A Web-based system for the intelligent management of diabetic patients.

We describe the design and implementation of a distributed computer-based system for the management of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. The goal of the system is to support the normal activities of the physicians and patients involved in the care of diabetes by providing them with a set of automated services ranging from data collection and transmission to data analysis and decision support. The system is highly integrated with current practices in the management of diabetes, and it uses Internet technology to achieve high availability and ease of use. In particular, the user interaction takes place through dynamically generated World Wide Web pages, so that all the system's functions share an intuitive graphic user interface.

Active and intelligent packaging: applications and regulatory aspects.

Changes in the way foods are produced, distributed, stored and retailed, reflecting the continuing increase in consumer demands for improved quality and extended shelf-life for packaged foods, are placing ever-greater demands on the performance of food packaging. Consumers want to be assured that the packaging is fulfilling its function of protecting the integrity, quality, freshness and safety of foods. To provide this assurance and help improve the performance of the packaging, innovative active and intelligent packaging concepts are being developed and applied in various countries. In Europe, however, the development and application of active and intelligent packaging systems have been limited thus far. The main reasons are legislative restrictions and a lack of knowledge about consumer acceptance, the efficacy of such systems, and the economic and environmental impact they may have. Therefore, in 1999, a European study was started within the framework of the EU FAIR R&D programme. It aims to initiate amendments to European legislation for food-contact materials to establish and implement active and intelligent systems within the current relevant regulations for packaged food in Europe. This paper presents an overview of existing active and intelligent systems and their current and future food-related applications. In addition, developments and trends in active and intelligent food packaging are discussed. The objectives and the work programme of the European project are reviewed and the results obtained so far are presented. The benefits for both the European consumer and the European food and food-packaging industries are highlighted.

Functionalizing inorganic solids: towards organic-inorganic nanostructured materials for intelligent and bioinspired systems.

The design, preparation, and properties of organic-inorganic hybrid compounds are described and discussed with respect to their potential uses as intelligent and bioinspired materials. Several synthesis strategies based on intercalation in 2D solids, the grafting of organic groups onto silica and silicates, and the self-assembly of organo-silica materials are presented, focusing on the soft procedures that are used to modify the functionality of the inorganic substrates. The combination of both organic and inorganic moieties at the nanometer level forms the basis for preparing multifunctional solids that are provided with specific functions in response to different types of stimuli. In some cases these resemble materials that are found in biological systems. Examples include organic-inorganic membranes that are based on intercalated macrocyclic compounds and bi-layer vesicles that consist of alkyl long-chains arranged either in the confined region of layered silicates or as self-organized organo-silica micelles. The role of certain hybrid materials such as membranes provides a different approach to the development of artificial liposomes and other mimetic systems that have an organic-inorganic composition and nanostructural organization. Their potential uses for DDS or DNA-dense phases are also discussed and novel alternatives to bioinspired systems development are proposed.

Effects of the fitting parameters of a two-channel compression system on the intelligibility of speech in quiet and in noise.

These experiments were carried out to assess how accurately the gains and compression ratios in a two-channel compression system needed to be set. We used as a research tool a laboratory version of a two-channel full-dynamic-range compression system. The system was initially adjusted to suit each hearing-impaired subject according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Then, further adjustments were made to ensure that speech stimuli were both audible and comfortable over a wide range of sound levels. Finally, the settings of the gains and compression ratios were systematically varied from the adjusted values and the effects of this on the intelligibility of speech in quiet and in noise (12-talker babble, levels of 65 and 75 dB SPL) were measured. The results indicated that speech reception thresholds (SRTs) in quiet were significantly adversely affected by decreases in low-level gain. However, SRTs in noise were relatively unaffected by changes in low-level gain. An exception occurred at the higher noise level used, where increases in the low-level gains (with corresponding increases in compression ratios) had a significant adverse effect on the SRTs. It is concluded that, provided excessive low-level gains (associated with high compression ratios) are avoided, the main criteria for fitting such a system should be listening comfort (i.e. achieving an acceptable tonal balance, and avoiding uncomfortably loud sounds) and an appropriate value of the threshold for detecting speech in quiet (which should be a little below 50 dB SPL).

An intelligent sales forecasting system through integration of artificial neural networks and fuzzy neural networks with fuzzy weight elimination.

Sales forecasting plays a very prominent role in business strategy. Numerous investigations addressing this problem have generally employed statistical methods, such as regression or autoregressive and moving average (ARMA). However, sales forecasting is very complicated owing to influence by internal and external environments. Recently, artificial neural networks (ANNs) have also been applied in sales forecasting since their promising performances in the areas of control and pattern recognition. However, further improvement is still necessary since unique circumstances, e.g. promotion, cause a sudden change in the sales pattern. Thus, this study utilizes a proposed fuzzy neural network (FNN), which is able to eliminate the unimportant weights, for the sake of learning fuzzy IF-THEN rules obtained from the marketing experts with respect to promotion. The result from FNN is further integrated with the time series data through an ANN. Both the simulated and real-world problem results show that FNN with weight elimination can have lower training error compared with the regular FNN. Besides, real-world problem results also indicate that the proposed estimation system outperforms the conventional statistical method and single ANN in accuracy.

[The application and development of artificial intelligence in medical diagnosis systems].

This paper has reviewed the development of artificial intelligence in medical practice and medical diagnostic expert systems, and has summarized the application of artificial neural network. It explains that a source of difficulty in medical diagnostic system is the co-existence of multiple diseases--the potentially inter-related diseases. However, the difficulty of image expert systems is inherent in high-level vision. And it increases the complexity of expert system in medical image. At last, the prospect for the development of artificial intelligence in medical image expert systems is made.

An intelligent ventilation and oxygenation management system in neonatal intensive care using fuzzy trend template fitting.

This paper describes an open loop feedback intelligent system for neonatal intensive care management. The system provides a tool enabling the user to make the final decision to accept or reject the advice given. The system collects 18 parameters from the bedside monitor and ventilator using a Medical Information Bus (MIB) system. Comparison between the system's recommendations and seven clinical users (three doctors and four nurses) actions was made during monitoring of seven neonates with gestation age of 27-31 weeks for 124.13 h (mu=17.7329, sigma=5.3843 h, range=10.40-23.85 h). The validation process compared the recommendations triggered by the system with the user feedback (agree, disagree, wait). The system made 191 recommendations in total, 33 of which (17%) were for ventilation and 158 (83%) for oxygenation. The clinician agreed with the system ventilation decisions in 30 occasions (91%) and in 148 occasions for the system oxygenation decisions (94%). The overall percentage of the agreement between the system and the clinician was 93%.

Artificial Intelligence in Predicting Systemic Complications From Retinal Findings: A New Frontier in Precision Medicine.

Innovations in retinal imaging technologies and growing evidence from retinal imaging of systemic and neurodegenerative diseases have begun to explore the utility of retinal imaging in diagnosing these conditions. Since the retina shares embryological origins with the central nervous system and reflects systemic microvascular characteristics, it is well positioned for noninvasive observation of patients' systemic and neural health. Moreover, accessibility of retinal imaging has improved with the increasing number of ophthalmology clinics. Rapid improvements in various deep learning (DL) tools have also catalyzed the automation of retinal imaging analysis. Systems that utilize DL for retinal imaging are being developed to assist with disease recognition, clinical judgment, and prognostic assessment of systemic health. Various imaging modalities are being integrated with existing genomic and clinical data to estimate an individual's predisposition to certain conditions. Contrary to many existing reviews, the objective of this review is to synthesize the most recent clinical and technological evidence on DL-based diagnostic systems for retinal imaging, with a focus on how different network architectures and their combinations have been developed, validated, and applied across systemic disease detection and prediction. Specifically, this review examines the datasets, model validation approaches, and automated diagnostic systems reported in recent literature. It discusses the extent to which these advancements address existing barriers toward real-time diagnostic application across clinical disciplines. Integrating retinal imaging with DL is an innovative and promising approach to precision medicine and health risk reduction.

A virtual reality interface to an intelligent dental care system.

The design and fabrication of teeth restorations in dentistry rely increasingly on CAD/CAM techniques. We present an approach for interactive design of the occlusal surface of teeth based on simulation of jaw articulation and computer-aided diagnosis of occlusal disorders. To bridge the cognitive gap between the dentist and the computer system, we propose a virtual reality user interface, which applies the metaphors of tools and techniques known in dentistry. This makes the restoration design more intuitive for dentists. The system uses Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) and HTML standards to generate a treatment report and exchange data in an electronic form. The simulation of jaw articulation requires fast calculation of multi-point contacts and detection of collisions between surfaces of teeth and restorations. We have developed a distance maps technique which exhibits realtime performance for objects with complex geometry and is suitable for other virtual reality systems dealing with complex contacts. The characteristics of contacts between teeth acquired during lower jaw motion are compactly represented as accumulated distance maps. These maps are then used for automatic removal of interferences between the restorations and the opponent teeth, and provide the dentist with information for further manual adjustments of the occlusal surfaces.
