Ticks and tick-borne disease systems in space and from space.

Analyses within geographical information systems (GISs) indicate that small- and large-scale ranges of hard tick species (Ixodidae) are determined more by climate and vegetation than by host-related factors. Spatial distributions of ticks may therefore be analysed by statistical methods that seek correlations between known tick presence/absence and ground- or remotely-sensed (RS) environmental factors. In this way, local habitats of Amblyomma variegatum in the Caribbean and Ixodes ricinus in Europe have been mapped using Landsat RS imagery, while regional and continental distributions of African and temperate tick species have been predicted using multi-temporal information from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration-Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (NOAA-AVHRR) imagery. These studies illustrate ways of maximizing statistical accuracy, whose interpretation is then discussed in a biological framework. Methods such as discriminant analysis are biologically transparent and interpretable, while others, such as logistic regression and tree-based classifications, are less so. Furthermore, the most consistently significant variable for predicting tick distributions, the RS Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), has a sound biological basis in that it is related to moisture availability to free-living ticks and correlated with tick mortality rates. The development of biological process-based models for predicting the spatial dynamics of ticks is a top priority, especially as the risk of tick-borne infections is commonly related not simply to the vector's density, but to its seasonal population dynamics. Nevertheless, using statistical pattern-matching, the combination of RS temperature indices and NDVI successfully predicts certain temporal features essential for the transmission of tick-borne encephalitis virus, which translate into a spatial pattern of disease foci on a continental scale.

Performance of a miniaturized bioreactor in space flight: microtechnology at the service of space biology.

We describe here the performance and the use of microtechnology in a miniaturized bioreactor developed for the continuous cultivation of yeast cells, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, in microgravity. This bioreactor has been used on two Shuttle missions, where its functionality was successfully demonstrated. In the future, bioreactors will become a key element for long-term experiments, and would also be applied in the cultivation of mammalian cells or tissues for medical applications.

[Neoplastic space-occupying lesions of the orbits. II. Space-occupying lesion in the area of the lacrimal gland].

In part two of this paper about orbital tumors, neoplasms of the lacrimal gland are discussed: These have to be properly separated from inflammations. While inflammatory affections of the lacrimal gland make up the majority of private practice consultations, in cases referred to an eye clinic the relation between inflammatory diseases and neoplasms is about equal (between 1987 and 1990, 14 neoplasias and 14 inflammations were seen at the University Eye Clinic, Zurich). The benign pleomorphic adenoma of the lacrimal gland should be removed in toto in its capsule. For this procedure a lateral orbital fenestration is required. An excisional biopsy is considered the method of choice while an incisional biopsy should be avoided because of the risk of recurrence. On the other hand, incisional biopsy is used in the cases of adenoidcystic carcinoma and lymphoma. After confirmation of an adenoidcystic carcinoma by biopsy, orbital exenteration has to follow as soon as possible. In cases of lymphoma, possible oncological treatment has to be evaluated. In order to differentiate histologically between a reactive lymphoid hyperplasia and a malignant lymphoma, immunofluorescent studies on non-fixed tissue are necessary in close collaboration with an immuno-pathologist. Because the benign pleomorphic adenoma of the lacrimal gland has to be treated by a different surgical approach than the adenoid cystic carcinoma, a proper diagnosis has to be made before any intervention; a requirement we could not always fulfill. Those mistakes made us conclude that even in the era of CT scan, MRI and angiography, the radiological diagnoses are often hypotheses which have to be confirmed by discussion.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
