Why do rich countries prefer free trade over free migration? The role of the modern welfare state.

"According to traditional trade theory (Heckscher-Ohlin), free trade and free migration are equivalent measures of economic integration leading both to an equalization of factor prices. This prediction is in sharp opposition to the observed preference of rich countries for free trade over free migration. We provide an explanation for this inconsistency: the redistribution policies in the countries. Social welfare in countries with a relatively small number of low-skilled native workers is higher with free trade than with free migration due to redistribution of income towards immigrating workers."

Remigration and social change--prospects for the migrant worker sending countries of the Middle East.

The author examines sociocultural aspects of the remigration of workers in the Middle East. He "suggests that migrants adopt, collectively, new cultural attitudes which they will attempt to maintain after getting re-settled back home." Consideration is given to consumerism and the religious beliefs of the repatriated workers. Special emphasis is given to return migration to Egypt and Pakistan.

Workers' remittances from the Middle East and their effect on Pakistan's economy.

"This paper makes an attempt to analyse the impact of remittances on the Pakistani economy, in particular, on broad economic indicators [such] as GNP growth, saving, and balance of payments (BOP), from 1969-70 to 1985-86. Section II estimates the contribution of the remittances, from the Middle East, to the growth in the Gross National Product (GNP), over different sub-periods. In Section III, an analysis of the relationship between national/domestic savings and remittances is given. Section IV discusses the impact of remittances on the balance of payments position of Pakistan. Finally, the main findings are summarized in Section V." Comments by Meekal A. Ahmad are included (pp. 762-3).

Afro-Caribbean migrants in France: employment, state policy and the migration process.

"Afro-Caribbean labour in France plays a distinctive role relative to the French population as a whole and the foreign immigrant population. Using a variety of qualitative and quantitative sources, this paper demonstrates that the role of the state in the process of migration from the French Caribbean islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe from the early 1960s onwards was crucial.... Aggregate sources are used to describe detailed occupational distributions while records of individual migrants illustrate the process of migration and the influences on employment. At a time usually characterized by lack of direct involvement in migration by the French state, for Afro-Caribbeans state intervention in recruitment, training and settlement is shown to be very substantial."

[Demographic differences between nonnative groups: the impact of international migration].

The impact of international migration on the composition of the population of the Netherlands is examined. The authors conclude that "the non-native population shows a considerable variety from a demographic point of view. Differences in composition by age and sex can largely be attributed to differences in migration patterns. Both the size and the period of migration flows have had their influence, as well as the type of migration (labour migration, family reunification, etc.). Apart from the direct influence there are also indirect effects because of demographic events that took place after the migration, like births, marriages and deaths." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

[The European migration situation and its perspectives].

"The present migration situation is analysed in regard to the labour market, the legal status of migrants, return flows and reintegration, and the position of second generation migrants.... In the second part of the paper the author attempts to discern the future of migration in Europe on the basis of existing demographic trends in Europe and the world, present trends [in] the labour market, and current technological changes. In this context he offers an outline for the Yugoslav migration perspective." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

Europe without internal frontiers and international migration.

"This paper documents the process by which the freedom of movement of workers has been established in the European Community and uses data on migrant flows and stocks to assess whether such freedom of movement has had a significant effect in increasing intra-Community migration. Although the evidence suggests that the presence of Community workers increased in newly admitted Community member States, such as the United Kingdom during the 1970s and, more recently, Greece, Portugal and Spain, the numbers involved are small in relative terms. In contrast, the enactment of freedom of movement provisions has not contributed to a noticeable increase in the outflow of workers from the poorer to the richer member States."
