[Normalization of the immunologic reactivity of student skiers with a protein preparation].

The effect of the serum-protein concentrate sbk-uf (TY 49626-79) npo "uglich", containing increased amounts of all essential amino acids, on the immunological responsiveness was studied in 21 skier-students. The investigation was conducted during a contest at the beginning and the end of a weekly microcycle when the athlets received the concentrate. Cellular and humoral immunity parameters were studied. It was found that sBK-ooF produced a normalizing effect on the immune processes in the athlets'body, and could be recommended as a biostimulator in the period of hard physical exercises in sports requiring powers of endurance.

[Biosynthesis of lytic enzymes in a mixed culture of actinomycetes and yeasts].

It was shown that S. levoris, an organism producing levorin, formed lytic enzymes in monocultures and in mixed cultures with C. tropicalis. Stimulation of the antibiotic production in the mixed cultures depended on the activity of lysoenzymes. When their activity was lowered by addition of cobalt salts to the medium the stimulating effect on the antibiotic synthesis was not observed. In cultivation of S. levoris and C. tropicalis it is necessary to provide optimal conditions for the growth of the yeasts and synthesis of the biostimulator by them and also for the simultaneous growth of the actinomycete and production of the antibiotic and lytic enzymes by it.

[Partial splenic resections and Nd-YAG laser].

Eleven partial splenectomies are performed in pigs. Simultaneous section and hemostasis are obtained with continuous 80 W power shoot. There is no hemorrhagic or septic complication and normal splenic weight is recovered in 5 months. Platelets elevation observed in post-operative. Platelets elevation observed in post-operative period returns to normal rate between 20th and 30th day. Acute cellular damage of cut splenic edge does not exceed 3 mm in thickness. Semi-thick and electron microscopic examination reveals at day 10 mitotic figures of lymphocytes (i.e. splenic regeneration) and at day 30 high density of mast cells and plasmocytes i.e. cellular biostimulation).

Health problems of windowless henhouses.

The working, health and zoohygiene problems of keeping chickens (45,000) in TEROZ type windowless houses on deep litter with controlled light regimen and hens (75,000) in cages were the subject of study for 3 years. The poultry was fed on factory-produced feedstuffs with the then permitted addition of CTC in amounts of 20 g/l tonne. Except for the low intensity of illumination in the chicken house (10-1.1 1x) and with the observation of the prescribed technology, the working environment is favourable. The state of health of the employees did not differ essentially from that of other groups of workers in aggriculture. The use of CTC resulted in a growing number of resistant microbial strains (Staphylococcus aureus, Proteus mirabilis, E. coli, etc) which led to the banning of its use and replacement by other biostimulants. Every type of large-scale poultry farm should be designed as a whole including the chicken incubator, the egg sorting station, the slaughter house, the use of waste matter and sewage disposal and should be previously tried out experimentally by a group of experts concerned with the given problems, before being introduced into wider use.

[Action of the products of the vital activity of yeastlike fungi on the biosynthesis of levorin, levoristatin and fatty acids by a Streptomyces levoris culture].

The data on the effect of the products of vital activity of Candida tropicalis, a yeast-like fungus, on the biosynthesis of levorin, levoristatin and fatty acids by Streptomyces levoris are presented. It was shown that the effect of the biostimulators was not specific with respect to production of levorin, since in the presence of the products of vital activity of C. tropicalis an increase in the synthesis of levoristatin and fatty acids was also observed. The qualitative and quantitative composition of the fatty acids of the mycelium of S. levoris was studied. Interrelation between the biosynthesis of levorin and synthesis of unsaturated fatty acids and branched chain fatty acids was noted.

[Indicators of nonspecific resistance of the body of patients with stomach cancer subjected to different methods of preoperative care].

An analysis of observation of 102 patients with gastric cancer has shown the application of anabolic steroid drugs in combination with plastic and energetic substrates, vitamins and biostimulators to result in increased indices of non-specific resistance in the preoperative period. The operative trauma against this background results in considerably less depression of resistance mechanisms than in the group of patients with the traditional preoperative management. It is followed by a less amount of early complications and lethality after operation.

[Experience with the use of aminalon in the complex treatment of children with meningococcal infections].

The results of using the Soviet drug aminalon in combined therapy of 143 children aged 7 months to 16 years suffering from generalized meningococcal infection are presented. According to the data of catamnestic observation the use of the drug in the early convalescence period contributed to a reduction of the incidence of residual manifestations in the patients, and prevented development of the cerebrospinal syndrome. In the late restorative period, the repeated courses of aminalon in combination with vitamins and other biostimulants are indicated in children with asthenohypodynamic states or having difficulties of learning at school.

[Changes in vessels of the microcirculatory bed following parenteral administration of xenogeneic cerebrospinal fluid obtained in vivo to normal animals and animals with experimental hypercholesterolemia].

Effect of parenteral administration of xenogenic liquor, vitally obtained, on the state of the microcirculatory bed, as well as its biostimulating action for cellular metabolism activation have been studied. The number of actively functioning capillaries increases, microvessels dilate, vascular permeability intensifies not only under normal conditions, but under experimental hypercholesteremia, as well. How the changes observed in the microcirculatory bed depend on various doses and total amount of the preparation administered, as well as means of its conservation have been analysed and stated. The dynamics of indices on lipid metabolism have been studied.

[Department of sterol biochemistry].

The Department of Steroid Biochemistry headed by Professor Vendt Volodymir Petrovich, Doctor of Biological Sciences (1906-1993) was created on the basis of the Department of Photobiochemistry in 1976. At that time the Department was headed by Kokunin Vasyl Andriyovich, Candidate of biological sciences, till 1990. Professor Yu.D.Kholodovais, Doctor of biological sciences, is the head of the department today. Study of action mechanism of low-molecular-weight biologically active substances of steroid nature (cholesterol, cholecalciferol, ecdysterone) under normal and pathological conditions (atherosclerosis, rickets) as well as the development of scientific grounds of production of new drugs used both in medicine and agriculture are the basic purposes of the Department. The department is engaged in: 1) the study of biosynthetic processes of de novo cholesterol and its precursors in different tissues and cells of the organism; 2) the elucidation of the role of sterols as the components of membrane structure in different cells as well as the study of cholesterol absorption processes in the intestine and the search of a hypocholesterolemic agents; 3) the study of localization and biological properties of vitamin D-dependent proteins in order to elucidate their role in intestinal calcium transport; 4) the investigation of different classes of blood plasma composition of intestine and liver lipoproteins (LP), their structural, functional properties and frequency of occurrence; 5) the search of highly effective biostimulators of steroid nature, the elucidation of their action mechanisms and elaboration of new preparations on their basis for medicine and agriculture. Sterols are components of lipids with cyclopentanoperhydrofenantren molecular structure. Cholesterol is the basic animal and human organism sterol. A new complicated, multi-step method of cholesterol biosynthesis and participation of a number of enzymes and cofactors in it have been studied (V. Vendt, R. Morozova, I. Nikolenko, Visnyk AN URSR, 1978). Cholesterol is the major component of cell membrane structures which determines their structure and permeability. The interest to study a new method of cholesterol biosynthesis regulation arises from the reason that cholesterol pools in membranes participate in such diseases as rachitis, atherosclerosis, arterial coronal disease, different forms of cholecystitis, etc. It is established that the nature, rate and intensity of de novo cholesterol biosynthesis depend on types of cells, tissues and organs, taking into account the functional state of final compounds in these biosystems under normal conditions.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

The effect of low-power lasers on intraoral wound healing.

Two types of helium-neon lasers were examined for their effectiveness in increasing the rate of wound healing by biostimulation. The diode helium-neon laser (670 nm) was as effective as the gas helium-neon laser (632 nm) in significantly speeding the rate of healing in rats. Thermal properties of low-power lasers and a controlled clinical case of helium-neon laser treatment of human aphthous stomatitis lesions were reported.

[The stimulation of the creatine kinase activity of tissue cultures with high-energy laser radiation].

Effects of copper laser stimulating doses on biochemical parameters of competent chicken embryo myoblast and neuroblast cultures were studied. It was shown that in both systems biostimulation was characterized by an increase of water-extractable protein level and a considerable rise of total and specific creatine kinase activity. The authors believe that cases of protein drop during myoblast culture exposure to chemical agents described in literature were caused by these agents overdosage and that this drop may be considered as a manifestation of a peculiar biochemical shock induced by overdosage. They suggest to follow up the time course of water-extractable protein levels in the cultures to differentiate between trophic and injurious loading.

[The CO2 laser and endodontic surgery: an epicritical evaluation].

The authors analyse the use of laser CO2 in endodontic surgery. They describe the laser biological effects on teeth, comprehending immediate structural changes (coagulation, carbonization, volatilization, fusion of dental tissue), and side effects (sterilization, modification of biomechanical properties and biostimulation). A surgical technique joining traditional aspects and laser radiation, restoring the apical shape to the anatomical origin is described. The employment of the laser in a defocalized way allows the sterilization of the apical region even in zones normally not reachable by the usual instruments. These devices are connected with laser irradiation and could improve the clinical results either improving bone restoration on raising dental tissue resistance to acidity. The authors emphasize that, whereas the clinical follow-up is in fact similar to the results obtained in a previous traditionally treated control group an accurate surgical technique will be the real important aspect to reach the recovery and the laser irradiation can help in it.

Lasers and wound healing.

The advances in laser surgery over the past decade have been remarkable and have significantly altered the management of a host of dermatologic disorders. This article focuses on the CO2 laser as a cutting and vaporization tool and reviews the features that distinguish CO2 laser-induced wounds from those created by a scalpel. Tissue welding, wound management after skin treatment with the visible light lasers based on the principle of selective photothermolysis, as well as the controversial field of low-energy laser therapy (biostimulation) are also addressed.

[LILAB, a new system for superficial application of low intensity laser beams in medicine].

Laser energy densities between 1 and 4 J/cm2 evoked a significant biostimulation in human tissues. Lower energy densities had no apparent effect, but higher energy densities resulted in cell damage. In principle, low energy densities can be applied with high-energy lasers in combination with laser beam diverging lenses, or with low-power lasers in combination with scanning devices. High-energy lasers are undesirable because of their high cost. Low-energy lasers in combination with conventional scanners also suffer from high cost, and these scanners have another major disadvantage: the energy density at the edge of the application field may be up to five times as great as in the center. A new laser beam distribution system for medical applications is introduced here. Because of its moderate price it is well-suited for use with low-energy lasers. Any desired geometrical shape of the application field is easily created, and with a homogeneous energy density.

Wound healing after laser surgery.

Compared with scalpel wounds, CO2 laser wounds show delays in inflammation, collagen production, reepithelialization, and tensile strength in the early stages of healing. Some of these delays are similar to those seen with electrocautery and burn wounds. Later stages compensate for these early deficiencies, because scalpel and laser wounds become more similar in epithelialization and wound strength over time. Healed CO2 laser wounds tend to have less scar contraction than scalpel wounds. Débridement of initial laser wound char, tissue cooling techniques during lasering, and pulsed modes of laser delivery all seem to result in more rapid, favorable healing. Similar wound healing trends have been seen with the CO2 laser in bone, with other lasers, and with laser vascular and neural anastomosis. Biostimulation with low-level laser energy is a complex subject of ongoing investigations.

Low-power lasers in medicine. A report by the Australian Health Technology Advisory Committee (AHTAC) June 1994.

Low-power lasers are those that deliver an output power in the milliwatt (mW) range. Output is typically between 1 and 30 mW, but can be up to 100 mW; It has been suggested that low power lasers cause biostimulation--a photochemical response to laser light inducing biochemical alterations in cells. However, there is no universally agreed theory to explain the mechanism of the claimed effects of treatment; The wavelengths, treatment protocols and conditions to be treated are not established; Low-power lasers are in widespread use for the treatment, in the main, of a range of musculoskeletal problems, despite little published evidence of efficacy; Evidence from controlled trials is inconclusive and conflicting; The Australian Health Technology Advisory Committee considers that the efficacy of low-power lasers in the treatment of musculoskeletal and other conditions is not established. The Committee therefore recommends that; those who use this technology should take steps to obtain unequivocal evidence of benefit from appropriately designed and conducted trials; and in any clinical use of such lasers, the treatment protocols should be clearly defined.

Exposure of eyes to laser radiation during dental surgery.

Fifty patients admitted to the clinic because of dental surgery were subjected to biostimulative laser therapy. Ophthalmological examinations were performed in each patient prior and after laserotherapy. The results were estimated according to the occurrence of lacrimation, redness of the conjunctiva, photophobia and the changed retinal reflex to the light. No pathological changes were revealed in the treated patients who had used protective glasses during the laserotherapy.
