Validity of the Missouri Children's Picture Series as a predictor of childhood sleep disturbances.

In view of recent findings in a retrospective study by two of the authors, the present research was designed to systematically assess the validity of the Missouri Children's Picture Series sleep disturbances scale. Study I compared groups of restless sleepers and nocturnal enuretics with matched cohorts attending a summer residential program for children with communication-related disorders. Study II examined the relation of two MCPS scales to parent reports of corresponding problems, using a multitrait-multimethod matrix, individual correlations, and cluster analysis. Neither study provided convincing evidence for the validity of the sleep disturbance scale.

Ehrlichia chaffeensis in Missouri ticks.

A nested polymerase chain reaction specific for Ehrlichia chaffeensis was used to attempt to amplify DNA from extracts of 100 individual ticks collected from 13 counties in central Missouri. Seventeen of 59 Amblyomma americanum and six of 41 Dermacentor variabilis ticks exhibited the characteristic 389-basepair product. This supports the hypothesis that these tick species may be vectors of human monocytic ehrlichiosis.

Medicare program; Peer Review Organizations: revised scopes of work for the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and all states except Delaware, Florida, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Washington, and Wyoming--HCFA. Final notice.

Missouri's lakes and the disposal of homicide victims.

This paper presents the circumstances surrounding the retrieval and subsequent autopsies of four bodies accidentally discovered weighted down in Missouri's lakes. The bodies, representing four separate cases of homicide, were sunken for a period of three weeks to ten months. The relationship of adipocere formation to the postmortem interval and the problems of injury interpretation are discussed.

Reliability of information on chronic disease risk factors collected in the Missouri Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System.

The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) is widely used by state health agencies to measure the prevalence of chronic disease risk factors. We completed a test-retest study to assess the reliability of the Missouri Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. We conducted telephone reinterviews for 222 respondents of completed Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System interviews from March and April 1993. The second interview was completed between 6 and 30 days after the first interview. Agreement was high for sociodemographic variables (kappa values from 0.85 to 1.00). Reliability of information on chronic conditions and risk factors was also high, with kappa values from 0.82 for hypertension to 1.00 for current smoking status. Regarding cancer screening practices, reliability was lower for knowledge of the prostate-specific antigen test (kappa = 0.21) than for women's cancer screening practices (that is, the mammogram and Papanicolaou smear). Questions on attitudes toward environmental tobacco smoke showed lower reliability than did questions on individual actions to reduce exposure to environmental tobacco smoke.

Revision of the genus Torogregarina and description of Torogregarina sphinx n. sp. (Apicomplexa: Eugregarinida) from a Missouri river bank beetle, Bembidion laevigatum (Coleoptera: Carabidae), in southeastern Nebraska.

Torogregarina is revised to clarify the nature of the epimerite-protomerite complex and the method of gametocyst dehiscence, removed from the family Gregarinidae, and placed among the Hirmocystidae. Torogregarina sphinx n. sp. (Apicomplexa: Eugregarinida) is described from Bembidion laevigatum (Coleoptera: Carabidae) collected along the Missouri River near Peru, Nemaha County, Nebraska. Measurements are means in micrometers. Association is precocious and caudofrontal. Primite epimerite depressed ovoid and persistent through syzygy; length 25.2, width 41.0. Protomerite a high toroid collar between epimerite and deutomerite; length 13.5, width 35.4. Deutomerite obovoid; length 137.3, width 90.7. Total length including epimerite 172.2. Satellite epimerite protomerite complex concentrically formed by a depressed ovoid epimerite within a transversely oblong protomerite, the protruding dome of the epimerite fitting into a posterior depression on the primite and the transverse anterior margin of the protomerite mating with the posterior margin of the primite to form the syzygial junction; length 25.0, width 48.8. Deutomerite obovoid; length 113.5, width 63.5. Total length 138.6. Gametocysts roughly spherical; diameter 142.9. Gametocysts mature and dehisce by simple rupture, extruding oocysts in a single mass without an epispore packet. Oocysts axially symmetric, dolioform in dorsal aspect, concavoconcave in transverse plane, uniform in size and shape; length 5.2, terminal width 2.4, equatorial width 3.1.

An examination of gender and racial differences among Missouri insanity acquittees.

This study examines gender and racial differences among Missouri insanity acquittees, which included 42 African American females, 279 African American males, 63 Caucasian females, and 458 Caucasian males. Significant differences across the four groups were not found in age, current marital status, a diagnosis of borderline intellectual functioning/mental retardation, committing crimes of assault and burglary, and whether insanity acquittees ever received conditional releases to reside in the community. Some variations across the four gender/race categories were related to race (diagnoses of schizophrenia, mood disorders, and other Axis I diagnoses), but variations were more frequently related to gender (whether ever married; diagnoses of substance abuse, sexual disorders, antisocial personality disorder, borderline personality disorder, and any personality disorder; committing crimes of murder, sexual offenses, and serious offenses; and current residential status). African American males were identified as being an at-risk population. They were the most likely to have a schizophrenia diagnosis, a substance abuse diagnosis, an antisocial personality disorder diagnosis, and to be hospitalized on the survey date. Implications for treatment and future research are explored.
