75.2%. Both quantified readings of electrical current flow and subjective ratings of dermal tenderness were statistically significant in arriving at accurate diagnoses. These results thus support the hypothesis that there is a somatotopoic organization of the body represented upon the human auricle.

[Ear acupuncture has a hypotonic effect on the gastrointestinal tract].

The effect of auricular acupuncture (AAP) on the motility and tone of gastrointestinal tract was investigated in 60 patients, by comparison of the width of corpus and antrum of the stomach, as well as duodenum before and after the application of AAP. The obtained results showed that the effects of AAP and usual drugs were equal. The fact that AAP was applied without any side effects and contraindications pointed to the possibility of its wider application in clinical practice.

[Adverse reactions to acupuncture].

Acupuncture is frequently used as an alternative therapy to drugs in the treatment of pain patients. In this review we discuss adverse reactions to acupuncture by means of case reports and our own clinical experience. Frequent side effects of acupuncture are local pain, autonomic nervous system reactions (including fainting) and small local bleeding or hematomas. There are, however, some case reports of serious adverse reactions. Since 1980, there have been 18 pneumothoraces post acupuncture therapy reported in the literature. Hepatitis due to inadequate hygiene standards has also been reported. Some patients with valvular heart disease have developed endocarditis after acupuncture. Ear acupuncture with permanent needles can cause chondritis or perichondritis. For any acupuncture treatment, a careful case history and exact diagnosis are necessary. In particular, it should be determined whether wound-healing disorders, immunosuppression, coagulation defects, valvular heart disease or pregnancy are present, as all of these constitute relative contraindications to acupuncture. Hygiene standards have to be observed. Bearing these points in mind, acupuncture is a reliable method with few side effects.

[Survey of point prescriptions of acupuncture treatment for urinary retention].

OBJECTIVE: To summarize characteristics of the point prescriptions for acupuncture treatment of urinary retention from 1994 to 2005. METHODS: Review of literature was made from following five aspects: body acupuncture, scalp acupuncture, ear acupuncture, hand acupuncture and abdomen acupuncture. For the prescriptions of body acupuncture, further analysis was made on single point prescription, distal-proximal point association, superior-inferior point association, point selection according to syndrome differentiation and point selection according to disease differentiation. CONCLUSION: Acupuncture has affirmative therapeutic effect on urinary retention. However, there are still problems to be resolved in clinical researches at present.

Acupuncture for the relief of cancer-related pain--a systematic review.

AIMS: This systematic review summarises the existing evidence on acupuncture for cancer-related pain. METHODS: Literature searches were conducted in seven databases. All clinical studies of acupuncture, electroacupuncture and ear acupuncture in cancer patients with the main outcome measure of pain were included. Data were extracted according to pre-defined criteria by two independent reviewers and methodological quality was assessed using the Jadad scale. RESULTS: Of the seven studies included, one high quality randomised clinical trial of ear acupuncture showed statistically significant pain relief in comparison with placebo ear acupuncture. All the other studies were either non-blinded (n=2) or uncontrolled clinical trials (n=4). Most investigations suffered from methodological flaws such as inadequate study design, poor reporting of results, small sample size and overestimation of the results. CONCLUSIONS: The notion that acupuncture may be an effective analgesic adjunctive method for cancer patients is not supported by the data currently available from the majority of rigorous clinical trials. Because of its widespread acceptance, appropriately powered RCTs are needed.
