This study compared the MMPI scores of Central American refugees from Guatemala and El Salvador to those of Mexican immigrants. It was expected that subjects from Guatemala and El Salvador would obtain higher scores on the F, D, Pa, and Sc scales because these subjects came from "war-torn" countries. A multivariate analysis of variance yielded no significant differences between the three groups on any of the validity and clinical scales including F, D, Pa, and Sc. Recommendations for cross-national research are noted especially in light of the new version, or MMPI-2.
Correlations between scores on the Barron Ego Strength Scale and a checklist of 18 Symptoms of stress reactions were calculated for two responses from 503 undergraduate Kuwaiti students (225 men and 278 women). Using total scores on both measures for all students the correlation was -.42, so students with higher ego strength scores tend to have fewer stressful symptoms. rs by symptoms ranged from -.33 to -.11.
Changes in self-reported soldier marital satisfaction and marital quality were assessed at three points in time, 1994-1997, before, during, and after a 1995 peacekeeping deployment of approximately 100 married soldiers to the Sinai peninsula. Analysis shows a moderate decline in marital satisfaction during the deployment (effect size of 0.27-0.29) but no overall change in the long term. Marital quality did not change significantly over time. Marital stability rates were especially low for soldiers who reported that their marriage was in trouble prior to the deployment. It appears that stable marriages can survive 6-mo. deployments without long-term decrements in satisfaction or quality. How many couples will continue to accept voluntarily a military lifestyle that requires frequent sacrifices of marital satisfaction as may occur during separations and deployments remains an open question, even though intentions for retention did not appear correlated with marital satisfaction or changes in marital satisfaction over the deployment in this study.

An institutional development team of four technical advisers has been working at Mulago Hospital, the 1440-bed National Teaching and Referral Hospital, since 1983 to assist the hospital to re-establish working management systems, drug and supplies procurement arrangements and an engineering maintenance service. The hospital was in poor shape at the beginning of the project, but has improved over time. The Team works with counterparts to advise, coach, train, facilitate and support their development. External factors have contributed to the progress made, but the Team's contribution included long term availability in the hospital, the sustainable nature of the counterpart relationship, practical and material assistance, and access to outside charitable funds.

The security department of any healthcare facility faces delicate security problems. In addition to guarding staff and the facility, security professionals must protect the patients.
