Wayne State University Library's serials automation project is evolutionary in concept, with its first completed stage designed to give information on titles and holdings. Its master tape includes, in addition to Wayne State University holdings, data for more than twenty biomedical libraries in the area, and print options are available that will produce a full union list or individual lists singly or in any combination.

Since 1986, we have been developing a regional health and welfare system using optical memory cards. We have expanded the system and performed model experiments and evaluations this time. There are approximately 3000 card-holders and 23 card-reader terminals in use. They cover 50 percent of the medical facilities in the city of Isehara. Two medical clinics within neighboring cities have joined our project. Standard Deviation Index (SDI) has been introduced to standardize the numeric results of examinations. The terminals are connected with Integrated Services for Digital Network (ISDN) allowing remote access to the optical memory cards. This enhanced connectivity has allowed greater cooperation in delivering quality medical services.

Information networks offer enormous potential for improving the delivery of health care services, facilitating health-related decision-making, and contributing to better health. In addition, advanced information technologies offer important opportunities for new markets, targeted information products and services, greater accessibility, lower costs and prices, and more rapid and efficient distribution. Realizing the full potential of those information resources requires the resolution of significant intellectual property issues, some of which may be affected by special features of health information. For example, the government is a significant funder and originator of health-related information. In addition, much of that information is of great importance to the population and benefits not only individual users, but also employers, insurance companies, the government, and society as a whole. The government must therefore continue to provide particularly important health information to the public, and facilitate that information's accessibility and reliability, while avoiding unnecessary competition with private information providers. Congress and courts must modify or interpret current copyright law as necessary to guarantee that it does not interfere with innovation in tailored health information or exceed its constitutional boundaries and restrict access to information, as opposed to expression. Both producers and users of information must work with the government to educate the public about the availability of health information and the rights of and limitations upon users under copyright law.
Information processing and coding were analysed in dissociated hippocampal cultures, grown on multielectrode arrays. Multisite stimulation was used to activate different neurons and pathways of the network. The neural activity was binned into firing rates and the variability of the firing of individual neurons and of the whole population was analysed. In individual neurons, the timing of the first action potential (AP) was rather precise from trial to trial, whereas the timing of later APs was much more variable. Pooling APs in an ensemble of neurons reduced the variability of the response and allowed stimuli varying in intensity to be distinguished reliably in a single trial. A similar decrease of variability was observed pooling the first evoked APs in an ensemble of neurons. The size of the neuronal pool (approximately 50-100 neurons) and the time bin (approximately 20 ms) necessary to provide reproducible responses are remarkably similar to those obtained in in vivo preparations and in small nervous systems. Blockage of excitatory synaptic pathways mediated by NMDA receptors improved the mutual information between the evoked response and stimulus properties. When inhibitory GABAergic pathways were blocked by bicuculline the opposite effect was obtained. These results show how ensemble averages and an appropriate balance between inhibition and excitation allow neuronal networks to process information in a fast and reliable way.
The major challenge in biology today is biocomplexity: the need to explain how cell and tissue behaviors emerge from collective interactions within complex molecular networks. Part I of this two-part article, described a mechanical model of cell structure based on tensegrity architecture that explains how the mechanical behavior of the cell emerges from physical interactions among the different molecular filament systems that form the cytoskeleton. Recent work shows that the cytoskeleton also orients much of the cell's metabolic and signal transduction machinery and that mechanical distortion of cells and the cytoskeleton through cell surface integrin receptors can profoundly affect cell behavior. In particular, gradual variations in this single physical control parameter (cell shape distortion) can switch cells between distinct gene programs (e.g. growth, differentiation and apoptosis), and this process can be viewed as a biological phase transition. Part II of this article covers how combined use of tensegrity and solid-state mechanochemistry by cells may mediate mechanotransduction and facilitate integration of chemical and physical signals that are responsible for control of cell behavior. In addition, it examines how cell structural networks affect gene and protein signaling networks to produce characteristic phenotypes and cell fate transitions during tissue development.
Information theory suggests that extraction of the principal sub-space from data is useful when the input to a neural network is corrupted with additive noise. A number of neural network algorithms exist which can find this principal sub-space, many of which also extract the principal components of the input. However, when there is noise on both input and output of a network, simply extracting the principal sub-space (or components) is not sufficient to optimize information capacity. An approximate solution to maximizing information capacity would be to extract the principal sub-space of components with variances above a certain threshold, and then ensure that these are uncorrelated and that they have equal variance at the output. A neural network is described which uses negative feedback connections to achieve this uncorrelated, equal-variance solution.
This paper considers the health implications of access to social capital (SC) using data from a survey of households in two suburbs in Adelaide, Australia. SC was conceptualised as comprising 'infrastructure'--the networks and values that facilitate access to resources; and 'resources'--the resources available through this infrastructure. Questionnaires were delivered to all households in the area, asking the adult with the next birthday to complete it. In all, 530 (50%) were returned. A partial least-squares path analysis was undertaken using demographic, SC and health latent variables, and a measure of perceived relative advantage. Three infrastructure (values, formal networks and informal networks) and four resource (help, acceptance by neighbours, civic activities and feelings of control) variables were considered. Mental and physical health were measured using the SF-12. The values variable was associated with all the resource variables, the informal networks variable was related to help, and the formal networks variable was associated with civic actions. There were significant sociodemographic differences in a number of the infrastructure and resource variables, as well as mental and physical health. Those who were better off materially also had greater access to elements of SC, and reported better health. Values, informal networks, help, and control were all directly or indirectly positively associated with better mental health. No SC variables were associated with physical health. Perceived relative advantage was positively associated with a number of SC variables and also mental and physical health. The implications for health promotion are discussed.
