A tribute to Senator Sam Brownback.

This brief biography can provide only a few glimpses into the character and achievements of Senator Sam Brown-back. He had some very big shoes to fill, taking over the seat of the venerated Senator Dole. He has done amazingly well representing his native state of Kansas and the nation with unusual passion and integrity. His pursuit of excellence in every respect and his deep caring for the well being of all Americans are at the root of his success. As the years go by, the Senator will, through the acquisition of seniority, gather even more respect, power, and authority. This is good news for Kansas and the nation. It means that he will have all the more opportunity to do good and to help others. Senator Brownback is deserving of the great respect and admiration of good men and women everywhere on the planet.

[Effect of epitalon and melatonin on life span and spontaneous carcinogenesis in senescence accelerated mice (SAM)].

Female senescence accelerated mice SAMP-1. (prone) and SAMR-1 (resistant) were exposed 5 times a week monthly to melatonin (with drinking water 20mg/ml during the night hours) or to s.c. injections of epitalon (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) at a single dose 1mkg/mouse. Control mice were intact or exposed to injection of 0.1 ml normal saline. The body weight and temperature, food consumption, estrous function were monitored regularly. The life span and tumor incidence were evaluated as well. As age advanced, the weight increased whereas food consumption and body temperature did not change. There was no significant substrain difference in these parameters. Exposure to melatonin or epitalon also failed to influence those indices. As age advanced, the incidence of irregular estrous cycles increased both in SAMP-1 and SAMR-1, whereas the treatment with both melatonin and epitalon prevented such disturbances. SAMP-1 revealed some features of accelerated aging as compared to SAMR-1. The mean life span of the 10% of the last survivors among treated SAMP-1 was shorter than that of SAMR-1, aging rate increased and mortality doubling time decreased. There was a direct correlation between body mass of the two substrains at the age of 3 and 12 months matched by body mass increase and longer life span. Melatonin or epitalon treatment was followed by longer mean and maximum survival in the 10% of the last survivors among SAMP-1. Melatonin involved decreased aging rate and increased mortality doubling time. Malignant lymphomas predominated in SAM without any significant difference in frequency between the substrains. While melatonin failed to influence tumor incidence or term of detection in SAMP-1, neither did epitalon affect frequency. However, it was followed by longer survival in tumor-free animals. No link between melatonin or epitalon treatment, on the one hand, and carcinogenesis, on the other, was reported in SAMR-1.

[The analysis of error sources for SAM and its improvement algorithms].

Based on the analysis of the error sources for spectral anglemapping (SAM), several key elements are pointed out, i.e. the change of wave band location, the change of the attribution ratio, the random change of attribution, and the whole translation of wave band. After the above-mentioned four error sources are analyzed, the authors present several improvement algorithms, viz. calculating the spectral angle with grouping, normalization and intersection. The grouping method can resolve the pseudo-similar problem, because it considers both spectral global features and local features. Calculating spectral angle with normalization restrains those random errors in original data by normalizing the spectral vectors. The intersection method can eliminate the error elicited by the whole wave translation. Therefore, it can be employed to correctly identify spectral class. Experiments show that those improvement algorithms are effective and can be used to process spectral data with errors.

TPA-induced arrest of erythroid differentiation is coupled with downregulation of GATA-1 and upregulation of GATA-2 in an erythroid cell line SAM-1.

GATA-1 protein is thought to be a positive regulator of erythroid differentiation. However, ectopic expression of a conditional GATA-2/estrogen receptor chimera was shown to inhibit erythroid differentiation in a hormone-dependent manner, suggesting the negative regulation of erythroid differentiation by GATA-2 protein. Accordingly, we reasoned that the quantitative balance of GATA-1 and GATA-2 protein might affect erythroid differentiation. In this report, we performed specific and quantitative measurements of GATA-1 and GATA-2 protein in a new erythroid cell line, SAM-1, after treatment with 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate (TPA). On the basis of these measurements, we show that TPA-induced arrest of erythroid differentiation is coupled with the upregulation of GATA-2 protein, as well as the downregulation of GATA-1 protein. Our results suggest that it is the precise quantitative balance of GATA-1 and GATA-2 protein that regulates erythroid differentiation.

Parameterization studies for the SAM and HMMER methods of hidden Markov model generation.

Multiple sequence alignment of distantly related viral proteins remains a challenge to all currently available alignment methods. The hidden Markov model approach offers a new, flexible method for the generation of multiple sequence alignments. The results of studies attempting to infer appropriate parameter constraints for the generation of de novo HMMs for globin, kinase, aspartic acid protease, and ribonuclease H sequences by both the SAM and HMMER methods are described.

Blinking Sam: the ocular afflictions of Dr. Samuel Johnson.

The poor health of Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) has fascinated the public for more than 200 years. The illnesses of few famous men, with the possible exception of Napoleon, have attracted more speculation. Johnson was an outstanding 18th-century literary figure, an essayist, novelist, and poet, and is particularly famous as the creator of the first important dictionary of the English language. His writings and those of his physicians and friends, particularly his biographer, James Boswell, provide an intimate account of a cultural icon.

SAMS: provisionally unique multiple congenital anomalies syndrome consisting of short stature, auditory canal atresia, mandibular hypoplasia, and skeletal abnormalities.

We report on a young Mennonite child born with short stature, atresia of the external auditory canal, mandibular hypoplasia, and skeletal anomalies. The skeletal defects consist of bilateral humeral hypoplasia, delayed ossification of the pubic rami, and the previously unreported anomaly of humeroscapular synostosis. This girl is the product of a consanguineous mating. This phenotype is unique and does not match that of any previously described condition.
