In field tests for the control of house fly larvae in dung heaps of a pig fattening and breeding farm with Neporex SP 50 revealed, that the same species of parasitoids (Muscidifurax raptor, Spalangia nigroaenea, S. cameroni, Phygadeuon fumator) were capable to develop in cyromazine-damaged, larviform host puparia as in undamaged puparia. The parasitization rate is, however, about 3 times and the hatch of flies is twice as high in normal formed puparia compared with larviform puparia. Comparing the attractivity of untreated normal puparia with cyromazine-damaged, larviform puparia under laboratory conditions showed that the mentioned puparia gave rise to 2-3 times as much parasitoids. Rearing M. raptor and M. zaraptor on larviform host puparia in the laboratory led to a distinct decrease in the development of the parasitoid between populations within 3 ... 5 generations. Parasitoids emerged from larviform and from undamaged puparia showed not differences in their life dates in the F1 generation.

Nucleopolyhedrosis virus (NPV) belongs to the group of baculoviruses. The genome of NPV consists of a circular supercoil double stranded DNA approximately 128 kb in length. During the replication of NPV two forms of virus progeny are produced. One is extracellular virus and the other is occluded virus in inclusion body. The occluded virus is embedded within the polyhedron so that the viruses are protected from environmental factors and kept stable for a long time. When the inclusion body is ingested by insects, the polyhedra is dissolved in midgut and under alkaline condition the virus particles are released and the sensitive tissues of the insect are infected. The polyhedrin is encoded by polyhedrin gene of NPV with a molecular weight about 30,000 daltons. The polyhedrin protein is not essential for the infection and replication of NPV. Therefore, the polyhedrin gene can be used as a vector for foreign genes when inserted into NPV DNA and expressing in insect cells or in larvae. The polyhedrin gene is a strong promoter. In general the polyhedrin protein accumulated in the infected cells reaches high levels, about 50% of total cell proteins on SDS-PAGE analysis. The expression product is kept in its natural conformation, and glycosylated. In addition, the baculovirus is not pathogenic to vertebrates and plants. A series of expression vectors of baculovirus developed by Dr. Summers et al. has been used for the expression of a wide variety of heterogenous genes. How to increase the expression efficiency of this system is not quite clear.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Autoproteolysis is an essential activity in the expression of the entire genomes of a number of viruses. That is, new viruses can be produced only after large polyprotein products translated from the genome or from subgenomic mRNA degrade themselves to the polypeptides necessary for RNA replication or for the construction of new virus particles. We have recently shown that the major heat shock protein of Drosophila and a mouse cell line (70 kDa) also undergoes autoproteolysis with the production of specific patterns of smaller polypeptides. We show now that many other proteins in eucaryotic tissues also have a potential for self-degradation. We suggest that special coding regions in many genes may have important roles in both protein turnover and in the production of regulatory peptides.
