Effectiveness of certain teat dips and sanitizers in vitro and on teat skin against Mycoplasma agalactiae subsp. bovis.

Seven teat dip and sanitizer products were tested in vitro and in vivo for mycoplasmacidal activity against Mycoplasma agalactiae subsp. bovis (M. bovimastitidis). Most, but not all products tested appeared to kill the mycoplasma at satisfactory dilutions. These mycoplasma survived longer on teat skin during humid, rainy weather than during warm, dry weather. Acholeplasma laidlawii was frequently found on normal teat skin.

[The method of parietal-cavitary sanitation of intestines in complex treatment of acute diffuse peritonitis].

Experimental investigations carried out in 154 white rats and 24 mongrel dogs have proved pathogenetical effectiveness and safety of using the method of parietal-cavitary sanitation of the intestine in treatment of acute experimental peritonitis. This method used in complex treatment in 28 patients with acute diffuse peritonitis allowed a 1.5-2 times quicker arrest of the syndrome of endogenous intoxication and liquidation of intestinal paresis. Infectious complications were 43% less frequent and the lethality indices were reduced by 9.5% as compared with the results obtained in the control group.

An evaluation of disinfectants for the sanitation of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus-contaminated transport vehicles at cold temperatures.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of commercially available disinfectants to sanitize porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) contaminated trailer models in cold climates (-20 degrees C and 4 degrees C). Disinfectants evaluated included Synergize, Aseptol 2000, Biophene, Sentramax, Virkon, Tek Trol, and DC&R. All products were applied to trailers via fumigation at 4 degrees C. Following experimental contamination of model trailers with PRRSV MN 30-100 (5 x 10(5) TCID50), models were tested for the presence or absence of PRRSV-RNA by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) on swabs collected 0, 30, and 60 min after treatment. Treatments included washing only, washing plus disinfectant fumigation, washing plus fumigation, and washing plus overnight drying. The PRRSV-RNA detected across trailers ranged from 0/12 replicates in trailers treated with Synergize or allowed to dry for 8 h. These trailers were also negative for the presence of infectious PRRSV, based on the lack of sentinel pig infection (0/4 replicates). In contrast, the detection of PRRSV-positive swabs by PCR ranged from 3/12 (Aseptol) to 10/12 (Biophene). Based on these results, the efficacy of Synergize was evaluated at -20 degrees C. In an attempt to reduce the impact of freezing on disinfectant activity, 30 mL of disinfectant was added to a 3840 mL of a 40% methanol solution, a 10% propylene glycol (PG) solution, or water alone. The PRRSV-contaminated trailers were treated with 1 of 3 disinfectant mixtures via fumigation, stored for 8 h at -20 degrees C, allowed to thaw, and sampled as described. Trailers treated with 40% methanol or 10% PG did not freeze and were negative for PRRSV-RNA and infectious virus following thawing. In contrast, trailers treated with disinfectant and water were frozen within 60 min at -20 degrees C, and decontamination was not successful.

[Role of endoscopic sanitation in the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases].

The results of conducted investigations and experience of bronchoscopy (more than 1500 per year) confirm that use of endoscopic sanitation in treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases sufficiently improves the function of external breathing, speeds-up recovery of patient and extends remission. We consider that chronic obstructivepulmonary disease (COPD) is an indication for medical-and-diagnostic fibrobronchoscopy.

[Improvement of the transthoracic method of puncture sanitation in complex treatment of lung abscess].

A method of transthoracic puncture sanitation treatment of the cavity of a lung abscess with the use of a needle of an original design and the proteolytic enzyme karipazyme (0.5% solution) is suggested. Fifty-two patients with abscess of the lung (main group) were treated by this method, 46 (88.4 +/- 4.4%) were cured, in 5 (9.6 +/- 4.1%) transformation to a chronic abscess occurred, one patient (1.9 +/- 1.7%) died. Transthoracic puncture with a commonly used needle and administration of antibiotics into the cavity of the abscess were performed in 57 patients (control group). Thirty-eight patients (66.7 +/- 9%; p less than 0.05) recovered, chronic abscess formed in 14 patients (27.6 +/- 5.9; p less than 0.05), 5 patients (8.7 +/- 3.7%) died. The duration of treatment of patients in the main group was reduced by 16.1 days. The method of skin coloured liquid-crystal thermography was employed in 28 patients to determine the optimal point for puncturing the abscess, as the result of which complications were avoided and the number of failures in puncture of the lung destruction cavity reduced by half.

Intermediate filament-ubiquitin diseases: implications for cell sanitization.

The molecular pathology of chronic degenerative disease is not understood. Generally there must be two related, but opposing, processes: the direct deleterious effects of the pathogenic insult which can be chemical or viral and a cellular cytoprotective response to the insult. We have recently shown that there is a previously unsuspected link between the intracellular inclusions seen in some major chronic degenerative diseases: the inclusions contain ubiquitin immunoreactivity. The conditions include Parkinson's disease, motor neurone disease, Alzheimer's disease and alcoholic liver disease as well as astrocytomas and a myopathy. Protein ubiquitination is considered a signal for extra-lysosomal protein degradation although ubiquitin-protein conjugation may have several other important functions. Intermediate filaments are a component of some of the inclusions in diseased cells; we have previously reported that they are involved in protein sequestration for degradation by lysosomally mediated autophagy. Therefore, intermediate-filament-containing ubiquitinated inclusions may be hallmarks of cellular attempts to eliminate pathogenic insults by activating protein degradation mechanisms. Ubiquitinated inclusions could also be a hallmark of viral infections: they are in polio-virus-infected anterior horn neurones and Epstein-Barr-transformed lymphoblastoid cells. Some of the clinical observations can be reproduced experimentally in tissue culture cells. The implications of the combined clinical and experimental observations for cell sanitization and protein catabolism will be discussed.

[Education concerning health, water and sanitation in the control of schistosomiasis].

Education concerning prevailing health problems and the methods of preventing and controlling them is the first of the eight essential components of health care stated in the Declaration of Alma-Ata 1978. As regards schistosomiasis, the current strategy of control is based on the reduction of morbidity within the context of primary health care. In this perspective, it follows that in any control programme health education must have a central place in its operations. This health education, a multidisciplinary science so far neglected by health programmes of developing countries, now has new approaches that health workers must take into account. In the case of schistosomiasis, the target of health education must be the control of transmission (human-water contacts), sanitation (urinary and faecal contamination) and chemotherapy, all this with the voluntary and conscious participation of the community. There are no standard health education programmes which are applicable everywhere; they must be developed locally with the communities concerned so that the health technologies proposed will be appropriate, applicable, and compatible with their socio-cultural situation and their resources.

[Sanitation bronchoscopy in the treatment of nonspecific lung diseases].

The authors provide the results of application of sanitation bronchoscopy in patients with nonspecific lung diseases. Differential (depending on the disease etiology, endobronchitis pattern, immunity) application of antibacterial drugs, bacteriophages, immunity and regeneration stimulants substantially improves the disease course and prognosis. As compared to the control group, the main group patients manifested a more rapid positive dynamics of the immunological parameters.

Evaluation of glutaraldehyde and hydrogen peroxide for sanitizing packaging materials of medical devices in sterility testing.

External surfaces of packaging materials used for sterile medical devices may introduce contaminants into working areas used for sterility testing. Light wiping with tissues moistened with alkaline 2% glutaraldehyde (Cidex) or 3% hydrogen peroxide effectively reduced counts on 5 X 8 cm strips of packaging material (Tyvek) inoculated with 10(7) spores of Bacillus subtilis. The ability of antimicrobial agents to penetrate packaging material and kill contaminants on the medical device was tested by inoculating filter membranes with ca 100 cells of Pseudomonas aeruginosa or Staphylococcus aureus or ca 100 spores of Bacillus subtilis. A sterile square of test packaging material placed over the inoculated membrane (direct method) or 0.5 cm above the membrane (indirect method) was wiped with the antimicrobial agent. Except for polyethylene film (3 mil), all materials tested, including glassine and several types of coated and uncoated Tyvek, were penetrated by the agents, killing cells on the inoculated membranes. Death rates varied, depending on the organism, packaging material, and testing method. It is suggested that penetration tests be performed before using antimicrobial agents for sanitizing packaging materials during sterility tests.

Electronic probe measurements of cervico-vaginal mucus for detection of ovulation in dairy cows: sanitation, clinical observations and microflora.

An electronic vaginal probe with a sanitizing carrier unit has been designed to measure changes in the electrical resistance of cervico-vaginal mucus in the cow. Over 400 cows and heifers have been probed during the period prior to breeding. When 33 heifers and cows were probed 2-3X per day for 30 days, mild irritation of the vaginal mucosa developed during the luteal phase. In all other studies no grossly detectable lesions or other complications resulting from probing were observed either in experimental herds or in farmer herds where breeding tests were conducted. Fertility of probed cows was equal to cows inseminated when estrus was detected visually. Weekly culture of microorganisms from cervico-vaginal mucus collected from three cows probed 3X per week for 22 days resulted in no detectable change in the population of microorganisms. The number of isolates each successive week was 11, 8, 8 and 5, respectively. The sanitary procedures followed appeared to prevent introduction of organisms of any consequence, as judged by the decreasing number of isolates during the probing sequence.

[Vocational schools and the development of the human resources for water and sanitation institutions].

On the basis of his experience in occupational training in Panama, the author regards the vocational, professional and technical school as endowed with the requisites for the provision of adequate training of personnel for water supply and sanitation institutions. In his view, the programs of those schools, with their substantial content in technical, cultural and scientific subjects as well as practical activities, provide training that will enable the student to function successfully in the field in which he will be employed, and to pursue high-level careers. Despite the difficulties of various kinds to be surmounted, the author feels that, with the collaboration of the institutions in the sector, programs could be designed with any occupational profile that were regarded as necessary, as an accurate response for producing the technicians that the institutions need. The study plans of the professional and technical schools of Panama are added in an appendix.

Promoting sanitation in Bangladesh.

A community-level survey was made in Bangladesh to assess the effectiveness of a health promotion campaign on sanitation. The data collected showed that the mobilization of schoolchildren to promote the construction and use of sanitary latrines had a significant impact on local practices. Poorer families appeared to be more responsive to the idea of building their own sanitary latrines than those who were slightly better off, who sometimes saw the homemade latrine as a symbol of low status. In several cases the woman of the household did the construction work rather than the man, and this aspect of women's participation could usefully be emphasized in future campaigns.
