[Microsporum canis as the origin of an enzootic outbreak in swine. A case report].

We report on the outbreak of dermatomycosis caused by Microsporum canis at a bavarian pig breeding and fattening farm. Clinical signs were shown mainly by younger pigs. Microsporum canis could be identified in skin scrapings of pigs, cats, and the farmer's daughter by culture and fluorescence microscopy. Questions of epizootiology, diagnostics and therapy are discussed.

Molecular taxonomy and GC/MS of metabolites of Scytalidium hyalinum and Nattrassia mangiferae (Hendersonula toruloidea).

ARDRA of ribosomal genes confirmed that the hyphomycete Scytalidium hyalinum is identical to the coelomycete Nattrassia mangiferae (Hendersonula toruloidea, with arthroconidial synanamorph Scytalidium dimidiatum). S. hyalinum may be just a melanin-less cultural mutant of S. dimidiatum. This explains why the two species are regularly found in the same patient population as agents of human dermatomycosis. Two strains from plant sources were found to be identical to the human strains in ITS-RFLP patterns. RFLP of SSU and LSU was hampered by the frequent occurrence of introns. Profiles of secondary metabolites were studied using TLC, GC and GC/MS. Production of metabolites varies considerably with the strain, but two naphthoquinone compounds were nearly always present. Selected-ion monitoring (SIM) of these compounds enabled the specific recognition of the taxon.

How useful is a biopsy in a case of suspected fungal infection?

In suspected cases of superficial fungal infections, biopsies are not routinely performed. This paper has analyzed some diagnostic features of histopathologic examination in dermatomycosis that are not usually emphasized. The usefulness of light microscopic observation of PAS-stained and plastic-embedded specimens has also been shown.

[The pig as dead-end host of Trichophyton verrucosum? A case report].

A dermatomycosis of swine caused by Trichophyton verrucosum is reported. Trichophyton verrucosum could be identified in skin scrapings of pigs and contacting calves by fluorescence microscopy and culture. The mode of transmission and the rare isolation of Trichophyton verrucosum from pigs are discussed.

[Tinea follicularis presenting as trichophytic Majocchi granuloma].

We report on a 75 year old patient with a bronchial asthma treated at least for 15 years with low dose prednisolone. Under this treatment he developed a tinea follicularis and was demonstrated in our clinic with papulopustular skin lesions on both forearms, left malleolus and left thigh. We saw tender to touch granulomata on erythematosquamous atrophic skin. A dermatomycosis was diagnosed by isolation and identification of Trichophyton rubrum. In addition the onychomycosis of all finger- and footnails was caused by T. rubrum. Clinical and accessory clinical findings (histology) agreed with a 1883 described disease, granuloma trichophyticum Majocchi. An internal treatment with terbinafine 250 mg/d and topical with tioconazole cream completely cured the skin lesions and the nails.
