Owners have often been found to have an advantage in animal contests. One explanation of this is that the resource under dispute is of greater value to the owner than to the intruder (nonowner). Such 'resource value asymmetries' may be caused by intrinsic factors, such as the physiological state of the contestants. Females of the bethylid wasp Goniozus nephantidis fight for possession of paralysed hosts. A recent study found that larger females tend to win but owner status also confers an advantage. We tested the hypothesis that ownership advantage is linked to differences in egg load (the number of unlaid ripe eggs) between contestant females. Egg loads were highly variable and positively influenced by age, nutrition, body size and host ownership. Owners almost always won owner-intruder contests. The outcomes of owner-owner contests (in which size and status asymmetries were absent) were strongly influenced by differences in egg load. Children with infantile autism and childhood psychoses were identified in the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke Collaborative Perinatal Study. They were matched with two control groups one of normal-IQ and the other of low-IQ children. Perinatal data, which had been collected prospectively, were then rated blindly. The relationship between uterine bleeding in mothers and their subsequently delivered children, who developed the syndromes of autism and childhood psychosis, was found to be significant. Mid-trimester bleeding was especially prevalent. The bleeding was usually minor and was not considered to be clinically significant at the time of occurrence. The results tend to corroborate 12 previously published retrospective reports indicating more perinatal complications in children who develop autism and childhood psychosis.

We report a patient with massive pulmonary embolism and circulatory shock during pregnancy (31st gestational week) and preterm labour who has been successfully treated with recombinant tissue type plasminogen activator. Thrombolysis was performed using 10 mg.h-1 over 4 h followed by 2 mg.h-1 for 1 h 30 min resulting in complete resolution of cardio-respiratory symptoms. Except for slight bleeding from one puncture site no complications occurred. At 48 h after the end of thrombolytic therapy the patient was delivered spontaneously of a male preterm healthy infant. The relevance of this new thrombolytic agent in the treatment of massive life-threatening pulmonary embolism during pregnancy is discussed.
